Question for anyone who played/coached against the Knights D since '01-What made them so good? As an offensive player, I really only saw our defense in 1 on 1 stuff and other than going against Vinny K, most of us held our own. Was it the scheme? the players?
2. Players--There were some very talented players on those squads---McIntire (sp?) King, Zearley, Kelley, Hodapp, Hammes, Breitbach, Bouska, Hoskins, Winter, etc.  Those are just some of the names that I recall talking about frequently during our game-planning at Luther.

No mention of the name "Pollock" !?!?  I guess other IIAC didn't know who Wartburg's real threats were.

It was great getting out to see another Wartburg/Luther game this year.  Even got myself a little bit of a sunburn down at Carlson stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  I know people (me included) keep comparing this Knights Defense to that of teams like 2002, and they just might be right.  Looked like the game would be a defensive battle until the Knights Offense pulled a little trickeration on 4th down to DE Eric Bruhn (kind of reminded me a Jeff Vories tackle eligible special) which set up a nice TD pass to Duchman that really put some push behind the Knights.  A couple of key INT's for Wartburg helped avoid Luther scores early on.

I was very impressed by the Luther Def. as well though....they really were hitting the Knights Offensive players hard.  Not sure how Wartburg's two first games went, but this one looked very physical.  A couple of big guys up front for the Norse.

In the end, looked like Wartburg may have been in a little better condition to keep them going for the whole 60 min.  Looks like once Wartburg gets on a roll, they may be be tough to stop.

Looks like another big game for the Knights next weekend.  DBQ has been pretty impressive this year...UD hasn't started 3-0 in my entire lifetime (thought I saw someone mentioned since 1982).  In my experiences of watching the Spartans play, they have a lot of talented guys who can win games as long as they play as a team and don't try to take the spotlight.  I would love to make the trip to the wonderful city of Dubuque this weekend, unfortunately (or fortunately) there will be a good supply of brats and beer this weekend for the start of Oktoberfest.  Good luck to the Knights and the rest of the IIAC.

Charlie Kohawk

Hat's off to Coe for another hard-fought victory and helmet stickers all around for the defensive shutout. I wasn't able to attend the game as the schedule called for my annual trip to Lambeau Field (well worth the trip, by the way), but it looks as if the Kohawks played the mistake-free offense and bone-crushing defense that has become this team's signature. (Come to think of it, there are a lot of similarities between the Packers and the Kohawks, not the least of which is they're both undefeated.)

Looking at the statistics, a few things jumped out at me:
Turnovers -- BV 4, Coe 0. The Kohawks are now +9 on the year.
Sacks -- Coe 6, BV 0. Looks like Coe's young line is coming along quite well.
Tackles for loss -- Coe 11, BV 3. (Jordan Wilkens alone had more TFLs that the entire Beaver defense)

4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Things looking good for the spartans so far ... don't remember when the last time was I could say that!!!!  ;D

I was talking to my nephew at Loras and found out that they are pretty thinned out at the RB position and that Hall was stepping in on the O to go along with his defensive duties!!  Can anyone from Loras confirm this?

Congrats to all the winners this past week.

Purple Heys

W-H:  You mean Cornell successfully navigated the Bye Week without a loss!   ;)

I love the fact that the Rams are getting some run even in a Bye Week.  Any pub we get is good pub.  Go ahead and diss away...at least yer talkin' about us.

Despite my earlier rants, Luther WILL be a challenge.  Sherden is the real deal and McGrew looked like an All-American against us.  McGrew is good and plays hard, but Sherden is a stud.  He will be tough.  Sorry to hear McGrew got banged up, hopefully he heals quick.

Hopefully Central and Wartburg tenderized Sherden a bit...

The Cornell idea will be to put some points up early and take Mr. Sherden out of the game by making Luther take to the air.  Then the Serbian Sack-Meister can pin his ears back and wreak a little havoc.

I said it before, so believe me know and I'll tell you later...the Rams are not 1-dimensional...if Luther had trouble with Wartburg's TE, they are going to have their hands full with Cornell's TE and the rest of the receiving corp.  They are big, they are athletic, and they only need Kobler to take what the D gives and not try to force things. (Kudos to Krogmann).

Airborne Dutch

Dutchfan, welcome back. We met a few years ago when I was a notorious member of the Beakes. Central-Wartburg 2004. Anyways, congratulations to Kurtis Brondyke for being named IIAC player of the week. Sounds like we didn't miss a beat with our punting game. The great thing about Vermeer was that he was able to boom and place the kicks and it sounds like Brondyke certainly has the placing part down. Its really nice to have a weapon like that.

Not to question anybody's college choice, but if Suckow wasn't happy with his role at Coe why did he go to Wartburg? It seems like he is being used in a lesser role and not on the edge, where he was truly dangerous. Its been talked about before, but any insight on why he didn't choose to go to one of the Big 3 schools? In some conference games, he was on a different level then his compeitition.

It's only Monday frickin' night, 4 days until gameday.

We need a new topic other than Why did Neil go to Wartburg?  The kid made his choice, it's his business.  Wish him the best and let it go.

Try this:  If Wartburg at #13 beats Central at #8, is it an upset?

Second topic:  Should IIAC teams recruit harder out of State?  Or even, can they successfully do so and benefit?

Heys,
Im not going to compare outcomes for Central vs Cornell until they play. As for Loras I dont know what happened and I wasnt thrilled with it but Ill take the W.

Coe fans - whats the word on the Beavers this week?

Hopefully Schuring is back and it would be nice to not have to be looking to rely on him so heavily but the series he had against St Thomas looked good, just didnt see much action after that. Hate to see one of the best in the league sit out so much his senior season.

Tough luck for Schuring and Central, I enjoyed watching him play last year.  If Schuring doesn't make it back, can he appeal for a medical hardship and get the year back?

Not that it actually belongs but...

How is it that Cubs have a bigger lead in their division than in either of the other divisions in the NL and the Red Sox?

What a weird weekend:  App State loses to Wofford and Michigan beats Penn State and looks like the team they were expected to be before App State.

Utah beats UCLA 44-6, then loses to UNLV 27-0...are you kidding me?   UCLA is down to their 3rd string QB...a walk-on... UCLA still beats the Huskies.

And the best one of all, Mt. Union is a 61.5 point favorite and wins by 62!

THAT'S why I don't bet College Football.   :D

Sorry TheOne...I just started throwing around names that I remembered the quickest probably because the guys that I mentioned always seemed to have huge games against the Norse.  Nothing against Pollock...and I do remember the name after he was mentioned.  Another good LB for the Knights, but was probably over-shadowed by King, Zearley and Kelley.  Not bad company to be in  :)  And the Knight defense this year should draw comparisons to the 2002 defense from everything that I have heard and read about them this year.  It sounds like they did an excellent job containing Sherden from getting loose.  I remember someone (can't remember who) mentioning earlier this year that the Knights seem to be changing the defensive players from bigger, stronger guys to guys that can run sideline to sideline and make plays.  I think the change is working.  Sherden is not an easy guy to keep bottled up and credit needs to be given to the Knights for slowing him down.

Walston...you were a senior my first year at Luther so I don't know a whole lot about the LB's you played against.  You did, however, get to play against John Jaeger.  He is the all-time leader in tackles at Luther.  And I believe, he was a sophomore in 2002 and he got better every year.  Who do you recall being the toughest guys to go against from Luther in your time as a Knight?

Since the game is being played in Waverly, I would say no.  That is a long road trip and Walston Hoover Stadium is a very tough place to play.  And, if both teams are still undefeated on Nov. 10th, they could be ranked even closer than they are now. IF I had to pick this game now, I go with the Knights.  Tough defense playing at home will get my pick in a very close matchup.

Shouldn't have started this one Heys...I am already getting excited for this game and its still more than a month away  :)

Because the Brewers have blown something like 16 games where they have led by 3 runs or better.  The Brew Crew should be leading the division by 10 + games and preparing for the postseason...youth will do that...next year I predict they win the central by those 10+ games.

Heys,
Schuring can only get a medical hardship if he played in less than, I believe 33% of the season.  usually less then 3.5 games.  Also the injury has to be considered season ending, and a whole lot of paper work goes into that, these forms have to be reviewed by the Iowa Conference.  He gets a hardship, if and only if it is approved it can be considered a medical hardship and he can gain another year of play.

Add in the fact that Pittsburgh, Cincinnatti, St. Louis and Houston all suck this year.  Every other division had two or three teams competing for playoff spots until this last week of the season.  The good divisions are closer top to bottom and the NL has two teams that have been beating up on the bottom 4 teams.

dbljay-
It was Pettlon (sp?) hands down. He had the hardest knees of anyone in the IIAC.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Jon Pettlon was very good LB for the Norse.  Very good football player and a great guy.
