The thing that is impressive about the Dutch is the consistency of effort.  The 11 guys on the field invariably all do their job and finish plays.

My read on Cornell is that at any given point 1 or 2 guys breakdown...not the same guy...but 1 or 2 is enough so that the play fails.  Breakdown at the wrong time on a play and the drive fails.

When things come together as they did for a time in the second quarter, the Rams are physically capable of competing at a high level.

They have shown this in the 1st half against Loras and in the 2nd half against Luther.

Their problem seems to be when the offense has it going, the defense isn't holding up and when the defense makes plays, the offense isn't capitalizing.

Whatever methods McMartin uses to build team cohesiveness are methods that would serve Cornell very well.

Unranked Cal Lutheran (with 2nd string QB) pounds Occidental 43-19.  At Oxy.

Wonder what the ramifications to our #1 and #2 might be.

Looks like the SCIAC's chances at 2 entries are reduced though...

I would like to sincerly apologise to anyone that I offended with my earlier use of the word "war".I just assumed that since car dealers "declare war on high prices",arena football is a "fifty yard indoor war",and convenience stores have a "gas war", that my reference to the back and forth comments between Central and Wartburg supporters as a "war" would be acceptible.I hope that you chastise these other users of the word the same as you have me.Be assured that I pray for the safe return of all our personnel in harm's way,the sooner the better.Mea Culpa.

In reference to the Wartburg-simpson game:

A dominating performance by the Knights for the second week in a row.
Now that Suckow seems comfortable with the scheme, his play has elevated to a new level.
Yordi gets over being sick and has a simply outstanding day.although most of his completeions were quick outs and bubble screens,he threw some excellent downfield balls.
Simpson attempted some trickeration, and for the most part the defense was up to the challenge.Once they adjusted,it was another dominating performance, again not allowing a touchdown.
It must be the weekend for questionable official's performance, although they kept their flags in their pockets mor as the game went along.
The Knights definetly did not overlook Simpson, and I bet they won't overlook Cornell either.

Long live the Evil Empire!

Speaking of curious officiating: first Luther and then Coe was issued a sideline warning in the first half. I've never seen that before and it didn't seem like either team was any closer to the sideline than ever. It was like this crew worked Coe's new field for the first time, saw the lines in their pregame walk-through and decided to make that -- of all things -- their point of emphasis.

We chose Wartburg in a large part for the honesty we were treated with.
Not to pile on, but this might be the first time "Wartburg" and "honesty" were ever used in the same sentence in regards to recruiting.

CK:

Does Coe have one of those fields with soccer lines?  Perhaps this was the first time the officials had worked this field and they just wanted to be sure everyone knew where the correct lines were.

Yes, but if that's the explanation, the officials didn't know the correct lines themselves. Soccer fields are wider than football fields.

CK: Go ahead and pile on.  I know you hate Wartburg because we're all so beautiful.  After a period of time most Wartburg fans just learn to live with people being jealous of us.  :-*

Charlie, the guy that threw the first flag against Luther, dropped it at Heftys feet. I heard Hefty say, I can't believe you didn't just say something, instead of blowing the whistle and stopping the game. I suppose they felt obligated to do the same for Coe.
As to the game, I got about what I expected from the Norse offence and Coe defense. Unfortunately, I got more Coe offence and less Norse defense than I had hoped for. Once Coe took the lead in the third quarter, they did a great job of playing with the lead. They made the plays when they had to and kept Luther bottled up in the shadow of their own end zone. Coe won the field position battle all day. I think their average starting field position for the game was about four yards shy of mid field. If not for the two blocked field goals and missed chip shot this game would have been decided much earlier.
All in all, a pretty entertaining, hard hitting game on another glorious fall day.

Jealous? I don't know about that. I do admire Wartburg and respect its athletic success. But I don't envy the Knights. Central is probably the only school I envy, because they seem to do things the right way. Their coach always has something positive to say about the opposition. I like that.

Not to interupt any mine is bigger than yours business, but I see the WIAC is also helping our chances of getting two into the post season. They now have two loss teams in 2nd place who play head to head next week. One would expect that Central is now in.

Kind of curious and want another opinion from someone who was at the Central/Cornell game today. Would you say that was an easy 40-14 win for the Dutch? I was just wondering because I was reading some of the posts on the pickems board and many of the predictions were dutch 30-13 easy win, but in all honesty I would say that was a hard fought 40-14 win today. Sounds kind of dumb because hell the score was 40-14 but I guess if you were there you would know what I mean. I do think however that with about 10 minutes to go in the 4th Central had completely worn down the Ram defense and probably could have scored more but who knows. Anyway just curious as to what some of you other people that were at the game thought.

I was in the stands for part of the game and sitting and runnings around in the endzone with my boys part of the game.  I would say that it looked like a blowout early.  Then the Rams tightened things up  made some plays and were in it into the 3rd qtr.  In my opinion that maybe got the attention back of the Central players.  They aren't used to blow out games.  Cornell did a good job of shutting down the run but so has every one else this year.  Central O line just can't seem to block a run play consistantly.  Most of the 4th was Freshman time.  McMartin did a great job in taking Senoirs out 1 at a time in the 4th to give them their recognition.

Ash Park;  I guess I didn't see it hard fought. Cornell made some nervous moments to be sure, but it seemed whenver things got close the Dutch picked up the intensity and responded.

IMO:  the first drive was very easy, looked like we had found a weak spot at CB.  From that point on I didn't get the impression of any real urgency on the Dutch sideline.  After a couple blown coverages led to the 19-14 score I expcected a bit of an ars chewing be DeWaard, but didn't see it.

Connell had another great game stats-wise, but I don't think we saw anything close to his top game.  The dropped, bouncing or wild snaps sure didn't help.  Schuring appeared to be back in form, but we are concerned withthe lack of holes to pop him through from the Rhinos.

I'd agree the Cornell skill positions, esp. QB appear to be in good shape, Gustafson's a gool LB, will be hard to replace.  They were also successfull with the FB although I'd say thats a defensive weakness for the Dutch and solid ball carrying, nothing exceptional for the Rams.

I'd also have to say the apparent successor to Connell looked very promising in the 4th QTR.

Old Dutch - touchy aren't we ? How do you know what I was going to say or would of said.

Again good luck to everyone today

Ummm . . . not really.  Please share your thoughts.  My point was since your moniker has the W in it, I assume its because your visit to Waverly was better than your visit to Pella.  Ditto for my experiences to the contrary.  Go Dutch
