Anybody out there have any special recipes for us we might use???

1 cup     sour cream
1 cup     mayonnaise
1 cup     mustard
1/2 cup  sugar
1/4 cup  dried onions (minced or flakes)
1 TBS.    horseradish
1 oz.      ranch dressing mix (1 package)

mix together, cover and refrigerate for 30+ mins. then serve with pretzels

This stuff is amazing...no mystery why I was an O-lineman.  I plan on whipping up a batch to eat while listening the Wartburg/BV game and watching Notre Dame/Michigan this weekend.

I coach a small 9 man football team in MN, and being smaller teams there is little to no depth so if anybody is out, there is no one behind to fill the enormous hole.

My high school converted to 9-man football just a few years after I graduated.  Depth was DEFINITELY a problem when we faced other teams...especially when we were still played 11 man and had limited numbers (about 30 kids on the roster my senior year...this was 9th-12th grade).  If our star runningback was out for injury or ineligibility it was a weakness that was hard to hide and many teams could easily benefit from this.  At the high school level there is also a good chance your athletes play in all three parts of the game making it even more of a weakness when one of the better players is out.

I also know at a high school level this raises concerns of a weaker younger player stepping in against bigger stronger opponents.  A Freshman who has only played 2 years of Jr. High football having to run the ball against Juniors and Seniors at biggger schools could easily turn into major injuries (this was one big issure my senior year).

MNbeev - where do you coach?  Did your school convert over as well...did you run into issues like this?

Theone,
I'm on the Blue Jay coaching staff in Truman MN.  And everything you said is exactly the concerns we have.  our roster 9-12 grade is 25 players. And every senior we have is a critical player.  If our QB goes down, we have a frosh to replace him that, well has never played football...Most of the freshman are afraid to go into the game when they are facing senior/junior players that would easily demolish them, so it is a huge concern for players/parents, for injuries, but most of the coaches we play against are great, seeing our JV going in and then subbing theirs, if there is a huge differential in score...Also, yes every offensive starter is a defensive starter, along with special teams (everyone) so during any game the other team has a huge advantage.  But conditioning them well is a key factor.

-And we just converted to nine man 2 years ago...Being in our second year of 9-man it is a hard adjustment for the guys.

I think its a totally different world in fb games for high schools with maybe 150 students and colleges with 150 men dressed for practice.  So focusing on the college end, any team who believes a win against a team with an injured stud is less meaningful is primed to be beaten.  Taking an opponenet lightly is the biggest reason in the world for upsets.  Football is  great game because of the ultimate team concept and so an injured stud has far less impact in a good football team than on a baketball or baseball team.  Central has an excellent FB team, they'll be fine.

Whats up with no Iowa/ISU smack talk this week.  ISU may be bad, but Iowa has guys in the court system rather than in class!!

How many batteries does it take to shock ISU?

This stuff is awesome!  You have to bring some for Homecoming next month.

TheOne and Beev.
I am spoiled. I have 23 OL on my sophomore team.
Since numbers will only get smaller at any other school I go to, I wonder what I did starting out coaching at Dowling. Definitely spoiled numbers-wise.

I have 45 freshman on my squad this year...but only half of them show up for practice every day  ???

Do you coach in Iowa DoubleJ?
Don't have a problem really with kids not showing up for practice here. If they don't come, they don't play until they have run 6 miles.

At least that stadium fills up on a regular basis.

Did you guys hear one of the libraries at Iowa State burned down.  Naturally, some of the Cyclone players were disappointed.  They hadn't gotten a chance to color in all of the books yet.

I am in Chicago at one of the Public League Schools, Curie High School...and it is a completely different mentality here.  I played in NW Illinois at a small school and would have never thought to skip practice.  That is just one of the many bad habits that the coaches are trying to change here in Chicago and get our program heading in the right direction.
