AEN,

your guess about Duane's insightful 2000 article was correct.
I  just went and checked and the 20-17 WB-Luther score was the 99' season

Walston, nice memory, impressive resume..

is Bruns still helping out at Valley? I saw him interviewing Chezik @ halftime last weekend on the Big Ten Network(by the way, one of the best channels invented )

Here's how I remember the Wartburg-Luther rivalry:

Pre-college:  Spent an overnight visit at Wartburg the weekend of the Luther game back in the fall of '00.  Great time.  Campus was still buzzing from the big Homecoming comeback against BV and the Luther game brought a bunch of fans out.  Hearing "Ring of Fire" on the loudspeaker at Schield was eternally cool.

2001-02:  Football game was nothing special that year, but the home basketball game was the night the orange "Go Knights" t-shirts debuted and Knights Gym was absolutely rocking.  Video evidence:  http://wartburg.edu/real/videos/lutherrivalry.wmv

2002-03:  First football game at Luther in a while.  Didn't go, but all reports were that the Wartburg crowd almost outnumbered the Luther fans.  Basketball games were fun, including Wartburg fans cheering when KWWL's Ron Steele showed up in an orange shirt.  Also was the year of the aforementioned vandalism incidents.

2003-04:  Don't really remember the football game this year, except for one of our TV staff members sneaking onto the field and dancing behind the Luther dance team at halftime.  Basketball game was nuts.  Back and forth chants and near fisticuffs postgame.  All caught on WTV.  I remember one of the more vocal Wartburg fans being asked to go see Pres. Ohle the week after the game for a reprimand, and the next year the same young man was a student assistant for the team.

2004-05:  Luther football was Homecoming.  Walston Hoover was just packed.  A 54 yard Hammes run got the Knights up early, but Sherden ran back the opening kick of the 2nd half and there were flashbacks to the Coe game two years earlier.  But the Knights held on and erased the memory of a loss to BV a week earlier.  On the basketball side of things, both games were total blowouts.

2005-06:  Not a fun year.  Luther wins football and basketball contests in Decorah.  Knights win hoops matchup in Waverly, but didn't get any favors from the striped shirts.  I remember asking one of the refs how his whistle tasted when he swallowed it.

I was shown video clips of the Olsen and Schoonover shots, as well as the Bo Harris break-up and those are pretty awesome as well, but were just a bit before my time.

Since it appears people are opposed to herbicide on playing surfaces and destruction of property, I guess I don't have much to add.  ;)

GO KNIGHTS!

Warty, Roundup doesn't work on FieldTurf. (Better let the Minnesota schools know.)

Refresh my memory.  Was it Laing or Devine who fired up the defense at half time by telling the team he wasn't going to lose to a bunch of pillow biters?  >:(

Are you from the same town as the perpatrater and the LC contact?

And do I know you by you providing me "home town" soda? If so I haven't gotten a delivery lately.

Just wonderin'

AEN

The one and only!  Joe's Knighthawk burrito eating champ (I read your post earlier this year of my almost second title at the La Crosse Loggers game) as well.  I plan on being back for homecoming, let me know what kind SG soda you want and I will make sure to pick up a pack or two.

Your post did remind me of one thing I do actually like about Decorah (so I guess you can kind of include Luther in that)...Mabe's Pizza = best pizza ever.

Enough of the o-lineman food talk...Good Luck Knights!  I agree with SportsKnight...Sherden is a dangerous threat to the Knights.  If Wartburg's D has any trouble with him or if the Norse finally start getting sacks instead of just knockdowns, it could be a Luther victory on Saturday.

We'll let Johnny Red try to figure that out by himself.

With Linfield having a bye-week does Mrs. Coco have a long honey do list?

Hopefully the Wildcats and Knights can get together for Thankgiving weekend.  If they do I hope we get switched around in the seedings and you get to come out to enjoy a midwestern freeze your buns off holiday.

Warthog,

There's not much on the list yet, but there's still time. You have every Saturday filled from here on out with football, don't you?

We won't be traveling this Thanksgiving, as the Coco daughter is coming home from Hawaii that week for a visit. If we are lucky enough to have a playoff game then, I hope it's here.

Good luck with Luther on Saturday.

My dad grew up in Volga and went to those UIU/BV games all the time.
Warthog, I believe the question to your answer up above is "Who is D-Lineman Mo Lang?"

Coco,

Don't you have that turned around.  Shouldn't you be going to see your daughter. Bad planning on your part.

Here's an article written by the late WC SID Duane Schroeder written for d3football.  BY the URL I'm guessing 2000

That is a great article. RIP Duane.

Ditto!  I often hear stories of how good the Norse were in football in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, but I did not know that the roster sizes were so different in Decorah at the time from the other schools in the league.

BV over Coe - Coe was somewhat unimpressive in the win over Simpson, despite being able to get to 3-0 as well.  A couple weeks back I called this a trap game for Coe, and I still believe that.  BV always plays better at home, and the Beavs will be out to prove the Wartburg drubbing was a fluke.

Dubuque over Simpson - Last year I think I called this one a matchup of programs moving in opposite directions, and that still holds true.  Simpson was a playoff contender just 4 years ago, the same season that Sparty went 0 for the conference.  How different things are now.

This is a big game for the Beavers!  With a trip to Central coming up next week, this home game against Coe might show whether the Beavers are going to finish around .500 in league play after an 0-3 start or much higher this season.  Coe is 3-0 and has tradition, but B.V. has played the tougher schedule so far.  Both teams have QBs capable of putting up big numbers, but both squads have to be concerned with how they have run the ball so far this year.

Any chance the Knights might take the Norse for granted and start looking ahead to the Spartans next week? ;D Dubuque has not played anyone as of yet, but they have crushed the opposition the way that a good team is supposed to.  That is going to be the interesting game for next week if the Spartans play well this Saturday.

Wartburg will never look past Luther. They can't. Remember just 2 years ago the Norse were victors in Decorah. Its Beat Luther! week at Wartburg. I even printed off a poster for my office.
