We never did find out the severity of his comments, and I doubt we will.  Was this a 1 time passing comment?, or part of a longer action directed at the other student, or part of a larger undertone promoted by athletes.....or specifically fb players......of which Yordi became the ideal candidate to scapegoat.  I know of at least 2 other IIAC campus's that have a similar prevailing attitude that actually affects the # of students that attend games or matches.  If it was a passing or one-time comment...a 1 game suspension should do it...along with whatever PC sensitive classes needed.  I think it would be a shame to keep Yordi out  of the Central game if it was just a one-time thing.  I would still pick Central to win but who knows.

Does Wartburg have any language in their student handbook regarding Sexual Harassment policies? If so, the campus judicial system should adhere with it in this instance (it seems.) His punishment (and non-participation) should be consistent to those standards, consistent to the treatment every other student on campus would receive.

I dont know DF1, W-h would know.  But I would assume that Wartburg is up to speed with Sexual Harrassment policies.  The real question may be the motivation behind taking action now.  Could it be?

1. Competitive reason?  1 game suspension.
2. To show a proactive postion to student body and pertinent student groups.
3. Legal and Policy position pertaining to the possible court date.  Protecting school from legal actions.

Everyone has said that Wartburg is committed as an institution to winning. If this is a one game suspension isnt that pretty convenient timing!! Oh yea, we need to punish you so we dont look bad but we will wait a few weeks until we play Cornell...that way youll sit out one game and then be back for Central...haha

Again this is all just for thought...I dont think they said the length of suspension but it does seem kind of fishy with the timing and being "internal", since he hasnt been punished in court yet correct?

I know our society has become a suit happy one but I am not sure how the school can be sued over a kid playing football.  There are people out there that my indeed love to letigate this to move a social agenda but really how is the school monetarily held responsible.  The injured party would have to show how they were injured by the schools actions.  The school didn't say these things.

The conspiracy theories I think are nonsense in the fact that I believe in President Ohle and being a semi outsider (at least in the football world) to Wartburg I think I have a clear head on him.  I don't think President Ohle would care about the team's record or standing for the playoffs at the expense of the schools reputaion in handling matters pertaining to students.  I think he knows that a win or playoff spot is not worth damaging Wartburg in a larger sense.  IMO this is the reasoning behind this and not an attempt to curry favor by the suspension of a player for a "meaningless" game.

We will have to see what happens and how long the suspension is before the theories hold water IMO.  If it is a one game suspension then I may be all wet and if it is for the season then I think there must be a good reason for the suspension.  I trust President Ohle in his judgement on this matter and that it will serve Wartburg College as a whole.

Matt Macri:  Colorado Rockies SS minor leagues
Zack Dillion:  4 year started at catcher for Baylor drafted into MLB
Tim Heaston:  played at Drake
Chris Hollman: played at Drake
James Thompson: went to Princeton for football
Matt Schwen: went to play at UNO
Aaron Fangman: UNO I believe
Ryan Opp: UNI baseball
Tom Baldwin: VIM to play football
Drew Davidson: Illinois to play baseball

not relevent but:
i pitched my first varsity game as a freshman against that team, the day before the game was the article that mentioned 5 of them got drafted in the MLB draft.  it was a lesson learned.

Pitched against the same kids as well.  Point was that team had an insane level of talent.  Point was how much did the pure talent over ride the pure coaching and motivating that had be done.  But if you explain further how that was not relevent, I would be more than happy to read and understand.

I was just saying how i pitched against them wasnt relevent.. that it was off subject matter.  i know what you mean, any coach could have done a lot with that amount of talant.  and yes i did hang a few curve balls that ended up in the stands.

Before the inevitable -k shower from the Coe nation rains down upon me once again...I want them to know I do pick them once in a while.  (-3 at post time)

From the Pick 'ems
QuoteCoe over Loras:  Hawks, Ko beat Hawks, Du.  People not directly affiliated with the schools continue to wonder how anyone thought this naming scheme makes any sense.  On the football side the Ko's are simply better than the Du's.  Elsewhere Coe and Loras AD's propose to change the league name to the Iohawk league.  The Cenhawks, Warthawks, Cornhawks, Sparhawks, Beevhawks, Simhawks, and Luhawks vote in support.

RE: Yordi
The timing has nothing to do with the opponent this week. I can't share the details, but I can assure you that while it is not coincidence that he is suspended now, it has nothing to do with this week being Cornell week and more to do with other aspects that have come out very recently.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

doolittledog

I was thinking if the other student dropped out of class there had to be something to it that would eventually come out.

It will be interesting to see just how long this suspention ends up being.  The problem for Wartburg is the appearance of it all.  I don't doubt that Wartburg led an inquire and after getting the facts is now taking action.  But it just looks bad that it happends in the week leading up to Wartburg playing the team occupying last place in the standings.

It seems to me that the delay in the Yordi suspension case probably had something to do with the Admins taking the time to consider the facts of the case and come to a consensus.  It seems a couple of weeks is a reasonable amount of time for the process.

Institutions are perfectly within their rights to mete out disciplinary action beyond the legal system.  Ask Roger Goodell.  Even better example, kids may get expelled for unruly behavior whether or not any legal charge occurs.  One can only hope to expect that the admin does a fair review of the situation prior to action.

I agree with you about a sue-happy society and President Ohle, though I have no knowledge of him.  The timing issue seems to the question.  If this was an ongoing thing and the damaged student made complaints, even if they were not srongly supported until the actual event that got Yordi suspeneded, the school might be viewed as tacitly allowing that kind of behavior.  In that case the school could very well be liable.  If it was a 1 time deal then you have to at least ask the question why now and why before the court date.  Unfortunately, President Ohle has a tightrope to walk.
