There is NO rule right now in the IIAC. Coe is either thinking about proposing one or already has. There's no way they could apply it to something that has already happened but maybe can make it stick down the road.

Ok thanks Walston,  So Suchow will play he won't be asked to sit out a year?

The NCAA is the governing organization with a higher level of jurisdiction. This is a quote from the NCAA transfer guide.

"You don't need a letter if ... In Divisions I and II, if you're transferring from a school that is not a member of the NCAA or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), you don't need a permission-to-contact letter.
Also, if you are now in Division III, you may issue your own release (called a self-release) to allow another Division III school to contact you about transferring.

The self-release applies only to transfers from a Division III school to another Division III school. For a sample self-release, go to our Web site at
www.ncaa.org"

Oh they are very much planning on Neil being a substantial part of the offense. You don't have a 3-time All-conference pick transfer in and not use him.
From what I know, Neil issued his self-release around the beginning of July and contacted Wartburg. Wartburg is bound by that release to not reveal anything to Coe that Suckow is interested in a different school because if something goes wrong in the transfer process, the player would undoubtedly catch some flak at their school when word got out he was interested in transferring.

Throwing in my 2 cents on the sit out rule.....I really hope that this sit out rule doesnt come about in D3.  I think it would really hurt D3 athletics.  I think that if a kid is paying $30,000 a year he should be able to do what he pleases.

A side not, I love seeing evil empire being referenced with Wartburg.....

I know the WIAC has an intra-conference transfer rule that requires the player to sit out one season before being eligible.

Yeah, but they also allowed non-medical redshirts up until the NCAA did away with them at the D3 level.  The WIAC has always been weird like that (including the rampant steroid use at UWL in the early 80s).

Ok here is my $05.98(nickel ninety-eight....that's nearly 6 cents).  There may be many reasons for Suckow's  transfer.  It seems to me that some sort of deadline or waiting period might reduce last minute 'jumps' to and from inter-conference teams.  I doubt anyone on this board would be either cheering or agnozing if Suckow went to the Johnnies or Augustana.  With that being said, the difference between DI and DIII athletics seems to be the balance that DIII athletes have between paying(and getting) an education and playing a sport that they love.  Could anyone deny a player the chance to play more or choose a system that better fits him/her.  It has happened at the DI level, examples escape me, and the player went on to be very successful.  I know of several examples from my son's HS class of either quitting football entirely(didnt get much PT)  or transferring to another school.  Transferring is never easy on anyone, school or individual.  However, I would be in favor of some sort of waiting period, say 90 days. which would at least allow the individual to either transfer say spring sememster (after FB season) or maybe a 60 day waiting period which would allow transfer after end of spring season.  Transfers after 2 days of opening training camp seems silly except in the case of a freshman.  The real problem comes when you have a good player going to another team within a conference last minute.  I still believe, since most of these guys will not get a chance to play after college, that an athlete should have the right to maximize his PT and athletic experience so long as he/she does it responsibly.  Suchow seems to have been cutting it a little close and therefore become posting fodder.  He may have a very good reason (and PT is good enough for me) that we will never fully know.  It seems a rule of some kind is in order but one that would mostly eliminate last minute jumps, especially to inter-conference teams.

Is a Hoover a dirt sucker?  Just asking.

As I've stated before,I belive a player at the D3 level should be able to play where he wants. It all sounds like no rules were broken, even though the timing wasn't the best. The gain or loss of one player shouldn't make or break someone's season.I'm sure there are some hard feelings, but I'm also sure things will even out sometime in the future.

I still don't really like the idea of making kids sit out at the D3 level.  There are so many factors besides athletics that can come into play that it doesn't make sense.  If a kid that was in the Wartburg Choir wanted to transfer to BV, would you make them miss x number of performances in BV's music department?  While I was at Wartburg we had a girl transfer in over Christmas break from Central because she thought Wartburg's communications program was better.  If she played softball or golf, would it be fair to make her miss part of the season for making a purely academic decision?  I don't think so.
That said, I think the best way to avoid these situations in the future would be to have a transfer deadline for athletes.  Something along the lines of 30 days prior to the beginning of practice.  That way you could avoid kids that didn't think they'd get any PT at one school switching in the middle of camp.  I don't think that happens much as is, just because it'd be tough to pull off with admissions requirements, housing placement, etc.

I agree with that idea.A month sounds like a reasonable time to use as a deadline.I wonder what part of July suckow decided to self-release.If it was more than a month before camp starts,is there anything to be concerned about?

Well to take that a little farther.  What about at semester?  He or she has to declare at the end of the semester whether spring or fall if they are transferring to another IIAC school.  If Suchow would have said say June 1 I am leaving Coe then would there be all this uproar.  Or if he would have done it say Jan 1.  I understand that some of the posters here don't like the students giving up a season.  I think that we are missing one thing here that D3 is supposed to be for academics correct.  So if a rule was made to about losing a season for transferring how does that affect his studies?  I would make the case that it doesn't do a thing.  The sports are an extra.  Even if we are talking about all conference players in any sport.  If Wartburg had lost Hammes to Coe, or Central lost Schuring to Simpson, ...........the list can go on but if a school lost a key player they would all be singing another song.  The rule may get some legs and I for one think that it will force kids to take a long hard look at the school he chooses if the sports are that important to him.  Even at the D1 level they say that a student commits to the school not the coach.  Isn't that why most of the posters when a person comes on here for advice to choose a school is pick the school that will get your son or daughter the degree they want.  To me the deadline suggestion is a good one, if they don't make the deadline then they forfiet a season.

Quick Question to change the tide of the conversation a little. I doubt anything that gets said on this board will influence any Iowa Conference rules, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to debate it.
To be honest with you, Until this (late summer transfers) becomes more common, I don't see any rules being changed ever.
Anyway, my question is-With the start of the HS football season today (practice anyway) What HS does everyone pull for. Myself, obviously coaching at Dowling puts my loyalties there, and being an alumnus of Aplington-Parkersburg, I gotta pull for my Falcons. Also like to see Valley of Elgin do well and Dike-New Hartford do poorly.
