Had to have been better than the mickey mouse crew they had in Indianola this afternoon.

I agree it was pretty bad - both ways.  I wouldn't say it made a difference in the game though.

I think you and Maurer should come back and run a clinic... is he allowed on campus yet??  ;D "Free Beer in the Endzone, Go Team Go!"
(Can you tell that it's been a slow work-day for me....I haven't posted this much all season....)
;D  Surprisingly slow here, too.  Maurer and I talk every fall about making a trip back for a game (he has sneaked onto campus since graduation .007-style), but it never comes to fruition.  We're just going to have to bite the bullet and plan a trip one of these days.  I seriously wasn't counting on the playoffs being in Pella this year...and thought that we might have a game here...out west...and more doable for both he and I to hook up.  The Beakes need to be that 12th man, again.

It sounds like Wartburg needed us this past weekend, too!

Doolittle,

thanks for the kind words.  So do you follow other IIAC sports. I can honestly say I don't.  I don't have the time.  Also not a slap at other sports but after football I really drop off the sports watching.  Hope those little ones have rebounded.

I follow IIAC basketball a bit but not as closely as I do football.  Football is easy for me to follow because of the games all being on saturdays.  My wife pretty much writes me off on saturdays during football season.  I went to the UD/Wartburg game at UNI's west gym last year and I listen to UD games if I get a chance but that ends up being maybe half of the games.

Little one #1 has rebounded and is no longer sick.  Little one #2 is now home puking her guts out.  So I guess little one #3 will be getting sick sometime wednesday night if this thing keeps on schedule.  I told my wife I hope I have immunity to this since I had the flu 3 weeks ago but I doubt it.  Apparently this is working its way through the preschool class right now.

So uh, if UD went 6-4 last year and then 7-3 this year...I guess that means they MUST go 8-2 next year!?!?  Just wondering.

Talk to Maruer....I was an "honorary Beake" for a few years.  ;D Good times. Maurer going stealth isn't an option -- have you seen him? I think you guys should definitely invade campus again sometime soon; I hear that Tim Phillips and Geoff Haskell have both moved on. The new administration can't know the legend....can they? The current Beakes need some....encouragement.

Well you UD backers can hope.  Next year has to put the Knights in the preseason favorite IMO.  I think #2 may be wide open.  Simpson I think has a lot back and Coe is Coe.  So this may be off the cuff but I would say Wartburg then UD, Central, Coe, maybe Cornell if they can replace the O lineman will fight it out for the next spots.  BV has to replace some skill positions and could be in the mix.  Loras and Luther I am sure will have something to say as well.  I see the IIAC next year as being pretty wide open with Wartburg being the favorite.  Central and UD IMO have the most graduation losses.  Cornell can improve if they find the players to fill their needs.  (maybe they have them already and just didn't get PT and had to wait for graduation) Coe may be the second favorite as they lose Tekippe and a few others and have a strong D coming back.

As for Central we just have to focus on here and now and work to get some W's and some respect for the IIAC.

Damn. The Central fans are coming outta the woodwork here. I think it is time that we put these shenanigans to bed. Central won. Was it nice to go to Waverly, play rock solid defense (with the exception of one play) win in dramatic fashion, and come back to Pella with a conference championship, and No.1 seed in the playoffs? Damn skippy. However, you know how this program deals with wins. We allow ourselves to celebrate on Saturday and then come Monday, its back to the field to prepare for the next week. Listening to people rehash about a PI and supposed fumble is like listening to Fox News and CNN carry on about Anna Nicole Smith. Besides, there are more important things to keep in mind. Yesterday was Veterans Day and in the past two days, 10 fellow paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade have fallen.

On to Olivet. From looking at their statistics, them seem fairly balanced. QB Rob White with 1697 yds 12 TDs, and 8 picks. Go to guy from the receivers is #7 Chris Smith (59-783-10). On the ground, Pat Clasgens and Willie Jones combined for 16 TDs and 1202 yds. White doesn't look to be very mobile, so I think that bodes well. Central has managed to really reign in teams' big receivers, so that leaves the running game to try and beat the Dutch. I don't see it happening. This class has two years of playoff experience and will be more than motivated to get out of the first round this time.

Oldbeake, I was a young'n at the CUI-UWEau-Claire at Jack Trice. That games was bone-chillingly cold.

WOW,

I missed out in those days.  I would have never expected that from Central! :D

I'm trying to think of Beake cheers, but Oldbeake and dutchie has taken most of the ones I know. I can't remember all the good ones because we were never allowed to yell them. Fun haters. Although, my dad was in TKB at Central (the 70's version of today's Beakes) and taught me this one:

Ok, I'm back. I wasn't avoiding you guys, honest. I was at the inlaws who don't have internet and we ended up staying an extra day since my wife is a gov't worker.
My thoughts on the game.
I was awefully frustrated after the first half being +2 in the turnover department and only up 7-0. I didn't watch Central's defense a ton, but it appeared that there was 1 big mismatch that the Dutch were able to exploit on the line. I was ready to come on here and post at halftime that Connell was the most overrated player in the conference. Glad I didn't or I would certainly be eating crow.
The ONE call I was in position to see was the "block in the back"
HORRIBLE call if I ever saw one. It sure looked like it was going to be, and we were all starting to say "don't do it, don't do it." At the last second, the defender did turn right into the block and was crushed. Unfortunately, the official had already thrown the flag. That really upsets me about officiating when they "anticipate" thing. That made it so Wartburg had the ball inside the 10, rather than at the 30. That is a huge shift from a field position/playcall standpoint. We were the beneficiary of a decent spot that led to one first down on the drive, but then again, HUGE change from punting at the 40 to punting inside the 20.
2 biggest plays of the game happened when Wartburg was kicking off. The long return to set up the 2nd half had Wartburg playing in the shadows of their own endzone with the wind at their back for almost the entire third quarter.
The other was the kick out of bounds with around 2:15 to go that ended up giving Central the ball at midfield to lead to their last drive.
The PI call, as an offensive coach, I would expect to get that called. Was there contact? Yes. Sure looked like it was mutual, but I know that offensive PI is RARELY called. I have no idea if the ball was catchable or not, but I can certainly appreciate Koehler's efforts to get it changed. He has to in that situation when the other team was just handed a chip shot field goal to win the game.
The play that had me burnt up was the Connel trytokilltheclockbutfumble.
I thought he was bobbling the ball on the way up, and then it looked like the ball went backwords. Doesn't matter if his arm was going forward since he wasn't being hit when he threw it, if that ball goes backwords its a fumble. He was NOT tackled onto the ball like his dad is trying to make us think. He jumped on the ball and then everyone jumped on him like is usually the case in fumbles. Again, the referee was just anticipating that it would be a routine play and called incomplete and then had to save face by saying "his arm was going forward"
Alas, instant replay in that situation wouldn't have mattered because they would have had to stop the clock to check it out and Central would have been able to come out and kick it anyway.

Clutch catch by the Central rec. on 4th and 4. Got drilled and was able to hang on.
I would have liked to see Schuring and Suckow at full speed. I could tell they were both quite tentative and never made any cuts or had a big burst. Suckow had the long TD, but wasn't pulling away like I've seen him in the past.

Connel was more impressive on his feet than through the air which I was not expecting at all.
There was twice as many people if not more there for Wartburg than there were for Central. There is 500 or less seats on the visitors side and 4500 on the home side. There was one half of one section of Central fans on the home side. That is actually more common than one would think that there is visitors in the home bleachers. Hate to break it to you Central fans, but Coe may have brought more to W-H this year than you did.
Large crowds at Wartburg are always disappointing. The crowd gets very dilluted and the people that are usually up are sorrounded by the casual fan. I know I was sorrounded by gray-haireds that were all bundled up and sitting the whole time. I had to move up to the top so I could stand and yell. The REAL good crowds are the 2500-3000 days when, although not full, the diehards are there and the place is rocking. FWIW, Even though Central had a lot of people at their home game last year, I thought the place was extremely quiet then to.

Also, FWIW-I was not looking forward to going to OT with the Dutch, but I like those odds better than a 25 yard field goal from the middle of the field.

Don't forget everyone to send me your AC picks and I'll try to have them up by tomorrow afternoon.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Heh heh heh...encouragement...yep.  And df1, if you are who I think you are...I think that you let me sleep on the couch in your lounge one night after many cans of encouragement.  I have no doubt that you're good beake people. ;)

Airborne: Come on Central, Let's Go!  That was a brutal afternoon...terribly cold...and a solid butt-kicking, too.  Ugh!

DF04: We had a lot of fun, and those years at Central were truly great.  Probably unorthodox by stereotypical "Central Standards," but loud and true.  We're going to have to come back and remind some people that we aren't dead yet (I'm sure to the chagrin of some :P).

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Question---
A little "what if" but a lot more "what happens if"

What happens if Wartburg and Central play earlier on in the year? Does it give the loser a better chance at getting in if they win out.
Say this year for instance- Does Wartburg get in if the loss comes earlier and we're talking about winning their last 4 or 5. I know there's a lot of hype, but I gotta believe after the winner of this game winning the conference title the last 10 years, people are going to pay attention anyway.
Does Wartburg get in over Eau Claire (are they Pool c?) at 8-2 if Central game is the first game of the year rather than the last?

In keeping with Beake tradition, hopefully that liquid encouragement was either Natty Light or a Paint Can.

Simpson has their football schedules for the next two seasons up.  Their non-con games each of the next two years are Grandview...who's first season of varsity play is next year, and Northwestern of Mn.  who has lost to Cornell each of the last 2 seasons.  You can look and see what time of the year your favorite team is playing the Storm.  I don't know if any other schools have their future schedules posted.
