My old hometown made it for the second straight year, but the coach is an idiot. So unfortunately, I don't care if they win or lose. Just a few years back, his teams didn't win a game for almost 3 years (longest active losing streak in the state at the time)...now he walks around like he's the next Vince Lombardi. I think I might head out to the SEP/East game.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

The team I coach at did not make the playoffs, though we had a tough district with IC Regina, West Branch and Pekin.  Those were our only losses and they were all ranked in the top 10 when we played them.  I might be going up to Regina Wed to watch their game.  They are talented.

My 2 cents on the Central recruiting issue.  Coach Kac was there when I graduated high school and he knew our coaches and players well (I went to Grinnell and of course our huge rival is Pella.)  I really like and respected their coaching staff and tradition and my final two choices were Cornell and Central.  Central of course had almost twice as many players on the roster as Cornell and the Rams just finished off a 7-3 season.  I thought I had a better chance to play earlier at Cornell along with my interest in the OCAAT at Cornell.  I never got the weird vibe at Central, just that they were dedicated to winning.

Willie U,
Hey dog, you are definitely making a generalization of Loras.  I played football and graduated from Loras, and i had no issue with cats from UD.  I've worked closely with 2 UD grads, and aside from the joking around, we never had any problems.  There were also a lot of guys that i played with that hung out with players from UD as well.  I mean we all respected the rivalry, but when we were done playing we left it on the field.  and as far as sportsmanship goes, be realistic, there are some bad sports on both sidelines.  I remember last year there was damn near a brawl on the 50 yard line, and i saw just as many spartans as I did Duhawks rush on the field.
It's a rivalry, and things definitely get heated, but both colleges have good players and good fans.  Don't generalize just because of a few folks .

Another note from the "For What It's Worth" department.

Since I live in west Michigan, I follow Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) football (Hope, Olivet, Albion, etc.) which doesn't hold a candle to the IIAC ... either in quality of football  or quality and quantity of postings.  Examples ... in inter-Conference play, Central beat Hope 36-17 and UD beat Wisconsin Lutheran 63-3.   The MIAA has 135 postings on Post Patterns ... the IIAC has 545 at last count.

Keep up the good work.

Go Spartans.

Our team got knocked out of the playoff hunt in week 8. Solon and Tipton are very good. Our other loss this year was to Starmont; and A-P found out how good they were in week 9.

Show--looks like I'll be driving to Carrol on Wed. to help my good friend Penner again. Good luck at Hampton.

Thanks, hopefully you'll be making the trip over to Jefferson for the 2nd round. From what I've heard Roland-Story is pretty physical, but I think they'll have a tough time moving the ball against Kuemper's "D".

I have a question.  Regarding pool C berths for the playoffs.  Could you see a scenario where an 8-2 7-1 in conference play Wartburg would stay home from the playoffs and an 8-2 6-2 in conference play Dubuque make it into the playoffs???

I am not advocating that, even though I am a Dubuque fan.  But you see in the polls often when a team loses early and then wins out and then you have a team that loses late in the season, even if they had beaten the other team that other team ends up with a higher ranking.

I'll try and elaborate on the "weird vibe" at Central.

Obviously, when you are at an institution for a visit, everyone tries to put the place in the best possible light. This is only natural, and goes on everywhere. But on our visits to Central, when you ask about campus life, you get what is like the same conditioned response. It's really hard to put into words, but several other people I have talked too agree on the feeling. It's kind of like "We are all perfect here.Everything is perfect here. Please leave us your childern. We'll take care of them better than you can."We were very excited about the football prospects, and were impressed with the football staff, but the administration is where we had the problems. The president of the college addressed us with a techno-buzzword infused speech that had me pulling out the dictionary when I got home.No one would give us an honest opinion, just the well rehearsed company line.It all left us feeling, for lack of a better term,"creeped out".Couple that with a little bit of holier-than -thou and you can kind of see how I feel.It appears I'm not the only poster who feels the same way.

Central is probably the only school I envy, because they seem to do things the right way. Their coach always has something positive to say about the opposition. I like that.

Thanks for the quote Charlie, because I guess its the only way I can figure to explain the "cult-like" and "creepy" support that exists for Central's squad.  True, I too have my red shades on, but if people knew  Coach Schipper, the architect of the program, they would know he was the kind of guy to build that kind of loyalty.  Since most of the current coaches played for or worked with him, its an honor to say the program continues his tradition of excellence.

Having been recruited in the 1970s and a fan ever sense, I guess you can write this off as a member of the cult's mad ramblings.  Proud to Be Dutch!  Soon to be 29 championships and 19 playoff appearances!

I talked with Coach Schipper in person during recruiting about 4-5 times and thought he was a good man and a great football coach.  I still have a clear memory of when he visited my house, and that is getting closer to 20 years ago.

I don't have red-shaded glasses on (Go Norse!), and I never remember anything but a great football program and a good academic school when I was looking at Central.  It is also a nice town, but it is more conservative than some potential college students are looking for.

I have said on here before that Central Football is also the program that I respect the most among the conference opposition.  In many conferences the opposition dislikes the perennial champion the most, but Central has been able to be the king of the league in football and do it in a way that doesn't create as many enemies as continuous winning usually creates.

Before Wartburg posters think that this is just another way a Luther guy is trying to stick it to the Knight program, I have to say that I really thought Don Canfield was a solid guy in Waverly at the time.  He left to take over the Ole program in Northfield and I knew nothing about the next Knight coach.  The Knight players I met back then were not as solid as the Dutch players I met during recruitment, but I did like some of the guys on the Wartburg Baseball team.

Footballdaddy,
-k for that.  I have known President Roe for 5 years now.  There is not a more kind or good man at any institution.  I really like and respect President Ohle (spelling) at Wartburg as well.  President Roe is a former General in the Air Force and has a great sense of pride and duty. He is also proud of his college.  I feel the same about President Ohle at Wartburg.  He really loves that school.  Having had two sons one each attend Central and Wartburg I have found that what you have said applys at both schools.  The people you talk with at both schools show the best possible side of that school.   Your attempts at explaining the vibe continually smack of attacks.  I think that your "vibe" is totally subjective.  I don't know how many ways you can say you don't like Central but I think we all have gotten the message LOUD AND CLEAR.

Congrats to Coe for the win over the Norse on Saturday.  One of the two Norse tackles was trying to play injured when maybe they should have thought about working someone else in at that spot (at least part of the time), but in general I thought the speed and athleticism of the Coe DL was one of the two main differences in the game.

TeKippe played very well overall and made some throws.  One of the Coe fans I talked to thought that it was his best performance of the year.  Only Connell played better at the QB position against the Norse so far this year.  The St. Olaf QB may have put up better numbers than TeKippe, but the Oles have better weapons at WR.

Given the Coe performance against the Norse tackles, I was a bit surprised that they didn't run Lamos more right at the Coe Defense.  Sherden played well with 40 carries for 161 yards, but that is a ton of carries and Lamos had 4 carries for 28 yards.

Congrats to the Luther Men's and Women's Cross Country teams for sweeping the Iowa Conference meet for the 2nd straight year on Saturday.  It is now the 29th title (1959 was the first men's conference meet) for Luther on the men's side and the women have won it 11 times (1982 was the first women's meet).  Both totals lead the IIAC schools in the sport.

Congrats also to the Coe Women's Tennis Team for winning the IIAC title again this year.  They have now won it twice, Cornell won it in 2001, and Luther won it the other 23 times.

Now back to football!

those Norse really did well so far.  Congrats to them.  Football is a rugged sport but having worked at HS cross country meets and seeing some of those runners come in at the finish line I can not believe the stamina that it takes to run that far.  A big congrats goes to the cross country teams.

Aren't you forgetting about another loss.  I'm thinking particularly about the one that ruined your homecoming...

You are correct, it was an unfair generalization. In fact, just for the record and I think I put this on record a few times in years past, I have some good friends AND an immediate family member (to my dismay  ;D ) that are loras alums. They know my opinions and we are still friends and family. My experiences growing up in Dubuque, as a UD student and player, and as a loyal fan ever since has not been favorable when it comes to the Duhawks. Not just your normal rivalry type stuff but just plain ignorance on the part of "some". To be honest, I think most, if not all, probably stemmed from the infamous "Bob Bierie" and his "friday night before the UD game speeches". But mostly, he brainwashed an entire institution into thinking they were "better" and not just at football. If any sport lost to UD, you certainly didn't want to see Bierie the next day. But, he would not only want to win but he used negative recruiting tactics and whenever he spoke about UD, it was always negative or putting UD down. All because UD used to beat him when he was in college. Oh, and I forgot he said they used to throw fruit and vegetables, etc at him as well. His personal vendetta was probably what turned a normal "rivalry" into a hate match over the years.

Oh well, Bierie is history and I suppose I need to leave all that behind as well. I assume over the upcoming years when he becomes more and more a thing of the past and new people cycle through the institution, it will become a more sportsmanlike rivalry.
