Willis's policy was "abuse bring's restraint"

I remember one time when a couple of guys got busted for underage drinking from the RA's.  They spent the whole practice running laps and at the end of practice the coaches brought the rest of the team over for some up-downs.  Start moving those feet and hit the ground when the whistle blew....keep going until the coaches say stop.  Pretty sure we hit triple digits that day for up-downs....of course this was all the players who had NOT gotten in trouble, which definitely helped give the whole team incentive to remind each other to shape up cause if a couple mess up we all end up suffering in the end.

Whats with the evil empire business?

Some other Wartburg alum can correct me if I'm wrong, but the "Evil Empire" was actually an intramural team that started a few years back.  Pretty much it was a group of the best athletes and students that got together and would compete in sports on campus (one's they weren't competing in NCAA-wise) and they ended up winning the majority of the intramural "championships".  It was passed down over the years and younger students would take over.  I'm pretty sure they even had "GMs" and such to kind of complete the whole idea.  They made shirts as well for the teams to where (whether it was basketball, volleyball, softball, etc.)  I remember there being an article in the student newspaper about it....I will go back and try to find it when I have more time.

It may now be a term used around the conference to refer to Wartburg...not really sure, maybe someone else has some added insight.

That makes sense...I guess I had never heard it till now. If Wartburg is the Evil Empire...what is Central? :)

I've also heard some posters on here describe Wartburg as the Evil Empire.Probably having more to do with the amount of money spent on the "W" and other things. Kind of like the Yankees and Red Sox.

Uh oh, here comes the ole Wartburg selling junk bonds talk again.

Evil Empire goes beyond football.  See men's all-sports conference trophy winners from 1997-present AND see the IIAC all-sports championship trophy winners since the trophy's inception.  I think it actually goes back around the 2002-2003 season where the women won or shared 5 conference titles and took 2nd in 2 others (7/9 sports in top 2) and the men won or shared 6 conference titles and took 2nd in 2 others (8/10 sports in top 2).

And yes... I have heard Wartburg referred to as the Evil Empire from all around the conference... not just within the WB community.

And that puts Central in the rearview mirror when it comes to a sports program as a whole.
The only thing capable of cutting Chuck Norris is Chuck Norris...

It also could've gotten really rolling when the men DOMINATED the 04/05 sports year.  8/10 sports as conference champs plus a 2nd and a 4th.  Can anyone on this board argue with the body of work that Wartburg has put together for at LEAST a men's athletic program for the last decade?

As an ex-football player Im more concerned with that than most other sports...although I am a baseball supporter as well...although I will concede wrestling to Wartburg :)

Evil Empire...

I attended the Wart from 1977-1981. (Two football Roomates.)

No evil empire back then (at least from Wartburg)... teams you could be proud of, but it was post Levick (at least the championship version of Levick), and pre-football success.

I suppose Central was the EE back then... but it was mixed in different sports.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the current Wartburg EE, and have been able to watch them play in Oregon twice as a result... but the reality is that each of these young men and women from all the IIAC schools, and their roomates, friends, girlfriends, and parents, experience the ecstacy and agony of DIII sports.  One of my classmates from Ballard High School just south of Ames has a daughter (freshman) that is an excellent Tennis player...   I love watching her progress.

Looking back, my respect for the people in DIII schools that participate in all extra-curricular activities (sports, music, drama, media...) grows, as does the benefit of an education from these schools.

Evil Empire... I think not.  The IIAC has a lot to be proud of - each school.

I have posted before that schools like Linfield, Willamette, Pacific Lutheran etc. have an advantage in athletics... and from a purely demographic perspective they do.  But from a service perspective, I'll take the IIAC any day.

OK... re-reading that message sounded a little to sugary...

Love to have the Knights back out here this fall! (or better yet, playing a NWC team in Waverly again)!

Go Knights!

Wartburg can have the evil empire, most references are to a fictional empire.

28 IIAC Championships
18 Division III Playoff Appearances

That makes the Dutch the New York Yankees of the IIAC.  (And I dispise the Yanks, but aren't they at roughly 26 World Series rings).  Or better yet, Pella could be TitleTown if your a Packer Fan, with Connell playing a little Favre-like this year that fits better.  either way those are not fictional references, the Dutch are for real.  Saturday they make it 29 IIAC championships as they clinch a tie.
61 consecutive seasons without a losing season
IIAC/ARC champs 39, 45, 46, 56, 64, 65, 66, 67, 74, 77, 78, 81, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 89, 90, 92, 94, 95, 98, 00, 01, 02, 05, 06, 07, 09, 19, 21
NCAA Playoffs 74, 77, 78, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 92, 94, 95, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 05, 06, 07, 09, 19, 21
