Coach Hefty's policy was simple: don't break the law.  If it is illegal, don't do it.  Simple as that.  He trusted everyone to make good decisions.  If someone made a "bad decision" there were consequences depending on what happened and what the "bad decision" was.  Hefty also wanted to hear it from the player before he heard it from someone else.  If you made a bad choice, but owned up to it and told him, the consequences were usually less severe...except from the captains and other teammates.  Everyone was held accountable for their actions by the captains and teammates.  And their form of discipline was far worse than Hefty's, which I think is a good thing because it always meant more to me as a player knowing that if I did something stupid and let the team down, the captains were going to see to it that you paid for it.

Whats with the evil empire business?

Is it like Star Wars and that kind of empire, but instead of ruling the galaxy, Wartburg wants to rule the IIAC  ???

I think its a good idea for the team, everyone sacrifices together and holds each other accountable. If you got caught anywhere you had to run a fair amount and sit out of the next game regardless of who you were.

Right on DutchHawk...accountability and responsibility are two ideals that I have tried to instill into my team this year.  And by the end of the year, they started to get the idea.  I had a captain of my freshman team calling his teammates out because they skipped practice, and he called them out by name.  It was awesome to see my kids responding and believing in the system that we brought to Curie  :)  Now that I have some believers, we will find out how far they want to go...I am very excited to see how they react to the offseason workout program.  I will find out just how many believers there are....

The Evil Empire refers to how most other conference schools feel about Wartburg. From what I hear, there are even some Evil Empire t-shirts on campus at Waverly. I think instead of dismissing it,the Knights should embrace the image and have some fun with it.

(Here is where you can insert your Suckow and the Dark Side joke.)

So I encourage all the Wartburg faithful to join together and work for the success of the Evil Empire.

Thanks All for all the kind thoughts and prayers...

Things are turning around in favor of the humans.  Though the aftermath is pretty grim.

The aerial assault is on with Helo's and C-130's in the air and dropping water.  They couldn't fly yesterday due to the winds exceeding 100mph in some places.  Less wind today.

The wind has changed over my area and the house and cars are now covered in smoke and debris where yesterday we were still clear.

Schools are cancelled for the week.  They have not decided yet on Friday night HS football or SDSU on Saturday or the Chargers on Sunday.  Qualcomm Stadium (home to the SDSU Aztecs and Chargers) is an evacuation center temporary home to over 10,000 people.

Among the evacuees are Tony Gwynn, LaDainian Tomlinson and Iowa's own (and current SDSU Head Coach) Chuck Long...though I have no information that they are living at Qualcomm for the moment...yeah right.

For those of you that know the area, Coastal towns of Carlsbad and Oceanside have escaped untouched, Vista is clear...even Camp Pendelton, which burns regularly, is relatively untouched...not so for Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Fallbrook, Escondido, and Ramona.   Many homes burned in those towns.  The fire tried to sneak across through Ranco Santa Fe then up the coast at Leucadia but firefighters cut it off.  Big fire to the South but that seems to be in mostly canyon and brush...though it is still threatening near population centers.  L.A. area has problems of its own too.  Too much fire, not enough firefighters.

This is the biggest ever in the area.  We see fires all  the time in the hills and out in the wide open brush.  But this time it made its way into heavy suburban areas into the neighborhoods.

Fair enough, just wondered where it came from. I guess I never saw Wartburg that way since I spent my years at Central ;)

Point taken, Heys, but you must admit the Black Knight kept fighting and never quit. Is that a bad thing? Did I say that? Naughty Zoot!

I'm gonna pretend the last 5 weeks didn't happen...didn't W-H say there was no associative property in football...or was it the distributive property?  No matter...

Rams figure to start the freshman QB Bush again.  No doubt he's a superior athlete, he's got his first collegiate start under his belt and maybe he learned from his mistakes last week.

Rams have a better-than-their-record-indicates offense at the skill positions.  Thompson, Hardman in the backfield, Wideouts Krogman (Kudos to Krogman BTW), Youngblood and TE Macey are very capable receivers.  It comes down to the O-Line and the QB at the trigger.  Can we run enough to set up the pass and can we pass effectively when needed?

My feeling on the Ram offense is that somewhere after the third game we started trying to force the ball downfield and it just wasn't playing to our strength.  We have big receivers and my belief  is we need to work underneath and take the 6-7 yards gains on short routes and mix in the run to slow down the blitzes.

Teams know we are going to run it with the Wing -T and they put 8 men in the box accordingly.  Hard to put too much blame on an overtaxed O-line in that setup.  With 8 in the box that means 1:1 on the outside, with the DB typically 5-7 yards off.  Take the quick drop and throw the short route.

I may be a bit out of place throwing my two cents in...but we're better than the last three weeks have showed.

Defensively...I dunno...I am an old Offensive Coordinator by trade...we need to tackle and wrap...seems to be too many yards after initial contact.  It's easy to say, just gotta do.

This week with Connell and Schuring and a very confident Central offense.  We gotta do something to knock them down a peg.  It's gonna be hard.
