With an offensive player, stats go a long ways in telling the story. With a defensive player, there's a lot of different factors that go into telling the story.

Breitbach is not as good as Weber, I'm confident any IIAC coach would agree with me. You can look at all the stats you want, but they won't tell the story.

I agree, when looking at who should be MVP you should throw out the stats.

It really should be about feelings, how coaches feel about the player.  You know, who would be the best player on a fictional All-Conference team that would play their games in a vacuum.  Their opposition would possess the same level of talent at each position.  Who ever that guy would be, that is your MVP.  Coaches shouldn't bother looking at stats because they know talent, that is their job.  What happens on the field during the course of the season only muddies the water when looking at how one feels about the players talent.  In fact, we should announce the MVP at the start of the season in order to celebrate his accomplishment all season long.
::)

I have no idea why this is such a difficult concept for you to comprehend.
THIS IS...OUR HOUSE!  WHOSE HOUSE?!...OUR HOUSE!  WE RULE....OUR HOUSE!!

Going to need nominations from BV, Coe, Cornell, UD, and Loras (They aren't well represented here on the board so if no one nominates I'll throw a couple names out).

Also need Simpson.

Great idea about doing the IIAC Poster All-Conference team Walston...+K for you.

Breitbach vs. Weber--to me, this is a pointless debate.  For a defensive player to win MVP, he has to be DOMINATING.  And any good OC will game-plan for players like Breitbach and Weber and will NOT attack them unless they have to.  So that makes it more difficult for them because they can't put up numbers for tackles, ints, etc if they aren't being attacked.  Since both of these guys play offense and defense, they have a better shot at MVP, but again, they need to be DOMINATING.  Charles Woodson won the Heisman because he could take over games offensively, defensively and on special teams.  I don't think either one of these guys can do that.  Factor in the stats the Connell, Jackson and Sherden are putting up and Weber and Breitbach become after thoughts in the MVP discussion.  They deserve to get mentioned and should get All-Conference honors, but neither one of them is the MVP of the league.

I was thinking-It would help me and all voters out if people send in a little info on each player. Please use conference only stats.

Hoover ... I wish I could give you some nominations for UD, but I only get to see them play ever couple of years.  I think I would be safe in nomination Jackson and Mashburn.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Concerning the discussions of COY and tangentially the topic of POY, I think that it might be interesting to hear from all posters the 5 top attributes of a successful coach.  This might also apply to POY.  As it seems that most of you have played D3 sports and some are coaching....the rest are at least immersed in Ia HS sports.  I never played college sports...traded j-strap for computers, a six-string revolver, and platform shoes....but played 11 yrs of baseball, 6 yrs of FB, 4 yrs of wrestling, and 3 yrs of track.  Over those years I had a few coaches that stood out, some that were good and a few that were nothing but trouble.  My sister has also coached for 30 yrs and I have witnessed first hand what happens to someone who creates a dynasty.  Both good and bad.  It seems that you all have thrown out what appear to be some of these attributtes.  Winning %, recruiting, assess talent, and motivation skills.  It might be interesting to hear how you would list those from top to bottom.  My opinion is that Connell get POY...I highly doubt that Central wins the Luther or DBQ game without him.  He just flat out can play and overcomes.  COY probably goes to Brautigam for the turn around he has possibly started...although it is easy to say he had a talent-plus year.  McMartin and Koehler have both done a great job, as expected, but regardless of the outcome of the Central/Wartberg game, if DBQ wins out then Brautigam get my vote.  My 5 Top attributes of a successful coach are:

1. Recruiting-This not only keeps numbers up but also perpetuates interest in the school
2. Assessing talent-might be the most important job of a coach.
3. Movtivation at an individual level-each player performing at his highest level.
4. Motivation at a team level-playing as a unit.
5. Winning %-if the above 4 are done properly and repeatedly winning comes natural.

Of course just my opinion from the outside and not as informed as players and coaches.

I have a feeling we will see the Loras guys back on here once basketball starts back up ;D

Top five things of a coach

Honesty and trustworthy- He does what he says he is going to do

Leader, Organizer- Motivates and comes up with a game plan to win

Respectful- of parents, players, fans, officials an ambassador for the school

Results-team improvement, not just wins and losses has the team genuinely performed at or above their potenital

Role model-would you want your son or daughter to emulate that person

The all conference could take place of an evening when we can all lay out the case for each player after the vote.  Pick a night to post the information about the nominees and then have a dead line to send the votes in.  Instead of sending the info you to Walston if the info is posted here we can all take a look at it along with fans comments on why each should get the vote.  I would also consider the top two vote getters being 1st, and then runner up getting 2nd team just as in the IIAC.  I don't believe there is a 3rd team IIAC.

LOL, NO I don't play! I have been out of school for years. I said "we compete" because as an alum, I consider myself a part of the SImpson community. It's just my opinion. Half of the conversations on this board take place about speculating which teams are better than others. In two weeks we will see who is more dominate- I just happen to think it will be Wartburg. Or maybe you are right, maybe Central just played really bad the day they played Simpson.

Klop- I was mostly referring to the academic side of things at BV. They may have nice facilities, and I am sure you can get a decent job, but they are near the very bottom of the IIAC in terms of academic profile. They'd have you believe they are the Harvard of the Midwest when you visit- it just came across a little too strong- too forced to be believable, and my whole point is that now i see why- they are NOT considered in the strongest schools academically.

I agree their actual campus isn't bad at all. Your theory about kids just not wanting to visit campus,  doesn't explain their below average retention rates. Last I knew it was in the mid to high 70%'s. There is SOME merit in not wanting to go to a school in a town where great internships are much harder to come by. I agree that if you could transplant that campus and put it somewhere else, they'd see much better enrollment and retention- but you can't.

Storm,

I think the above link proves that BV is no where near the bottom of the IIAC academically.  I have a hard time understanding how you came to that conclusion.  Please provide some type of data as Beaverof Yore did to support our school.

Please tell me, besides simpson due to its close proximity to Des Moines, thrives in a town that you could get a great internship at.  Waverly are you interning at Joes, Storm Lake Malarkys, Central you could intern at the Dutch bakery, Loras and UD could intern at a mississippi river tourist spot, decorha at roscoes, cornell at i guess i dont know where, Coe at the Quaker Oats factory which might not be bad.  I mean come on all these school are in town of +/- 15K with the exception of Dubuque.

Show me a hand down better business and science department in the IIAC with proof and I will agree and move forward.  Take the virtual tour of the new science center at BV...with the new cadavar lab coming soon as well.  Let me know who else is sporting that.
