Every great small-college rivalry should have a disputed game. Part of the charm. :)

I agree with that Pat.  With the proximity to those schools and the length or the rivalry it also adds to it IMHO.

Charlie,

you peaked my curiousity on this.  Do you know the story behind the dispute.  I would like to hear about it just for the record.  I think those old stories are interesting from a fans and historic point of view.
Since you ask, here's the story. In that 1902 contest, Coe claims a 6-5 victory over Cornell, while the Rams say that they won the game 11-6. Most contests at that time consisted of two halves, 30 minutes each. But before this particular game, both squads and the referee agreed to play two 20-minute halves. However, the timekeeper was unaware of this change and allowed an extra 4 and 1/2 minutes to expire in the opening half before anyone realized the mistake. Coe had already led 6-0 at the end of 20 minutes when Cornell scored during the extra 4 1/2 minute span.

These go back before my time at Wartburg, but back in the late 90's a Wartburg student rented a small plane and dropped Wartburg leaflets over the Luther campus.  Then in the fall of 98, students from Wartburg's radio station "crashed" the Luther Homecoming parade under the guise of the Lanesboro, MN Nature Enthusiasts Club and "cut the cake" in front of the judging stand.  Good stuff.

More of my memories to come...

My friends have told me of the air drop incident.  Unfortunately for the pilot very few peices of paper hit the campus.  Creative none the less.

Wartburg leaflet drop.
If I remember correctly after the pilot was cited for littering or something funds were raised on campus and more than enough $'s were raised.

While looking for past Trumpet (school newspaper) articles about the flight I came across a column by one angry columnist about the LC painting incident.

I wonder what ever happened to that kid. ??? ;D

AEN,

I sure am glad that kid who wrote that article did say that about the Dutch.  In this world you never know where you wind up or what hand will feed you.   ;D

If he would have said that about Simpson, probably would have heard from their SID though. :P

Alfred,
After today's discussions, I looked that column up as well.  Don't really remember writing it, because I put it together at halftime of the Wartburg loss to Coe, and Iowa was losing at the same time.  I was pretty much in a blind rage.
Also, I believe that column elicited the first Letter to the Editor in response to one of my writings.  The first of many.

The entry in Luther parade was THE Outdoor Nature Enthusiasts  "THE ONE".  It also helps to have a Luther student - sibling of a participant as an insider to get the entry into the parade.  A great "no property damage" prank.

I actually work (and am also good friends with) the guy who thought up and kind of lead this prank.  We were just talking the other day about how perfect this prank really was.  As mentioned...no property was damaged, wartburg t-shirts they were wearing were tasteful, and I'm sure many of the Luther grads and students who witnessed the pranks, although upset that Wartburg had pulled a fast one on them, probably did have a small smile on their facing wishing they had thought that up.

I always wanted to pull a prank of that magnitude while I was at Wartburg, but I could never come up with one quite as good.

As one who had to clean up BLUE LC's all over campus in 2002.

You made the front page picture of the Trumpet for that clean-up didn't you?  You haven't gotten that kind of press since PTI...or various CWIASW news.

Congratulations to Tommy Brietbach (again) and Central's Kurtis Brondyke for their places on Week 3's Team of Week.  Looks like Brietbach is showing he is a possible IIAC MVP candidate.

Just to get some discussion going on this week's games, I thought I'd post my picks for the week from the Pick 'Em board.  I'll probably do this from now on, unless Pat puts the kibosh on it.

Central over Loras - The Dutch definitely have some kinks to work out.  3-0 is a great spot to be in, but the rush defense and offensive line looked pretty beatable against Luther.  The Rock Bowl will be a good place to right the ship.  Loras will score some because of the McGrew kid, but the Dutch D settles down in the second half.

BV over Coe - Coe was somewhat unimpressive in the win over Simpson, despite being able to get to 3-0 as well.  A couple weeks back I called this a trap game for Coe, and I still believe that.  BV always plays better at home, and the Beavs will be out to prove the Wartburg drubbing was a fluke.

Dubuque over Simpson - Last year I think I called this one a matchup of programs moving in opposite directions, and that still holds true.  Simpson was a playoff contender just 4 years ago, the same season that Sparty went 0 for the conference.  How different things are now.

Wartburg over Luther - Luther showed some flashes against Central, but Wartburg has a more balanced offense and a better D.  Knights will win, but its a close game if Sherden has a big game or Yordi doesn't perform.  If either of those things go the other way, this one might become a runaway.

Are you from the same town as the perpatrater and the LC contact?

And do I know you by you providing me "home town" soda? If so I haven't gotten a delivery lately.

Just wonderin'
