Old Dutch

As far as drinking rules and watering holes go, we always felt Schip knew exactly what we were doing every weekend.   The only rule expressed was that "certain establishments downtown did not need our business"  'nuf said.

Don't know where that Depot was but there was this place called the Grill which has since been replaced by the glockenschpiel or some Dutch tourist trap.  It was said to have been the oldest continuous Budweiser bar west of the Mississippi and did it get crowded the first weekend in November!

Wartburg can have the evil empire, most references are to a fictional empire.

28 IIAC Championships
18 Division III Playoff Appearances

That makes the Dutch the New York Yankees of the IIAC.  (And I dispise the Yanks, but aren't they at roughly 26 World Series rings).  Or better yet, Pella could be TitleTown if your a Packer Fan, with Connell playing a little Favre-like this year that fits better.  either way those are not fictional references, the Dutch are for real.  Saturday they make it 29 IIAC championships as they clinch a tie.

Got news for you Old Dutch... If Wartburg wins out, we are conference champs-Outright. No ties here.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Old Dutch

oops, I keep getting confused by that 1 in your loss column.   My bad, too many nights at the Grill.

I see Augie is up to a 2 win season, that'll help our opponents opponents winning percentage.   ;)

No excuses for the Auggie loss. I'm an ISU fan and I don't even know a way to spin it.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

So I got some more information about Coe from Saturday. This crap is unbelievable. If your coach has more class on his ring finger than our program, maybe he should try passing some of that along to a woman who is VERY close to their program yelling f-bombs at the game manager as he was escorting Coe to their lockerroom at halftime on Saturday.
Can't blame Suckow for wanting to get away from that.

Ya, thats why they don't play the game on paper, the guys need to perform on the field.  We're all cheering for Auggie now!

Don't know what good it does to cut down each other's fans on the board, we probably all have some we'd rather not be associated with.

I will set the record straight with how the Evil Empire started since my roommates and myself were the ones who started it.  We did it as a way to sort of protest since we werent happy with the fact that we were getting kicked out of the dorms for having a little to much fun.

We took it to the next level with having that be our IM team name for the next two years and creating officers.  We had GM and a talent scout the whole bit....had a bit of a dyansty going winning or getting second in just about every IM sport.  We then sold another batch of shirts our senior year for HC and had everyone wear them to the game that had them.  We passed the EE down to another group of guys and after that I dont know what happened to IM Evil Empire but I think it is funny that Wartburg athletics has been tagged as the Evil Empire.

So I hope that clears that up.

Here is an article that was in the Wartburg Trumpet about the EE

I always figured an Empire had to be dominant for more than a few years!! :) I dont think cheering for Augie does anyone good except for maybe Augie. Wartburg doesnt win out and the committee would most likely take a 2 loss team from the MIAC or WIAC over the Knights. Although I guess they have to get through Simpson first!!

As well as the Dutch have to handle Cornell this weekend! I am confident in saying that the only Dutch looking ahead are us has beens on this board...Coach Mac has the team concentrating squarely on the Rams!

WartTrainer,
Thanks for setting the record straight.I hope associating the current program with the Evil Empire meets with your approval. But watching the black wave leave the tunnel of the W for the field definetly brings to mind the Darth Vader marching music.

NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

I couldn't even see what happened, all I know is that the result of the play would have made it 4 &15. That hurt bad.

I agree...that was a huge turn of events.  Extended the drive and led to a touchdown.  It looked like UD d-back thought he had a pick and spiked the ball in frustration with either himself or the official.  Nothing flagrant but as high as the ball bounced, I don't think the ref had any choice but to pull the flag.  Any idea of who instigated the second flag from the UD sideline?  I know the coach was out on the field a ways, but it could have been a comment from anywhere over there.

It was great being able to watch all 3 OT's up close from those bleachers, though.  I enjoy the fields where the crowd has the option to get right down by the field.  As much as Coe's playing surface needs work (which sounds like is in the works), it's great to walk the sidelines and watch the game up-close.  Love the field at Central, but I'd like to see bleachers right behind either goalpost.  I think the track/fence detaches the players and fans from each other.  UW-W has a great atmosphere with both the home and visitor fans right on top of the field.

Walston, this is the last I'm going to comment on last week's game. I only know what I saw with my own eyes, and that was Coach Raeburn going out of his way to congratulate Nick Weber for a fine game. I wasn't close enough to hear what was said, but I'm certain Raeburn wasn't offering summer work roofing his house.  ;D I didn't see either of the two other instances you referenced. Not saying they did or didn't happen, just that I have no direct knowledge of them.

Airborne Dutch

Echoing what DutchHawk said about the drinking, it was just an unwritten rule. When the freshman first came in, the seniors sat down and had a talk outlining what the standards were and that was the first thing talked about. Once the guys were in the program for a bit they understood and drank the kool aid.

What to call the Dutch? There were T-shirts made a few years ago that said Dutch Nation. Thats not very imposing, but there is the Red Sox Nation and Husker Nation  :-\ . Old Dutch, when the Grill was still around it used to be a popular place for a short lived "social club" named TKB (Tappa Kegga Brew). My dad has told me stories about the place and laments the fact that it is not around anymore. If you go into the building now it is a Dutch embroidery store but if you look on the walls you can see engravings of people's names. My mom used to do the engravings for a dollar.
