I think that if a kid is paying $30,000 a year he should be able to do what he pleases.

I think this is the prevailing opinion in Division III as well.

I root for Pleasantville, my hometown team.  After that Underwood and Dowling Walston, ask Coach Wilson about his moment of glory in upsetting P'ville in 1984.  Seriously, Tom Wilson is a first class coach and man and a damn good recruiter as well!

I pull for 2 teams:

1) The Roland-Story Norsemen

2) Whoever is playing Gilbert

BTW Walson, were you on the A-P team that came down and killed R-S in the playoffs a few years ago?
I was not but my brother was the kicker on that team.  Might have played a little reciever too.

Well if he was the place kicker he couldn't have played receiver because his kicking leg was tired after all the extra points!

Eldora-New Providence where my kids graduated from, Chariton where I graduated from and Wayne of Corydon where Mrs DF graduated from.  Really don't cheer against anyone.

My main loyalty in HS football is to my alma mater, Cascade High School.  But I also root for schools where I have friends that are coaches (Cedar Falls, Dowling, Hampton-Dumont, Muscatine, etc).  And whoever Beckman plays.

would there be such a uproar if it wasn't Suckrow that was transferring from Coe to Wartburg. There is a reason why he transfer and we may never know why! But I don't think a kid in D3 that transfers should have to set out any length of time.ss

My HS loyalty would be Union of La Porte City.  Though we hadn't merged with Dysart to make it Union while I was there.  I am looking forward to see how BV's old coach Joe Hadacheck does in his return to coaching.

Been following this Neil Suckow transfer issue with mixed feelings.  Some "yellow lights" start flashing.  Let's play the "what" game:
* "What If" underclassmen 2nd or 3rd team players each year combed the rosters of other teams and then decided to transfer to a school where they could become an immediate starter.  What a recruiting nightmare this would be for coaches --- and potential disappointment for new freshmen coming in.
* "What About" players who have paid their dues working 2 or 3 years at one school, working to become a starter - then a transfer comes in - disrupting natural maturity and attrition for the football team.  Could this be dangerous for team chemistry?
* I would be curious - does anyone have any direct comments from either of the Head Football Coaches of the two schools involved with this transfer?

I can fully appreciate allowing a student to transfer - $30,000 a year for education is a lot.  Final question:  Would a team that wins a conference championship due to an influx of a transfer or transfers have an asterisk beside their name?

If a transfer comes in well that is just part of college football.  A player could also put in their time and a more talented freshman might arrive on campus as well.  It is the comptetive nature of the game.  If you want the spot you have to work for it.  Just because you put time in doesn't mean anything is yours.

As far as team chemistry, that is up the maturity of the players.  Are they going to give the new athlete a chance or are they going to hold a grudge.

I really don't expect there to be that many intra-conference transfers to make any of those questions relevant.  Just my guess though.

The only real reason this is an issue now is because the player in question is an All-Conference player that's moving to a program that is already in the top tier of the league.  Would it be quite as big a deal if Suckow was transferring to Dubuque or BV?  I doubt it.  And what about all the previously stated examples of non-stars moving from one conference school to another?  Guess I missed the outrage when Tyler Lown transferred to Cornell or when Cara Hegner (women's basketball player) went from Cornell to Central.

I'm with NorseFan and sportsknight on this.We could "what if" this forever and still not come up with a satifactory answer to everyone. The beauty of football is that if you're one of the 22 best players on a team, you'll play.If you're not,you either work hard to become one,or shut up and be ready if your opportunity comes.A true team player will welcome any quality addition that improves the team's chances for winning,no matter where he came from.

Sportsnight, extra reason for the interest in Suckow's transfer is the company he worked for this summer i believe was a construction company.  To add to that, for the other posters out there, who's house was he building this summer, none other than coach koehler's.  Perfect opportunity to steal your competitions stud.  That might be a reason for some more response to this transfer.

Wartburg fan

Knightfootball do you know this for a fact or is this just rumor.  I don't believe Coach K would do anything wrong. I do know some of the kids that work with Suckrow this summer it was for a roofing company

Walston Hoover

To put an end to the speculation, yes Neil Suckow worked for Steege Construction this summer who was doing some work on Koehler's house.
Did Koehler hire Steege Construction because Suckow worked for them? Heck no.
Can you imagine the outrage at Coe if Koehler even said something in jest to Neil about transferring over the summer. I know it didn't happen anyway but I don't think ANY coach that's smart enough to get a head job would approach another team's player about transferring.
