I have to disagree on Central being the easiest place to come in and coach. The standard is set so high for the last 40 some years, you have a lot of pressure on your back taking over the helm in Pella, especially as an alumni. I think McMartin is definitely deserving of COY, 10-0 in the league now isnt what it used to be for one. Brautigam has done a heck of a job but I still think Mac trumps that. (plus I didnt care for him at all when he recruited me) I mean it was only 2 years ago Central's dynasty was written off by most all on here outside of Pella. The talk was always..Centrals run is done, its time for someone new and so on. 2 straight Conference Championships and hopefully a deep run in the playoffs....it feels good to be back ;D

There isnt a stat for "not getting the job done in regulation" a W is the same...so not to stir up too much but couldnt the opposite be said for Koehler...2 OT losses? I think Mac deserves the credit he has gotten.

Congrats to the whole IIAC on a great year!!!

dsquared,

Didn't you just shoot yourself in the foot.  Your statement about when does the talent level outweigh the coach's need to coach.  From what everyone has agreed to is that the pure athletes are at UD now.  Or at least that has been portrayed by a lot of the posters here.  If that were true then the UD coach would never be COY.  With Belleus on the team the pure athlete he is why does he need coached? this is from your logic not mine.  Therefore I think that you proved the coaches choice correctly in that they picked MCMartin as he didn't have the tools that the UD coach had right?

I think 3 OT wins by Central indicates that this league is becoming very balanced at the top. Now, do I think Central should have locked up the Coe game in regualtion. Absolutely, but you have to remember Coe has some great playmakers that didn't give up.

Dsqaured, UD may have had a turnaround in the past 2 years but Central has had 1 conference loss in the past two years. They don't give out COY of the year for turning around the internal workings of a team. Ultimately it comes down to what you do on the field. Once UD starts competing for the Conference Crown on a consist basis, then you might have a little more merit, and get a little more sympathy.

Dsquared, are you the one that said -- just last week -- that you didn't think that UD's sucess this year could be considered "progress"? One decent season with a history of 20 lackluster seasons doesn't count as progress -- I find it hilarious that you are all of a sudden jumping on the UD bandwagon when you were singing an entirely different tune just because McMartin's squad got more recognition..... care to elaborate? (If you'd like, I can go back and pull the quotes....if it will help your argument, that is....)

I repeat... WHAT PROGRESS?!?!?!???  So they'll jump from last place to #7 this year.  Minus a key D-1 transfer, their football team is 2-5 right now... MAYBE 3-4 (which is a huge improvement... but really... not enough to brag about).  You've got to earn respect in this conference... so the football team strung together (to this point) 4 conference wins.  Central hung 40 on them and Coe hung 37 on them in Dubuque.  If everyone else views "up-and-coming" programs as bottom dwellers, you have my permission to say I don't have vision and you can call me whatever the heck you want to call me.

Dsquared, I thought I would grab those quotes anyway -- COY doesn't generally go to a...what did you call it...."bottom dweller" team.... ;)

Belleus was/is and incredible athlete...but to say Brautigame deserves Coach of the Year is a little out there. Coaches generally are associated with teams. And if he could ever figure how to get that group of individuals with incredible athletic talent in Dubuque to play together as well as..Central...among most other IIAC teams... then he is COY cuz they would be 10-0.

Airborne, DF!

Welcome first of all.  It does seem that dsquared is trying to have it both ways.  I don't follow him other than he flip flops more than John Kerry.  First UD was a bottom feeder then the coach is COY.

What shall we call him?

DF1,

I propose that we do the west bracket and we can go on a weekly basis.  I will continue to keep track of the picks.  Good Luck to the post season picks.

After looking at the D3 team of the week, I would like to say that my connections run deep. I played ball with Huisman and Doud and went to H.S. with Jay Tully from Whitworth. I would like to say that I taught the DB's everything they knew, but that would be a blatant and outrageous lie that would cause me to be locked up in prison in most countries.

[ You have to know that Central likes to do its talking on the field...especially when you support a program that takes pride in doing the same.

Yes, but has beens can't do their talking on the field.  That's what "Post Patterns" are for!

I couldn't agree more Duffman!

I wonder if they get those cool fleece pullovers for making ESPN the magazine's team?

As long as they subscribe to the magazine, they will. Plus they will get 75% off the newstand price.

I think a Spartan win over a certain Knight squad might have been perspective changing for some posters on this board.

Dubuque will be an interesting program to follow in the next couple of years.  Can they sustain the success that they had this year?  How will the new facilities change the makeup of the roster and school?  Can they recruit better in Eastern Iowa?

Good luck this weekend against the Johnnies!

2-time POY and COY?  That's an interesting point.  When is that last time a COY or a POY has repeated in the IIAC, let alone both of them 2 years running?

From the IIAC Release...

"Schuring is just the third player to earn back-to-back Iowa Conference football MVP honors, joining Simpson's Brad Jorgensen (1996-97) and Coe's Fredrick Jackson (2001-02)...This marks the ninth time a coach has won IIAC Coach of the Year honors in back-to-back years, the first time since Simpson's Jim Williams in 1996-97."

So to answer your question, Simpson's Jorgenson and Williams are the only other duo to pull the double double-dip.  Assuming the Simpson SID hadn't emailed you that info already. ;)

Blah, blah, blah.  POY this, COY that.

Don't let all this distract you from the machine that will be rolling into Pella for Saturday!  Coach Gagliardi will be oiling all squeaky parts (and as shown  last weekend, there are a lot of squeaky parts ;)).

Kofoed throws 3 TDs.  Lofboom runs in another.  Johnnies by 19.
