If we're talking about visitor seating.  I'm just throwing it out there but the Coe athletic director needs to do something about the Coe visitor seating.  I have stood on the Coe sidelines during a game and it is quite annoying to have the other team's fans sitting right behind you, yelling when they dont like a call, or cheering when they intercept a ball.  I love the new field but could there possibly be more bleachers on the track on the visitor side or something.

From what I've seen,Wartburgs visitor bleachers are second only to Central's. (There, I said something nice about the Dutch.)

As far as seniors staying in the program, it's commendable to have that many stay. but how many were kept there with promises of playing tme when they became seniors? Part of Central's recruiting pitch is that you may have to wait your turn to play, but you should by the time you are a senior. I personnaly heard that from the staff. So how many of those seniors have put in four years only to have to wait for a blowout to get the playing time that was alluded to when they were recruited? If I wasn't good enought to play, I would appreciate being told that early in my career so I could make my decision about staying, quitting, or transferring.

I was never promised playing time my senior year but I worked hard to get it. I havent heard of people being promised playing time by McMartin. He does state the obvious, if you work hard and earn the spot you will play but I dont believe there is ever a carrot dangled in front of players just to get them to stay. Its a personal decision because of friendships and loyalty. You are entitled to your opinion however.

Alfrednewman - Im not denying Wartburgs wrestling dominance, I am a big wrestling fan myself (Go Hawks!!) I am proud, even as a loyal Dutch supporter, of Wartburgs success and the IIAC overall. However this is a football board and I was referring to Centrals football dynasty. Past 15 years, 9 IIAC Championships for the Dutch, 7 outright, 5 for Wartburg, 3 outright, 3 for Coe, 2 for Simpson. So almost half of the last 15 conference championships were won outright by the Dutch. I wouldnt necessarily call that falling off but until someone unseats us as the team to beat year in and out the Dynasty continues.

I was just pointing out what I think of when DYNASTY is mentioned.

Not counting this year over the past 5 years. Wartburg, Central and Coe have won or shared the title 3 times each.

Luther also leaves a lot to be desired for visitor seating too.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

As far as visiting side bleachers go.  I think Loras has a good idea.  Put visiting bleachers 50 feet up on top of a bluff.  Then if your team loses in OT you can just choose to end it all there by walking off the cliff ;D

And for the PC police out there.  I am not advocating suicide ;)

And I was talking football...we could narrow down the time frame as much as you would like but it ends up getting useless after a while. Central has shared or won 3 of the last five with 2 of their worst seasons in 40 some years, that says something as well.

I think when Central gets their whole stadium renovation finished it will be top of the league...when that will all happen is not clear to me at this point. I think what Wartburg is doing will continue to have impacts around the IIAC.

I would rank visitor seating Central, Wartburg, Simpson, Cornell, BV, Luther, Dubuque (until the renovation is finished), Coe, Loras. Im going on seating room mainly. I havent sat on many of these bleachers but just a random opinion.

Coe-Cornell trivia: the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi started in 1891 in a cow pasture with a creek running along the 50-yard line. Cows had to be driven off the field before the game could start. There have been only five years since when Coe and Cornell didn't not play each other - 1895, 1896, 1899 and during the war years of 1943 and 1944. The teams have played each other twice in 1900, 1902, 1903, 1918 and 1945.

DutchHawk,

There's always a carrot. Unless you're one of the few who start as a freshman there always is the carrtot of "If you lift, work hard, study, etc. you'll play, get more time, whatever" In D3 anyone can go out for a sport, and can stay out as long as he's not a detriment to the team. Wether he plays or not is a different story. But if someone is just not good enough to play.he should be told honestly so the player can make his own decision about his future. I may be old, but I'm not quite deaf. I know what I heard, and there are, if not promises, allusions to playing that some schools make while recruiting.

As I said,if a student stays out all four years after being honestly evaluated, and knowing that there may be no playing time at all, he should be commended for his efforts. Along with that, if a player reads the handwriting on the wall and quits or transferrs, he too should be commended for the effort he did put out.

I believe that cow pasture is the Cornell practice field/baseball outfield now. Of course the crick is gone.

Dynasty? While Central has been most successful football team for most of my lifetime, things have balanced out the past 15 years. Right now the conference dynasty is Wartburg Wrestling. 15 straight conf. titles and ZERO conference matches lost since Jim Miller has arrived.

Wrestling? What's this wrestling you speak of?   ???

Hey LC65 ...

I'm assuming your name means that maybe you were at LC the same time I was at UD.  I remember lots of well played, hard fought games between our two schools, though not always close.  One game in particular I remember took place in Decorah and UD beat Luther for the first time in several tries.  I was broadcasting that game for UD campus radio and still remember the winning touchdown pass as if it was yesterday.

As far as Saturday's Norsemen-Spartan clash ... I figure the UD senior class which has had such an impact on UD football these last few years will come to play.  It's their last college game and it is at home ... and they will have something to prove after the BV debacle.  The score could be as you predict, but with UD having the 31 points.

However it turns out ... good luck.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

DF2004, thanx for the info. KNIA isn't pulling up on my government monitored comp. so I'll catch everything via the boards. The tour is going well and starting to wind down somewhat. I'm located at a different FOB for a few weeks working with the Afghan Army while they conducting an operation. I start working my way home on leave right around Dec. 19, so I should be home for Christmas. Once I get back, I have about 10 more weeks in Afghanistan and then I return to the states to finally start jumping out of aircraft again.

On the bleacher issue, I think most places need some improvement, but I think the schools really only view it as a minor inconvenience. From an administrator POV, I see it this way: You have 5 regular season home games a year, each lasting about 3/4 hours. Numbers wise, how many people from the visiting are actually going to show up? For a Central squad that travels well, you could on as many 700-1000 for a big and relatively close (distance wise) like Simpson or Wartburg. Even an away game that requires some more time in the car like BV, Luther, or Dubuque/Loras you can still bank on 200-400 people. My numbers might be a bit inflated. Thing that I am getting at is that even though Central travels well, not every school does. So, if I was an administrator or official at a IIAC school that sees at most 2,500 visiting fans a year and has a sideline that gets used for a total of 15-20 hours out of the entire year, I'm not gonna get too spun up. As the fans, we may not like it, but its just the nature of the beast. At least there is plenty of standing room.

I got a little long winded, so a couple more thoughts. Regarding Coach McMartin and playing time, I never got the vibe that he promised time to anyone. I'm sure that he informed recruits of potential areas that there would be competition for a job, but it would be unlike him to tell a guy that he is guranteed a spot. One thing I have noticed is that you can be a real stud in high school, but once it comes to college, you can drop off. Works the other way, you can be a middle of the road player, but once you step on campus things can turn around completely.

On the game, I'll echo the sentiments and predict a fairly low scoring affair. I see it 17-13 Dutch come out on top. Could be a different story if Suckow and Yordi play, but its not just a one man game (unless your name is Darren McFadden). DutchHawk, here's to hoping the locker room mood is the same as it was two years ago!

Wartburg Fan

According to D3 and their projected playoff brackets . Wartburg has to win Saturday to get into the plays off. As of now Central is 3th in UWW bracket that assuming Cental wins. Betal makes the plays off in C pool and will probably play at Central. That D3 picks by Pat Coleman. Looks like Wartburg get no respect from D3 again this year. Don't get me wrong I know the Knights Sh_t in their own nest by losing to Augsburg.  Its just frustrating to see Betal get in when they lost to BV. ( BV fan don't get upset I'm not saying any thing bad about BV).

IIAC's lack of recent postseason success hurts the Knights if they lose and might keep Central out if they lose Saturday.  IIAC needs to start winning some games in the postseason, then the IIAC will earn some respect from Pat and others.
