I did here of a resignation in Decorah. This saddens me a bit, as I think coach Hefty is a good coach and a better person.

That is truly too bad.
Is he going elsewhere to coach?

I heard he did some plumbing/handyman-type jobs at Koehler's house this past Summer...  ;)

Went over to the MIAA board to see if I could find out a little more about Olivet...that place is like a ghost town.  Central really needs to put the blinders on, and focus on practice this week, and put the hay in the barn against Olivet on Saturday.  For some reason this unexpected #1 seed, and "weaker" draw in the first round makes me a little nervous.  From the look of things on the MIAA board, Olivet will be rolling into Pella with little more than the guys on the team bus, and nothing to lose.
They are in an 8 team league that posted a 7-17 nonconference record, including 0 wins against teams that finished above 500.  Want another IIAC team to do your heavy lifting?

They beat Hope, who by all accounts played us pretty tough.  Don't think the Dutch will have a problem with them...all I'm saying is that we don't want to get caught looking ahead.  In response to your question...no.

Speaking of heavy(?) lifting...Cornell beat Alma, who beat Olivet.

Also, Northwestern MN., frustrated with not being able to solve Cornell the past two years bumps the Rams and signs up for some beat-down from the Storm.

dutchhawk,
I never used the word "unstoppable" for Rocket Screen. Don't be putting words into my mouth.

However, it was used for the Knights TD.  As the court reporter for that game, I was informing people know how they scored.

On a seperate note, I'm going to be about 10 minutes from Mary Hardin Baylor's campus next week.
Depending on when I head home, maybe I'll get to catch their 2nd round game since I'm assuming they are hosting?

I do have a question about Central's defense  though. Which being a defensive guy, I will give props to on shutting down WB Sat.
How does a Central defense give up some 390 yds/game in the IIAC  to teams (for the most part) that have less talent and or not as good of an offense as WB?  Yet they can play like the steel curtain last Sat.
Why couldn't/didn't  they play like that in all(or most) of their other games this year?   Would you say that they played down to their opponent's level?

Makes sense...Most Luther grads end up working for Wartburg alums, so the trend might as well extend to their coaches.

Floyd....

I was referring to football and define "being back" as returning to the Norse records from '54-'57 and '69-71 when the Norse beat Western Illinois in one of the only small college bowl games in the country and in the '70's when we played in the Stagg Bowl.  I either played or coached (part-time) at that time.
We have the coaching staff for it.  What we need is more alumni support.  By the way, pay attention to MBB.  We have something coming there.

Thanks oldNorse!  That is the "being back" that I would like to see as well!  Good to know that a poster is on here that was part of the Edsel era!

The Norse Athletic Association (as you know) was started this year.  I have given money (what I could afford) over the years to sports programs and gave to the NAA as well, but I was under the assumption that the money was mostly going to things like the spring trips that baseball and softball take or the other various travel expenses of the 19 athletic teams.  Has the athletic department tried to raise money at times in recent years and been unsuccessful?  Was it that they wanted to but were not allowed since the College was building up the endowment or the higher calling campaign?  What should the alumni being doing?

You are the first person I know not currently associated with the MBB program to sound optimistic about Norse Hoops.  I hope you are right as Coach Peterson had a few decades of good teams many years ago.

#1 Leave my kid out of this.

#2 If you read all of my posts Central was our other choise,so how do I HATE Central if I was willing to let my son commit there if it was where he wanted to go?

#3 We lost two games this year we should have won-how are we supposed to act?

#4 Sorry to not sound like an IIAC backer, but if Central had performed better in their playoff trips we would be in this year.I hope they go all the way so they can get in next year after they finish #2 in the conference.

I've had the title of #1 Central basher hung on me here It's not what I've set out to do. I just say how I feel. From what others have posted here I'm not alone. But if I have to endure cracks about me, my typing, and my kid to express how I feel, then ok, but be prepared to take it back in kind.
I'm sorry, my message was aimed at you, and only you, and I was trying to sum up all the reasons (I perceived) you hate/dislike/whatever Central.   I assumed YOU had a chip on your shoulder b/c you didn't feel the coaching staff showed much interest on your visit.  I should have gone back and quoted the messages I was referring to, sorry for the confusion.

Congrats to the Dutch on a good season. Hopefully you guys make a deep run and bring home a title to the IIAC.

I saw that someone else already addressed this but no one really answered it... any coaches on the hot seat?
I don't think the seat was hot, but I did hear of a resignation in Decorah. This saddens me a bit, as I think Coach Hefty is a good coach and a better person. I have always been impressed, and sometimes amazed, at how positive and enthusiastic he is all the time.

Ditto!  When he was hired there was a lot of hope that Paul would do a good job because he would be a good offensive mind and would recruit well with his personality and style.  From everything I could see he did a good job in recruiting and always seemed like he did his best to carry himself well as the Head Coach of the Norse.  I wish him the best as he moves on with his career.

I think last season changed a lot of things around Luther Football as that was the first year of the Hefty era to see a dip.  Maybe losing a certain assistant in 2005 changed things as well.  There are a couple of position coaches that might change as a result of Paul's resignation.  In fact, I would not be surprised if only a couple of this year's assistants were still at Luther next year.

Change has to be scary for the underclassmen.  Hopefully they choose well like they have in recent years for wrestling, cross country, and baseball.  There is still talent on the Luther campus, so hopefully the new coach can get the most out of the juniors and rest of the returning players next year.

Good Luck Coach Hefty!

I have never heard that version.  Next thing you will be telling me that all of those Northwestern grads are working for the Iowa and Wisconsin grads!  That was the one thing that Wildcat students used to taunt Iowa with as the Hawks were winning 50-0 every year for awhile under Coach Fry. :D

Now, I'm not trying to make up any excuses here because everybody knows that excuses are BS and there are never any valid ones. So these are just my thoughts. I will agree with you on your question. Central has had it's ups and downs on the defensive side of the ball this year. They have been battling injuries and such. But remember, they won the conference the past two years, so they are out there with a target on their backs. They are taking everyones best shot. As a former coach, I always wanted to take down the teams that were on the top. Don't you think Minnesota would love to beat USC? Honestly, there is no excuse for the Dutchs up and down defense. One thing for sure, they played great on saturday and they need to keep that rolling into the playoffs. Anyways, your question has raised another question for me. Why do the Dutch have to be the ones playing down to their opponents? Isn't it possible for their opponents to be playing up to the Dutch? Again, just my thoughts.
