I would also have a hard time believing they  are as good as Zearley and King.  Those two were quite impressive on their own.

When "Zearlacher" and King were seniors, Noah Junge was a soph on that unit as well so you had 3 future All-IIAC guys on the line. If this group is even close to that talented its going to be a long year for opposing Offenses.
On a side note, I was excited to see that Wartburg is going to be playing St. Norby's next year in non conference. That should be a better test that I still expect my Knights to win.

DutchHawk since I have not quite figured out how everyone is quoting eachothers statements, this is the best that I can do.

In regards to the gray****ting I have heard of this.  I had a couple friends from the west coast who were good players out of high school and had academic issues with the clearing house and getting into the actual school.  They were offered a "grayshirt" at the d1 level.  This was a condition where they could be part of the "team" but not practice.  Once there grades hit where they needed to be then they were eligiable for all practices and then could even have a "redshirt".  So this was keeping some of them there for 6 years if they played this all out.

Now these kids were kind of flakes and I kind of doubted what they were saying.  They chose to go to D2 schools in MO and MN because even though there grades were up to par they could be on the scout team.  Thus showed there abilitities while getting there grades up.  This also allowed them to not miss a season of any football action.

If anyone has anymore insight into this please let me know.  Again this what I was told by a few friends from the west coast who I will admitt to being flakey.

My understanding is that is indeed what a grayshirt is -- the player cannot participate in any practices. They're not a member of the team. At some places I think they're treated like managers (except that I know occasionally managers are inserted to run play in basketball and that is a no go). They do not lose a year of eligibility. Of course, they don't play, either.

That '03 defense was without question the best I've ever seen.  Vinny, Z, Junge, Mark Kappmeyer and Brad Culbertson working in up on the line.  Stoffel, Bishop, and AP the second at the LB spots.  Cody and Gene Thomas on the corners with McIntire and Burns at the safety spots.  I'm still not sure how anyboyd score points against that unit.

Having gone against Vince many a time in college, I still haven't see a D-lineman as good as him at the D3 level.  He would often get the ball from the center before the QB would.  So I would put those guys up as one hell of a D-line.
Didn't he do that a time or two in the playoff game against Bethel?  Dude was unreal.

You making the trip?  I would have liked to go on the bus, but I have a few HS FB things to wrap up on Sat. AM that are requiring me to miss the 6:00 departure time.  Should be a good game, but I still say its a game Central should win.

I guess Koehler's comment - "We've had some pretty good ones with (Vince) King and J.J. (Zearley), but this is as good as any in the six years I've been here." - wasn't a surprise to only me, looks like many others on here agree that the '03 knights defense was one of the best around.  I agree with DutchHawk that if this current group is as good as the head coach says they are, I would be expecting some preseason honors as well.  I guess they will just have to prove themselves and hope we can see some post season honors after a playoff appearance.

I would continue the conversation regarding Vinny K.  That cat could flat out play.  I witnessed him sunt to the tight side tackle, see a screen pass to the split side, and then proceed to chase the play down 15 yards later.  This is also considering the O line did there job and the tackle fanned him outside.  Hard to coach again that kind of talent.  Hard to ridicule a kid for getting beat a play like that.

.............but to the immense pleasure of three other '03 Knights, Vinny could never beat the Muskies.  :D

If Koehler is already comparing these guys to some of the monsters the Knights have had in recent years on the defensive line, then the IIAC could be in for another run of tough Wartburg squads... :(

They sure started off well. I know Monmouth's defense wasn't supposed to be good, but I thought their O had several guys returning from last year. Any time your starting unit shuts someone out, it is something to be proud of.

So according to the Cornell website, the finish to the Northwestern vs. Cornell game was supposed to be on ESPN yesterday during their college football show and again at halftime of the Cincinatti game.  Anybody catch it?

Purple Heys

I recorded the Halftime show of the OSU-Cincy game and did not see it on that show upon review.

I did not get a chance to record College FB Live show earlier.  I've looked at the ESPN site and on youtube too.

Good luck to all IIAC teams and especially to the now, nationally reknown Rams!   ;)

See what happens...they get a little run on this board and the next thing you know they're a national story.

;D
