Looking up the stats from the UD/Coe game I have a question.  How does Dubuque end with 38:29 in time of possession and Coe end with 36:31 in time of possession?  Even if you added OT which you wouldn't Dubuque scored a TD in 4 plays and then Coe was intercepted in 1 play.  I don't think that would equal 15 extra minutes.
For some reason, the stat program gave Dubuque 15 minutes of possession in overtime. The SID is aware and working to fix it. He has already corrected the game-ending fumble (which was clearly not an interception from my vantage point under the goal posts 25 yards away) and Jeremy Squires' INT return yardage. Regarding the INT vs. FAC (fumble after the catch), I'm told the SID was the only person in the press box, including members of the "unbiased" media, who thought it was an interception. It would have helped all concerned if the ball had hit the ground, but it wouldn't have made a bit of difference in the outcome.

In looking at playoff implications, I'd say Wartburg's loss to Auggie (at home) is much worse than Bethel's loss at BV.  BV is much more competitive in the IIAC than Auggie appears to be so far in the MIAC, and with St. John's leading the way from the northland, the MIAC has a much better playoff record than the IIAC.  So if its Wartburg or Bethel as conf. runners up for an at large has to go to Bethel.  Same for Wartburg or St. Olaf.  If they would ever take three teams from one conference (WIAC), Wartburg would have no chance, unless they get the AQ.

As good as DBQ looks these days, how many Knight fans found it just as alarming to lose to them at home last year in the final week with a playoff spot on the line???  Looking past opponents happens every week (Stanford over USC???)  but to do it in that scenerio is hard to fathom.

First sorry about the last post, hit the wrong button.
dbljay21. ref; your question if it falls of the coachs for the engery or the players. To me that a very good question. I think some of it falls on the coach to make sure the plays understand how important every game is. But the players are the one on the field and if they are looking pass a team, I don't think there must a coach can do on game day. I would really like to hear from the coachs on the post. I'm not sure if you asked the question about Wartburg looking pass anyone before. I think they looked pass Dubuque last year cause all the talk that week was who they would play in they plays after they beat Dubuque.

Wartburg Fan, I agree with you completely.  Coaches can only do so much for the players on gameday.  And we ran into this problem at Curie this season...it was our second conference game and we completely over looked our opponent.  We have a better football team than Whitney Young but they beat us 14-9 because we weren't focused.  Our defense played outstanding (only giving up 30 yards of total offense) but turnovers and penalties on offense killed our chances of winning that game and winning conference.  The only touchdown for us came on a punt return at the end of the half, which put us up 9-8...one turnover in the second half leads to a touchdown for Young and we lose.  The coaches did everything they could to get the offense focused and execute but, in the end, the players play the game... >:(

This game showed our kids two things: 1.) don't take any game for granted...anyone can win on any given day. 2.) all three phases of the game are needed to win

Since our loss to Whitney Young, we have dominated football games offensively and defensively (36-0, 34-0, 42-8).  We finish the year against Lane Tech on Friday and we are looking to make some noise in the City Playoffs  :)

didn't know we were playing the patriots this week and the injury report didn't come out until kickoff time ;).  i know he has been hurt all year but any info on what he did last week.  i assume he will be playing with how big of a game this is for both teams

Makes EVERY game very important for the Dutch, the Kohawks, the Spartans and the Knights... :) Its going to get very interesting down the stretch in the IIAC as usual.  Right now, there are too many scenarios that could play out for the playoffs with 4 teams in contention...man, this is gonna be fun down the stretch  :)

"Starting defense!  A place at the table!!!!"

Nice reference.  Now all you need to do is put your head through a window.  ;D

Now, onto my thoughts from this last weekend:

1. Cornell's defensive backs must be terrible.  Taking nothing away AT ALL from what Hawkins and that passing game accomplished, but I am having a hard time believing that an offense can go from probably the worst in the conference to hanging 6 TD passes in one week.  BV is not good, so the Rams must be really bad defensively.  We will see as they have the top 4 still to play.

2. I wonder when the horsehoe will fall for the Dutch.  They actually remind me a lot of the Ohio State team that won the National Championship game vs Miami.  They won at leat 4 games along the way in the Big 10 that they had no buisness winning.  But, they kept grinding those games out making enough plays to win and eventually got to the championship game where the refs jobbed the Canes with that "pass interference" penalty.  We shall see if something like that is in store for these Dutchmen.  Can't argue with a team that keeps finding a way to win.

3. Luther needs to figure out how to the ball into the freakind end zone.  It is getting a bit rediculous that with those running backs and that offensive line that they keep kicking 20-25 yard field goals.  Pease is my boy, but if he is leading your team in scoring, you are in trouble.

4. Wartburg - wow!  Terrible loss.  Its not a good sign that you can't show up to play for a home game against a bad team.  The most troubling thing for me is that lack of production out of the ground game.  In a game where you should be physically dominant, you need to be able to rush for more than 3.4 yards per carry.  Is Suckow hurt or is he just not able to find the holes in the degense like in the past?  Warts better figure it out soon because the team that played this weekend will lose 2 more games.

5.  Finally, Coe v UD.  I will be the first to admit that UD played a much more physical game than I anticipated.  In fairness to my comments before the game, besides not commiting any penalties, UD did exactly what I thought they would.  Coe's D controlled UD ground game all day long and visa versa.  Jackson had many chances to make plays with his arm, but seemed more interested in playing catch with the Coe defensive backs than his own receivers.  He is not a very solid "QB" IMO.  If you force Jamar Jackson to beat you with his arm, he isnt going to hurt you.  I do not think the better team won on Saturday.  I was at the game and anyone that thought that UD was the better team was watching a different game than me.  Coe needed to get one first down on either of their final two posessions and they pulled the e-brake on their offense.  Being super conservative and allowing UD chances to make a big play.  Kohawk camp better figure out how to block for kicks.  They had a short FG blocked early in the game due to penetration and on the punt they seemed more interested in covering the kick rathing than blocking a guy that game right off of the right guard.  It is becoming an epidemic for the Kohawks as Central stole a game at Clark Field last year by blocking 3 punts.  As a Coe fan, those two things are getting irritating, but I don't want to take anything away from the Spartans.  They made the plays late in the game to win.  They were much more disciplined and focused than any team I have seen.  Congrats.

Polls should only really matter to those that create them, IMO.  All they do is create fictional drama.  What is an "upset" when you really sit back and think about it (or should I say to whom is it an upset)?  It's cliche, but "anything can happen on any given day."

I'm actually on the side of that SJU poster.  I really haven't seen anything out of the IIAC again this year that makes me think that our conference would make a stink in the post season ().  It hurts me to say that (being a Central fan), but I'm just not getting the impression that urgency to execute perfection is on anyone's mind.  The automatic bid from the IIAC has ended in heartache for this fan too many times in recent years.  Sure, there have been some close ones, but close only counts when dancing with big breasted women.

But then again, "anything can happen," I guess, and hopefully that "anything" can prove to be something other than heartache this year.

Just a couple of pennies out there...

I got a chance to read the paper after SJU's win from the hometown Minneapolis paper.  Sounds like they were 1 play away from having a big L.  The phrase Jonnie Magic was used quite often in the article.  As for Central your post got me thinking....I thought that Central was having a BETTER year than the fast few... Here is why

This is all through 6 games so far this year to last.  Central had already survived 2 overtime games last year.  none so far.  Central has scored 191 points so far as compared to 137.  They have given up 112 as compared to 63 (defense is a weakness)  Margin of victory however is still higher + 79 compared to + 73... Yardage this year and last Central has been outgained both years.  1997 this year to 1786 last year and given up 2282 to 1873.  Grind it out run the ball isn't this years central team and could be a downfall this year BUT it could mean better success in the playoffs being able to visit the endzone a few more times and move the ball more consistantly....Here's to hoping for a playoff win whomever gets to go! (being the welcome mat for most other conferences in the post season isn't a fun feeling)
