Polls should only really matter to those that create them, IMO.  All they do is create fictional drama.  What is an "upset" when you really sit back and think about it (or should I say to whom is it an upset)?  It's cliche, but "anything can happen on any given day."

I'm actually on the side of that SJU poster.  I really haven't seen anything out of the IIAC again this year that makes me think that our conference would make a stink in the post season ().  It hurts me to say that (being a Central fan), but I'm just not getting the impression that urgency to execute perfection is on anyone's mind.  The automatic bid from the IIAC has ended in heartache for this fan too many times in recent years.  Sure, there have been some close ones, but close only counts when dancing with big breasted women.

But then again, "anything can happen," I guess, and hopefully that "anything" can prove to be something other than heartache this year.

Just a couple of pennies out there...

I got a chance to read the paper after SJU's win from the hometown Minneapolis paper.  Sounds like they were 1 play away from having a big L.  The phrase Jonnie Magic was used quite often in the article.  As for Central your post got me thinking....I thought that Central was having a BETTER year than the fast few... Here is why

This is all through 6 games so far this year to last.  Central had already survived 2 overtime games last year.  none so far.  Central has scored 191 points so far as compared to 137.  They have given up 112 as compared to 63 (defense is a weakness)  Margin of victory however is still higher + 79 compared to + 73... Yardage this year and last Central has been outgained both years.  1997 this year to 1786 last year and given up 2282 to 1873.  Grind it out run the ball isn't this years central team and could be a downfall this year BUT it could mean better success in the playoffs being able to visit the endzone a few more times and move the ball more consistantly....Here's to hoping for a playoff win whomever gets to go! (being the welcome mat for most other conferences in the post season isn't a fun feeling)

I wouldnt say weve been the welcome mat...tough draws the last two years in SJU who Central played real tight, and then UWW the year before, lost by 20 (although Wesley lost by like 50some in the semifinal that year). I think Central is alright. If people start trying to stop the pass more that will open up the ground, if Schuring could play a whole game like he played in 05 and 06 that helps when he gets healthy finally. And lastly the defense has been crushed by injuries this year so far. So Im not one to worry yet!

**Not that I am trying to make excuses...just trying to point out some possible reasons for the differences!!

Central has played well but the stat you missed, and the one that makes this Central fan nervouse, is the records of the teams they have beaten so far this year.  I'm not going to lok it up right now, but I don't think the six teams they beat have ten wins amoungst them.  Coe will certainly be the biggest test of the year.

No doubt about the teams records so far.  But if you look I believe they are about the same as last year.  The out comes have been the same as last year and there have not been any OT games as there were last year.  We have the "meat" of the schedule remaining.  Coe, UD and Wartburg are remaining with Cornell in there as well.  Not the easy part of the schedule but with all the injuries that the Dutch have had getting the young players the PT has been a good thing for the team.  Luther which was an OT game that the Dutch could have (and maybe should have)
lost last year was a 7 point victory.  The other two opponents with OT we have yet to play so the heat is on the Dutch.  We will learn a lot about the team the next two weeks with the Kohawks and the Spartans as opponents.  Fun times for football fans coming up.

the welcome mat was referring to the IIAC record in the playoffs.  6-11 isn't in the top half but is better than the few o fers on the front page there.  wins with the teams last year compared to this year is 7 wins for the teams last year 5 for this year.  OT games make me more nervous than close decisions in regulation.  Check out the Des Monies register today giving D3 some props while the big boys struggle to see some wins.

Wartburg Fan

dbljay21:  I know most of the seniors on the Wartburg team and I think they learned a lesson from Saturdays game.  MY son played with those guys for 3yrs and has spoken to a couple of them and they are very upset with the performance on Saturday. I think you will see a different team the rest of the way out, not saying they will win every game but you won't see them look pass anyone. At least I hope so. Now the young guys on the team need to understand the importance of coming out ready to play every Saturday.

Wartburg Fan:

I don't doubt your son has spoken to some of the Knights and that they are upset about last week's performance.  My reaction however is, "What the hell did they learn from the loss to Dubuque in the final game last year?"  If getting knocked out of a chance to participate in the national playoffs isn't the kind of wakeup call to prevent overlooking another team, I don't know what is.

There are three possibilities here:
#1 Wartburg isn't as good as some of us thought or hoped.
#2 Augsburg isn't as bad as some of us thought or hoped.
#3 The Wartburg team is made up of some slow learners.

There has to be some explanation for a team to have the propensity to continually shoot itself in the foot.  2004-lose to Loras a 4-6 team, 2005-lose to Millikin a 5-5 team, 2006-lose to Dubuque a 6-4 team, 2007 lose to Augsburg currently a 2-3 team that has given up 183 points in the previous three games.

I don't mind a Wartburg loss when it comes at the hands of a better than average team.  I don't even mind a team that has a little swagger.  There is however a line that separates being confident and being cocky.  I'm affraid that at least once a season for the past four years, this team has crossed the line.

Wartburg football doesn't have the long successful heritage that allows the Knights to be anything other than a bunch of hard working, blue collar, ass kicking football players.  It is that type of work ethic and attitude that explains the successes of the past decade or so.  They just can't allow themselves to forget it once a year.

Or, perhaps, a combination of all three (although #2 seems least likely).  ;D
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Ash Park

I just heard today that Cornell and Coe are going to try to get a traveling trophy started either this year or next. Can anyone at Coe clarify this ? I definitely think that this being one of the oldest rivalries on this side of the Mississippi it would only fit to have some kind of traveling trophy. Of course this hasn't been much of a rivalry the past 6-7 years. Hopefully that is going to change soon.  ;D

Coe has been proposing a traveling trophy for about five years. Cornell has shown no interest.

Warthog-Pretty simple if you ask me-
2004-Weren't that good
2005-weren't that good
2006-making a comeback
2007-No excuse. Flat out shouldn't happen. Hopefully the players aren't dwelling on it like I am.
A loss this weekend will make the rest of the year meaningless.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

The Show

I'd take a stab at #3.

With as bad as the loss to Augsburg looked, I still think the Knights are our best shot to win a playoff game this year.
