According to D3 and their projected playoff brackets . Wartburg has to win Saturday to get into the plays off. As of now Central is 3th in UWW bracket that assuming Cental wins. Betal makes the plays off in C pool and will probably play at Central. That D3 picks by Pat Coleman. Looks like Wartburg get no respect from D3 again this year. Don't get me wrong I know the Knights Sh_t in their own nest by losing to Augsburg.  Its just frustrating to see Betal get in when they lost to BV. ( BV fan don't get upset I'm not saying any thing bad about BV).
IIAC's lack of recent postseason success hurts the Knights if they lose and might keep Central out if they lose Saturday.  IIAC needs to start winning some games in the postseason, then the IIAC will earn some respect from Pat and others.

Your right I should of said the IIAC get no respect

Wartburg fan,

I would agree with you that the loss that Bethel suffered at BV's hands is worse that Wartburg's loss to Augsburg.  D3 rates the MIAC a superior conference so when a contended losses a game to a middle of the road team from the opposing conference isn't the weaker conference more of an upset?

I understand what you are saying it still frustrating. Also sorry about the misspelling of Bethel.

I don't give or take karma for spelling.  We got what you meant.   ;D  I know it is frustrating but one thing don't count out for the Knights If there is some subjective reasoning or criteria used they may not follow Pat's picks as he has two flights from the far West.  We do know how the NCAA hates to spend money.  That makes Wartburg easier to send somewhere in the West to save some money.  Just my two cents so until we play the final games and see the results it is anyone's guess.

Believe me I'm not giving up on a victory Saturday by the Knights. All I do know for sure its going to be one H_ll of a game on Saturday. If I'm right from your name you probably played  my son.

As far as the carrot talk for playing time a page back, (sorry i didnt quote it, Im fitting this in between study breaks!) I think its one thing to promise playing time, starting tiem etc. Its another to say, yes, you will have the opportunity to COMPETE for a starting spot at any point in your career. We want you to be playing the best ball you can possibly play by the time your a senior. Coach Mac isnt going to tell a guy, your going to play, just to keep him at Central. Hes not that type of coach. He will tell that same player, that yes, bust your ass and you will compete for time on the field and hopefully make an impact. Thats the same at every school, not some gimmick to get players.

My point was that in August Wartburg posters always talk about haveing around 90 guys on campus. Central generally has 50, graduates around 20. If Wartburg has 90 4 years ago (Im assuming here since Willis was still around, hence no coaching change), why did the other 80 some odd guys quit?

Im looking forward to Saturday, its going to be a dogfight for sure!

I got your email but wasn't able to respond any way except on here.  I do remember Jo well ... she was in the same sorority as my roomie's gf/fiance/wife.

Those were the good old days us old farts like to talk about.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I don't know that 4 years ago there was 90 guys. Probably in the neighborhood of 60-70.
There's only so many spots on the field. If a young guy beats you out for a position as a jr or soph, your probably not going to stay around for 2-3 more years to be scout team fodder.
DutchHawk-
You bring up a great point about a recruit being told they "will have an a opportunity to compete for a starting spot. I know that's what recruits at Wartburg are told, and I know it happens. We had guys that beat out guys when they were freshmen, but then a couple years later get beat out themselves. That;s the beauty of competition.
I would wager to guess that guys waiting around until their Senior year at most colleges to start is the exception rather than the norm.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

After hanging around here for several years, I feel compelled to post for the first time.  First, I highly doubt anyone has been promised anything as an incoming recruit at Central for a long...long time.  Second...90 down to 9 at Wartburg in 4 years?  If that rate of attrition is true, with all due respect to the success Wartburg has had, that sends up some red flags for me if I'm looking at playing football there.

Thunderbolt

It's silly to think that Wartburg is going to have 360 players on their roster, after 4 years of bringing in 90 recruits. It's also silly to think that they won't glean more talent as time goes on. than a team that brings in 50. There isn't a coach in the country that doesn't want that problem. Recruiting 17 and 18 year old kids is a crap shoot. They mature at different ages, some are as good as they're ever going to be at 17, others don't start growing or maturing until they are 17. Say nothing of the pressures they face outside of football. No coach is going to tell a potential good athlete that he can't play in four years if he sticks to it and works hard, any more than a junior who is three deep on the depth chart, behind a sophmore and freshman doesn't understand where his place is.

I feel playing time at Central is earned through hard work, my son started Varsity sophmore year, only started 3 games in Jr. year and then only ran special plays for the rest of the year.  He could have caved and quit but didn't.  He found out what was needed and expected if he wanted to start his senior year.  He busted a.. and ended his sr. year as an All- American

They never pick teams that way. If they want to save money they will play Redlands and Cal Lu against each other again, not pick a team that performs lower in the criteria.

You guys can keep spinning the Bethel loss to BVU as being worse than Wartburg losing to Augsburg, but the fact remains that Bethel's loss was on the road and Wartburg's was at home. Common opponents are almost a wash: Bethel beat Augsburg on a neutral field and lost to BVU on the road, while Wartburg beat BVU at home and lost to Augsburg at home.

Again, exception, not the norm. Who was your son?
Playing time anywhere is earned through talent and hard work. There's not the politics involved in college ball that there is in HS ball.

Did you happen to be a Mu Sig???  I was in my time at UD many years later.  I remember Jo and her friends during their 25th reunion in '89 have a VERY good time.  I had always known her as a somewhat serious type so to see her having a good time at her reunion was fun to see.

And to tie this in to the IIAC.  Her parents are Central graduates with her dad playing basketball at Central in the 1930's.  He says Central was known as a basketball school back then but I have nothing to go on other than his word!!!

One would hope that is true every where. Your son is a fine example of what makes a good team great.
