Airborne Dutch

Floyd, great point about successful programs. I think its important to point out that in 2003 and 2004, the Dutch were going through an unprecedented time of change in the program. Even when it seemed like we were down in 2004, we still only lost 3 conference games by a combined total of 13 points so that year we it could have ranged anywhere from 6-4 to 9-1. I think its a testament to Coach McMartin how quickly they have gotten back on track. Since losing to Coe in 2005, the Dutch have a record of 21-2, with the only losses coming in the playoffs.

ENP, was Doud out too? You said all the captains were in jeans. I knew Vance and Dustyn were out. Valid points about Central's play on Saturday. For the past two years, Vance has been the workhorse of the running game and I've always been a little worried about the depth. Not saying that Central doesn't have capable backups, but they also don't have a back that can take the game over like #8 can. The last month of the season is going to be very exciting. Everything I keep hearing about Wartburg makes them a very dangerous team. I've heard Suckow's name pop up here and there, but does anyone have any insight on how his presence has affected the team? I'm anxious to see how Central plays Dubuque. It seems like we always have their number. They'll have a real tough team, but then we'll come in and really handle them. I don't think thats going to be the case this year, but it will be interesting to see.

I didn't think the d looked tired as they looked tenative.
They didn't look all that tired to me either...I'm going off of what McMartin told me post-game, which was that all that time out on the field took its toll on the D.

Quote from: DutchFan2004 on September 23, 2007, 10:54:58 PMI thought that they might try to put pressure on Loras when they pinned them to the one yard line, but looked to play the bend but don't break.  Maybe they thought that they could just drop a few and pick one off.
I can see that.  Probably better to not give up the deep ball and force Loras to nickel and dime their way down the field.  I thought Loras' play calling was much better in the second half.  First half it seemed like it took them way too long to figure out that the run wasn't working and McLaughlin wasn't able to hit McMahon.  You can't try to bang your head against the wall like that.  2nd half they opened it up a bit more and spread the ball around, which helped keep the Dutch D guessing.

As far as the Loras PA goes...ugh.  The guy mispronounced everything in Red and White (I didn't even know that Central had a Brent Doud).  He clearly hadn't asked anyone to go thru the names with him, or a lot of those mistakes would have been cleared up.
Not sure why they needed to crank the speakers to 11 for the halftime stuff.  When you only have seating on one side of the field, that's totally unneccesary.
Screaming Hawk was dumb, but it was funny listening to them trying to find that sound effect on the CD during the pregame.  We went thru pigs grunting, a cow mooing, and crickets chirping before we got to the Hawk.  For a second there, I thought the Loras cheerleaders had gotten a hold of the mic.

Saturday just proved that some things just never change-I went to watch Winona State at Upper Iowa and our old friends the Peacocks had 11 penalties for 103 yards. I believe the number was 5 personal fouls and a clipping call on the Quarterback, yes the Quarterback who decided after he threw the ball down the field to take out a DL at the knees and sent the DL out for a couple quarters. UIU had a punt blocked and got dominated 41-0. Helluva job out of the WSU linebackers coach.
Some things never change-Central gets a lead and holds on in the end to win another game that the other team had no business being in. The Dutch make these games much closer than they need to be.
Some things never change. For the 16th time in the last 17 years. The Knights prove they are the dominant Lutheran football program in the state. Luther played well enough on defense to win, but the Knights 1st unit defense holds the opposition out of the endzone.
Some things never change-Iowa State had 8 opportunities for a player to step up and make a play in the last 5 minutes of their game and of course none did and they go on to lose on a missed field goal.
Some things never change-Iowa plays to the level of their competition and only scored 1 TD again in a loss.
Some things never change-Cornell goes another week without a conference win  ;)

Sounds like there were some good games this weekend in the conference. Madison was crazy!! Too bad the hawks lost though, but I still had a good time.

It definitely seems like Wartburg is firing on all cylinders right now or at least appears to be. Coes defense continues to impress. Central even though winning ugly a win is a win. Can't wait to get back to the Iowa Conference action this week!!

Walston why the Cornell stab buddy? I'm still hurting from the hawks loss then you throw in a stab at my rams.  ;)

Some things DO change-Dubuque 3-0 for the first time since 1982...and I believe that "old guy" on here Spurrier was on that last Dubuque team to do that ;D

And as WH says some things never change-Dubuque had 13 penalties for 110yds

So was Mcgrew the RB from Loras that was injured on Sat? If so, how serious? I hope he can get back and play this season. He was off to a good start in his senior year.

Loras actually had their 3 top to RBs knocked out with injuries.  The 3rd stringer did something to his arm (not sure if it was a dislocated or separated shoulder, but he was in pain) on a punt return in the 2nd quarter, McGrew separated his shoulder sometime in the 3rd, and freshman Olijuwon Davis was carted off after injuring his ankle in the 2nd quarter.  Looked like they had a boot on him, so I'd guess it was a broken ankle or something along those lines, but not sure.

i must be blind because i was sure i saw bleachers on the other side of the rock bowl (sat there once i thought)   but i'm probably wrong i was wrong when someone told me that the dutch fans were arogant and i said that they were not
but like i said i was wrong...  sounds like you don't think central should have to bother to even play anyone but wartburg no body else is worthy of playing you

How did everyone come out this weekend health wise?  I know that some of the big guys didn't play this weekend with injuries, but anything new?

I was unable to attend any games this weekend (first time in almost 3 years) so I tried to catch up through stats, press releases, and posts on here.  A couple of things caught my eye:

1. There is no way that Pierce made 17 solo tackles in the game against Coe.  I am not saying anything suspicious about BV SID, but maybe there is some confusion about what a solo tackle is.

2. I find it interesting how Suckow isnt getting nearly as many touches as a Knight as he did as a Kohawk.

3. Wartburg is for real folks.

4. Luther is a one man show.  Sherdan will not make it through the season.

5. Dubuque better come to play every week from opening kickoff or they will not make the transition to being mentioned with the three in this conference.  Being down by that many to a Simpson team that has shown nothing (except heart) so far this year in unexcusable.

6. The new rule to move the kickoff line is having a much larger impact on the games than I would have thought.  The playmakers in the conference are getting more and better chances to make plays in special teams than ever before.

The box score says 14 solo, eight assisted.

For what it's worth, the box has an appropriate number of tackles for the game: 42 solo, 30 assisted (aka, another 15 stops). Coe rushed 36 times and completed 22 passes, fumbled once and scored two touchdowns (which would not have tackles). Three returns on special teams. Certainly some times players ran out of bounds untouched, etc. It's at least a reasonable number of total tackles, if nothing else.
