but no town is perfect...well besides Waverly right?

Nothing like waking up early for a 2-a-day practice with the smell of the Nestle plant in the air.

I know Coe gets a lot of crap for being where it is located being the "ghetto" but it happens all over the place just no one hears about it around the conference.  I guess this is me backing up Coe???  At BV a couple of years ago there was 2 shootings, a stabbing and a murder, I believe 2/4 of those happened within 4-5 blocks of campus.  Not to mention all but one of those were drug related.  I know this is me talking about my own college but truthfully, it is not only Coe where this kind of stuff goes down.  BV is a great town, and in a good location but no town is perfect...well besides Waverly right?

I will echo these comments.  Look at Drake University.  I do think anyone will argue the academic reputation this school brings to the table.  The school is in the middle of a horrible part of Des Moines.  One of the more famous and talked about murders in Des Moines history took place a few block from campus.

Walston...Id rather have the Nestle plant to wake up to than our famous stench.  The packing house could make your stomach turn most mornings in the spring after morning conditioning.

I enjoyed my time in Decorah!  Waverly and Mount Vernon seem like nice towns as well.  I can't say that I have been in Pella, Storm Lake, or Indianola as much as the NE Iowa locations.

Mount Vernon and Waverly seem like more ideal situations than the Coe location in that the Rams and Knights are located in nice towns that are located very close to larger populations.  That way parents can send their kids off to college in a nice town in which the college is a huge part of the town, yet the college can recruit from the larger population near by and the college students can find things to do in the bigger city near by if the college town is not enough for them.

Like a lot of college kids I remember taking road trips on the weekend to places like LaCrosse, Cedar Falls, Iowa City, or even Waverly because somebody knew somebody or something was going on.  For the most part though I enjoyed spending a lot of my weekends finding things to do around Decorah.

The only school that I felt bad for the kids about the location and things to do was Upper Iowa.

Klop, I was serious. The smell of hot chocolate in the morning is heavenly!
As for IIAC towns
Pella-Very clean, you would think it is kind of close to Des Moines until you make that first trip down 163 and realize that is the longest hour you've spent in your life.
Dubuque-"Big" city feel, and both campuses (campi?) are very nice. Loras is Old and UD is new, but both have their place. No flat ground
Decorah-VERY nice. A bunch of penny-pinching, rich Norwegians (a lot of my relatives) settled in the "Mountains" of Iowa. Picturesque, but probably the farthest away from any bigger-town feel than any other school.
Indianola-as one of the kids at Dowling says--Its KKK country. Nice campus, but I always get a kick out of driving through town and seeing every store's weekly Skoal special. Its a no-fail
Storm Lake-Campus is nice, but driving to it makes me want to shower
Mt. Vernon-very old, reminds me of Loras a bit. Someone may have to correct me, but it seems like a very quiet town.
Coe-Being a small-town kid, I get nervous driving to Coe.
Waverly-I grew to love the town. Great facilities at the high school, and the town very much emraces the college. Lots of student specials at places in town from Joe's to the movie theatre.

Just looked on Simpson web site says the other QB is the starter this week , hope its wrong Dietz had a big day last week

The "probable starters" section isn't always updated each week in the press release.  I'm guessing that's the case here - carryover from last week.   Unkrich was probably listed last week since Dietz got hurt at Wartburg and his status wasn't known yet on Monday morning.  I saw Tubaugh was listed also and I don't recall seeing his name prior to last week.  I'll bet you could find out pretty easily if you really want to know....

I agree with doolittle.  Iowa beat Iowa St. what 16 years in a row, and have won like 6 of 8 since then.  Rivalries will go back and forth and sometimes teams will have long streaks of victories, look at Navy and Notre Dame.

Iowa won 15 in a row and ISU has now won 7 of the last 10.

I look for Coe to lay the wood against Cornell this week.  Great way for the seniors to go out in their last game at Clark Field.

Ok WH - I have to defend Indianola. Although I only lived there while attending SC, I think your "KKK country" statement is way off base. I would enjoy raising my family there. In my opinion, the school district is solid. Great teachers and very nice facilities. Athletically, almost every school they compete against is at least double their average class size. I think people tend to forget that. It's been a few years since they made the playoffs, probably Todd Bylthe's senior year. Basketball has made it to state a few times in recent years.

But the Skoal comment is probably on the mark.  :-\

I think everyone rags on Coe because of it's location, which as hard as Coe officials try, it is not that safe, or least the students don't feel safe.  I know b/c my girlfriend goes to Coe (PH and Ash don't hang me for treason  ;) ) and she tells me all the time about drug busts and police breaking up fights at the houses right across from campus.  That can't make people feel safe.

Yeah I believe I stated the same thing awhile back.

No worries Ramfan I'll let it slide. Are you going to be making the trip to CR this weekend?

W-H I agree with you on almost all of the towns. I really like the campus at BV but Im not a fan of Storm Lake. Sure the lake and everything is nice but the town itself in my opinion isn't very nice at all. I really like Mt. Vernon of course but Waverly and Decorah as well.

I grew up around Des Moines and have been to Indianola many times either to watch Simpson or the high school team.  Indianola gets a lot of people in town from their south towards the border of Missouri.  If you are on the Simpson campus it is a totaly different feel from the main drag where all of these "Skoal" deals are advertised.  If not having grown up so close to Simpson i would have loved to go there.  I wanted to stay in a bigger city and Coe was the only one offering one i liked.

Long time reader, first time poster haha... As a Central alum, I'll join in the discussion. Pella is definitely not a "college" town by any means. Of course it is a very nice community and is clean, safe etc... but not much fun as far as what a college student is looking for beyond the campus.

I've been following the Yordi events on here. Does anyone have an update on his status for Saturday?

WH... I'd have to say that Coe has that "home" feeling for me :)  Went to high school in essentially the same circumstances, so I don't feel nervous in the least bit.  I tutor kids on the other side of 1st Ave that are at-risk kids from that same neighborhood... and those kids are the real deal!!  It does your heart good to see such great kids coming out of such extreme living conditions.

Just like most campuses, there is an invisible barrier around institutions (especially in the IIAC) where there really aren't a whole lot of worries about crimes breaking the boundary of the campus itself.  That is a HUGE selling factor for IIAC schools... they either tend to be in smaller communities, or even if they are in larger communities, they have that "protective" boundary that makes them safe-havens, even if the campus is in a less-than-ideal location.  Even thought Wartburg was my choice, every campus in the IIAC feels safe and comfortable as far as I'm concerned... and that's the way it should be!!

I plan to celebrate Central's win on Saturday with a Dutch Masters cigar and some Heineken.

I now realize how the Central/Wartburg week impacts us in so many ways.  I  just returned from Hy-Vee where I had picked up a dutch apple pie for dessert tonight.  I thought about it for a couple seconds and decided German chocolate cake was probably more appropriate this week.

Anyone bringing some Jaarsma to the pre-game festivities on Saturday?  That's about the only freaky-deaky Dutch thing I look forward to from Pella :)
