I got word of it 2 days ago. There are some troubling undertones to it, not for the fact that a small town "uncultured" guy called a young man of a different persuasion a name, but moreso that he can be arrested for it.
Not condoning what he did at all, in fact I think it was quite offensive and, for all intents and purposes, stupid.
But with laws in place now, namecalling can get you arrested.
These laws going through are going to have huge ramifications, and Iowa is on the "leading" front.
I've been told that one of the next steps is to make it illegal for pastors to preach against homosexuality because it is "hate speech."

let me say as a coach myself that I would have a tough time benching a kid for namecalling.

If this had happened at another IIAC school to one of their best players...you guys (WB) would be all over it regardless of what the offense was, dont pretend you wouldnt be!!

Dont get me wrong I think its a little shady that you can be arrested for name calling, but in todays world, and as a standout student on campus, people know you and will take shots at you for even the smallest thing.

speaking for my pass profession in todays culture name calling can get you into trouble. But Disorderly conduct is A simple Misdemeanor, which results in a $50 fine plus court cost.   I do believe like it was posted earlier that any Football Coach will wait and see what the out come is in court, remember innocent unit proven guilty. Like W.H I don't aprove if it happen.

Ya I don't think name calling what ever the name including the famous "N" word is still free speech under the constitution.  If that is all it is I would say the the Waverly police or Wartburg College has gone very PC.  I don't think it is a good thing to do and can be hurtful but to have the police involved for that does seem to be extreme.

With the Iowa legislature, in all its wisdom, making harrasment and bullying illegal, all school adminstrators across the state are struggling with the question of defining harassment.  When does it cross the line?  Last year, I agree its name calling and he plays, most everywhere.  This year, we'll see.

Without knowing any details on the situation, I'd have to guess that in order for the authorities to get involved, it almost had to be a re-occuring thing.  If it was a one time deal, issue an apology and move on.

I'm with Walston, if it was one of my guys (and it was a one time deal), I'd have a tough time benching him.  However, he'd get to spend a little quality time after practice improving his endurance...

So is it true I hear Cornell had one queen and two kings for homecoming, and only one of them was a male!  Maybe they are the Grinnell of the Iowa Conference (talking politics here, not sexual orientation!)

It amazes me that so many people have an opinion about the Coe\Wartburg feud that have no idea what has gone on.  I can tell you some facts:

Suckow appeared on campus the week before camp started, filled out a transfer form and left.

He nor his parents EVER returned a single phone call placed by anyone connected with Coe.

Those included roommates, teammates, and coaches (one of whom was his HS coach, one of whom was his HS and Coe teammate)

He had not spoken to anyone until he appeared at our locker room entrance last week after the game in his Wartburg uniform, with his Dad, to say "Hi"

Blog his name and find the Scout.com site in Utah to see what the kid who grew up with him says (translate - appease the girlfriend)

He and the Wartbury coach has screwed him out of any admission to All Conference, Hall of Fame Etc. honors for the rest of his life (classy)

He may have stepped off the field a better football player than some on Saturday, but my son stepped off a better man.

Yawn...we've covered all of these "facts" back in August...

It should not be okay with any classy or informed adult or fan in the conference.  You must never have been an athlete to speak of

I have a hard time believing things like this don't happen at other IIAC schools. I just think no one makes a big deal out of it.
I'm just curious here...Is the story that he was arrested, or the story that he was arrested and got to play?
I'm not a law guy myself, but it sounds like this charge is even less than a Minor in Possesion. Can anyone comment on that.
He called a kid a name during "come out of the closet" week.

By the way, if Suckow wasn't happy playing at Coe for any reason, I doubt he cares much about being in the Coe Hall of Fame.

Welcome to the board dktkkh. Your input is long overdue... and unfortunately a bit late. We're moving on to current events. I'm quite anxious to see all the thick-skinned Warts "take it in stride."
