Sportsknight----I assume you went to WD? You may know some of my relatives--huge wrestling family from WD (Gottos). Actually, I have many relatives that attend or have attended WD.

You assume wrong.  I went to Cascade, graduated in '01.  LCU moved up to 3A before my senior year, but we played them the three years before that.  I did know a couple of the Gotto's from WD in school though.  And you're right about that being a big wrestling family in the area.  Hell, there were Gotto's wrestling at WD when my old man was in school at Cascade Aquin back in the late 70s.

I went to WD; you're right, huge wrestling school. The family tradition is amazing -- there are many two (and now sometimes three) generations of wrestlers that come out of Manchester. I graduated in '96 with Casey Doyle and Mitch Parker....guys that the Wartburg faithful should be familiar with.

HA, that is what happens when you abbreviate. I meant western dubuque---forgot it was the same abbreviation as west delaware. I figured sportsknight was from western dubuque with the hatred of beckman...didn't realize it traveled to cascade as well. The Gotto family I am speaking of has 15 kids of which many of them have large families and I believe they are on the 3rd generation of wrestlers with some of the 15 kids being up there in age now. There were approx (maybe off 1  ;D ) 11 boys and all but 1 wrestled and every one of them qualified for the state tournament I believe.

Show- Penner played for 3 years at UD. He decided to give up his last year of playing to jump start his coaching career and got the job at beckman. He was a VERY goal oriented and motivated person. In football, he was by no means the best athlete on the field but no one played with more heart and was certainly very teachable for coaches. He'll do well at East and what a great challenge. The sky is the limit. If he does do well, I bet he could eventually pick any job in Iowa if he wanted to.

Hilarious -- we have a branch of the same family tree in Manchester... I know several Gotto's.  :)

Penner played LB at UD. One of the hardest working people I know.

Sportsknight--do you know what you are talking about? You didn't play Union in '98-'99 for sure, at least not in Districts. In '97 they were 8-1, and in '96 you guys did barely get by them, and Cascade had a good team in '96.

1.  I guess I should have clarified, but when I said "we" I meant the team I was on, which in 97 and 98 would have been the JV.  Cascade's varsity hasn't been very good lately, with '96 and '01 as the exceptions.

2.  You might have me on the '98-99 seasons.  I sure thought we played them those years, but I was out 3 games in '98 and most of the '99 season with knee injuries.  Those two years kind of run together for me.

And as far as the WD vs. WD confusion, I guess the kids nowadays refer to themselves as "WestDel" or "WestDub" to avoid such things.

Me too, I just got back from the ISU coaches clinic and was jacked to watch 2 practices in March.
I don't remember Union being very good in 98 or 99. The last year I played was 98 at A-P and they would have for sure lost to us, D-NH and Osage, and probably Denver.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Union went from 8-1 in '97, to 1-8 in '98. '98 they were just bad.

Yeah, but if they put it out there, how long does it take to get covered in goose crap?

In all seriousness, I think some of the students might not look to favorably on the college jacking tuition above the $30k mark for the first time one week, then turning around and finding a couple mil laying around to give WL&P for a wind turbine.

$2 million over 20 years...sounds like this falls right in line with all the rest of Wartburg's debt.

Central has been working on going "green" for years. We've received several accolades, including LEED ratings for several of our buildings: the business center, the Vermeer Science Center, and new residence halls. http://www.central.edu/facilities/environment2.html#projects

Personally, I think that responsible environmental stewardship should be applauded. I think everyone should be doing more to help the environment that we all share. Way to go, Wartburg -- when is everyone else going to follow suit?

Walston, you stole my headline!  :D

Maybe he actually took a little time to look into the East job before signing the contract and move into his office?

Some random thoughts. I am happy to see that UWP will be playing BV starting in 2008 for 4 years. it will be great for regional FB. A win in the West always helps a teams playoff standing. I too do not understand no spring FB practice in the IIAC? The team is conditioning inside, just move it outside. Thank You and God Bless!

I want to clear the air about Penner.

Being his best friend, I was one of the first to know the East story. You got to love when the assistant principal/AD at East offers him the position with the approval of the other 10 or so on the interview committee. Well, long story short, the princiapl (female whom is leaving at the end of the school year) decides to revoke his offer and give the promised PE position to someone within the district. She actually had the nerve to call Penner and still ask him if he were interested in the football position. THAT is when he withdrew his name for consideration. I guess East just doesn't have any desire to be successful.

I have a couple friends who's wives are teachers in the Waterloo school district.  The Penner story sounds about typical for the district.
