Coach Hefty will definitely be missed -- he was a fantastic guy, both on and off the field. He's a class act all the way around.

Any thoughts on his replacement?

I don't know if they are looking at promoting someone from within the program, but if that was the case, I would bet they would be leaning towards Marlow as a replacement.  He has experience, he is an alum and he has been there for awhile and knows the program and the kids.  Coach Boyd could be a possibility as well.  He has been with Hefty since he came in and is another guy that is in touch with the kids and the program.  Those are the first two names that came up in my mind when I read the article this morning.
Coach Boyd was elevated to Associate Head Coach before this season. Not sure if that means anything. I think he would be a very good candidate.

I hope Coach Boyd stays even though he came to Luther from Aurora with Coach Hefty (when Paul was the offensive coordinator there).  I also hope Coach Marlow (defensive coordinator) and Coach Jaeger (DL coach) stay and they both would seem more likely since they have been coaching at Luther longer than the Hefty era and Marlow is a Luther grad.

Milt Hendrickson (Class of 1996) would get some attention as a possible head coach if he applied.  Milt played OL and DL for Luther, coached at Luther, was associate head coach under Coach Hefty before he left, and is currently working for the Baltimore Ravens.  Most of the linemen around from his era of coaching (guys like Stavast, Sadler, etc.) thought highly of him.  Hendrickson might have even won a high school state title as a coach in Wisconsin before coming back to coach at Luther.

Besides the people listed above, it will be interesting to see how much the Luther ties matter in the coaching search.  Is the job and the football program going to be presented and supported by the AD and President to where they could find an established head coach from another program?  I am not talking about someone who has a mediocre resume but rather someone with a solid to great resume at a level like the St. Olaf coach or the Coe coach.  I am not implying that Luther is going to go after either coach but rather just using them as examples.

My dream candidate even though he is not probably ever going to leave his current job as offensive line coach at Iowa is Reece Morgan.  I know he is not that young nor has the Iowa OL been as strong this year, but he has won as both a high school coach (Benton and Iowa City West) and Kirk Ferentz has always thought very highly of him.  There would be a lot of positive ramifications if the Norse were able to hire him.

It is great to have good coaches at Luther that also were Norsemen themselves, but I have no problem going out and finding the next Edsel Schweizer or Pete Peterson even if they have no ties to Luther.  The big thing is that the school supports the program and finds someone that moves the program forward and not backward.

I agree Floyd.  The most important thing for the next coach is that he is able to build on the foundations that Hefty has created in Decorah and elevate the program to the next level.  I talked to Milt when I was in town during Homecoming and I know he is moving back to the midwest to do his scouting for the Ravens.  I am not sure how interested he would be in the job because when I asked him how he liked his job, he said, "I love it."  I would love to see anyone of the guys that have been around (Marlow, Hendrickson, Boyd) as the next head coach for the Norse, but more importantly, I would like to see the Norse take the next step and challenge Central and Wartburg for a conference title.
Go Norse!!!

Not only that, Alma is running in fear too.
I think they both dropped us for the upcoming year.

Who is Cornell going to beat now that two of the worst teams in the country won't play them?

I believe they are playing Grinnell and Carleton next year. Don't ask me why about Grinnell because I am wondering the same damn thing.

Good Luck to Luther on finding a new coach. I agree I think Boyd or Marlow would probably be good. Hefty truly was/is a class act guy and I wish him the best of luck in whatever he decides to do next.
