No, but Williams did win a few championships and had a very nice run in the playoffs and was gone. Niemann hasn't had nearly the success and has been on a downward slide since he took over.
Simpson's last 3 years have been 5-5, 5-5, and 3-7.

Yeah, you are right.  I'm just not used to the idea of a Div. III coach getting let go because of a run of results a little below expectations.  Of course I come from a school that hasn't exactly produced much in the way of results in quite awhile...for ANY sport.  Of course back in the day Davison with the mens bball program had a run of 6 or 8 years finishing either 1st or 2nd in the league each year and I would bet he could have put together a string or 6 or 8 years of finishing 8th or worse and Dubuque wouldn't have let him go.  Of course he was an alumnus of Dubuque and had coached there over 20 years at that point so that might be a little different than the Simpson situation with Nieman

I don't know if they necesarily "get run" I'd call it more of a McCarney-type resignation.  ;D

I think he needs results fast. There has been talent there, but Simpson hasn't been able to convert it to wins.

Storm-what?

I have heard all of the same rumors you all have heard and as far as I know they are still rumors. I'd say the wins better be there (not likely in my opinion) this year or else there will be a changing of the guard. If that happens, and it's too bad because Niemann is a decent guy, but if that happens, I think it would be best to start with all fresh coaches and go from there- at least as much as possible. It's hard to change attitudes and environments with one coaching change.

Question for the former IIAC players that are now coaching out there on this board.

If you played at school X in the IIAC and were offered a coaching position at school Y in the IIAC, would you take the job or would you feel too many loyalties to your old school to take the position?

dutchfan1

I know someone who graduated from Wartburg, and coached for Coe -- he didn't seem to have a conflict at all....

I would suppose that if you were looking to get ahead in coaching that you would have to start somewhere, and if a rival school is considered a professional step-up,you'd have to take the position.

I don't think its a problem at all.
The only place I'd have a problem coaching at would be Luther. I love Wartburg, but if I had the opportunity to coach full-time (and get paid pretty well) at another IIAC school I don't think I would have a tough time turning it down.
Schmitty coached at Coe.
Dips coached at BV
There's probably others as well.
At one point, Wartburg's AD, Heach Coach, OC and DC were all Cornell Alums. I'm glad we ended that. Now just the AD.
footballdaddy, what is your team affiliation.

I had some WH-type time to do some research and came up with this list of Wartburg Coaches with other IIAC school ties.

Jim Conlon- Soccer head coach – Loras
Jim Willis - head tennis – Coe
Jennifer Walker  head volleyball- Central
Casey Chaplin, baseball Hitting/catching coach - BV

And previous noted Rick Willis -AD Cornell

I know there are a lot of Wartburg grads coaching @ Luther. Most of men's basketball are Wart grads. I guess to be the best you need to learn from the best.

Something like 4 of the 5 Luther MBB staff are W'burg grads I heard.
So is their softball coach and she had a pretty good year.
Think McCarney or Gable, or McDermott.
Mr Cyclone himself, Pete Taylor was an Iowa grad,
Its amazing how you can shift loyalties to whoever signs your paycheck.

Would there be any difference in your thinking if the coaching staff you played under was all still there???

footballdaddy

I would hope that any coach would like to see any of their players succeed,no matter where.Obviously, they would like to keep them in their own system. But also you can see dozens of examples in D1 and the NFL of coaches coaching against former coaches.

BTW W-H, I'm Orange too.

I know it's wrong sport(s) but there is a Legends of Knights gym poll @ http://www.go-knights.net/legends/

Like they say in Chicago: VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN.

There is at least 1 spouse of a poster to vote for.  ;D
