Airborne Dutch

Johnnie Red, a place that I recommend for fans on a Friday night is probably Doc Salamis or the bar out at Bos Landen. Don't know about Bos, but Salamis is a pretty good place. As a Dutch fan, I would see no dilemma with holding the festivities in the parking lot.

Dutch fans, what was the student turnout for the game? Just curious because I have a feeling it is going to be pretty thin on Saturday (thanksgiving break).

Excellent points Dutch Radio... In watching the game last year way too many run left run right throw on 3rd and 12.  Our passing game is the key to victory but in last years game Connell was 12-18.  Now 18 attempts is halftime.  He had 12 throws in the fourth quarter alone when we absolutely had to.  6 attempts for the first 3 quarters isn't balanced play calling.  McMartin is more willing to open it up more this year and that is the difference in the passing game.

The willingness to open it up has come from recent sucess from better throws and catches in the season.  This catagory alone makes me feel if the D plays like they did last year Dutch win 35-21

What can we as Johnnie fans expect from the 2007 version of the Central Dutch?

Good overall team speed or smash mouth run up the middle?

How is the team speed on defense? The Johnnies would much rather throw than pass, how does that stack up for the Dutch?

If you have any questions about the Johnnies we have an awesome fan website where you can read all of our stories about the season www.JohnnieFootball.com

We (the fans) aren't all football all the time, we also like to talk about Hamm's beer, deer hunting, and many other "off topic" items.

Looking forward to a fun week ;D
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Voice of the Dutch

What can you expect from the Dutch?

On offense - this has become a pass first team.  IIAC MVP Connell at QB and both WRs are first team all-conference.  6'4" Josh Smith with a great combination of size, speed and hands.  Cody Huisman is more of the possession receiver but if he breaks a tackle he has the speed to take it all the way.  '05 and '06 IIAC MVP Vance Schuring has missed half the season with an injury, and is just starting to find his stride.  Has about 300 yards rushing in the last three games.  The offensive line has been solid in pass-protection, but has struggled with its run-blocking.  Schuring is good for about one long run per game, but there are still too many 0 yard runs.

On defense, the Dutch have a TON of team speed.  They struggled in the middle of the year without Dustin Baethke.  But he returned to full strength a couple of weeks ago, and was FLYING around the field against both Wartburg and Olivet.  Plays the run well, especially on the edge, and can cover slot receivers and TEs.  Linebackers Greg Altmeir and Andrew Lehn have played exceptional against the run, and CB Guy Dierx has 7 INTs on the year.

Central has 1st-team punter Curtis Brondyke, although he hasn't pinned nearly as many punts deep later in the season like he did early in the season.  Freshman kicker Jake Viggers has been great, kicking game winners against Dubuque and Wartburg.  Few blocked punts, and a pretty good punt return team.  The kick coverage team gives up too many yards for my liking.

After watching the game today its too bad that Wartburg was at home this weekend.  Nothing against Olivet.  They won their conference and thats all you have to do to make the playoffs but there are way better teams out there that are home.  I did think the crowd they brought was excellent.  Very loud for the numbers the brought, tailgated and had a good time.  .

Good luck stopping 2 IIAC MVP's and all 15 different recieving threats.  Bring a big crowd.  Have a good time.  Bring your A game because these red heads are ready.

Doesn't matter if the team from Waverly was in the bracket as the IIAC has already proven they can't compete on a national level.  Your number 1 seed was a gift for crawling through your conference schedule.

Telling us to bring a big crowd... pleeassee, check in more than once a season... nobody, and I mean nobody travels better than SJU.  The only victory you'll know is having the comfort we're all crying about a 4 hour trip Saturday morning.

Developing....

I'm just telling you to bring it.  No excuses.  Too bad SJU couldn't "crawl through a schedule"  If you didn't use your Johnnie Magic against St Olaf you would be staying home enjoying your weekend....

Pot calling the kettle black, Dusty?

Funny that Central "crawls through a schedule", when St. John's not only loses a game, but also has to hold off St. Olaf to win by 1 and score 10 in the fourth quarter to beat a 3-7 Carelton team by 3.

Everyone has close games - have you watched any DI football this year Dusty?  The key is, Central has won ALL of theirs.  Not too many 11-0 teams anywhere in college football.

As for the game - there are a couple of VERY important things that Central will need to do Saturday that it couldn't do last year.

1 - Get off the field.  The Johnnies were an amazing 4-6 on fourth down last year and controlled the clock.

2 - Not turn the ball over.  The Dutch took incredible care of the football last year, but turned the ball over twice against the Johnnies.

3 - Protect Connell.  He was sacked four times in last years game.

Same coach, same quarterback, same running back.  And I'm glad they're all here.  You're right Johnnie fans, it's the same Central team - just a much improved version.

Dutch Radio;  I suggest you change your name to Dutch Oven as your assessments are rudimentary and completely baked.

And by crowd he means never beens who sat 7 deep on the depth chart on the 200+ roster and still want to feel close to the games with out feeling dumb for standing behind 4 other people just to see a play when they were on the sideline/team.  SJU's students don't attend games much and very rarely travel so their BIG crowd is very weak.

This comes from a Bethel fan whose campus was just over run with Johnnie fans a mere week ago.  A game with St. John's on the BU campus - 10,000, any other game without SJU - 1,500.... absolutely priceless FreeBird.  Come up with a little levity and originallity next time... you're out of your league.

Sure, Freebird, which is why UW-RF upped ticket prices and charged for parking for the SJU game there this season ...

How has Bethel traveled to its previous 2nd round games?

You have got to be kidding...You obviously do not have a clue.  The students have a very strong presence at home games, which is why they built an entirely new section that is filled with students.   And, the students are a big part of the reason why SJU often has more fans than the home team at away games (e.g., St Thomas).

You must be the Yogi Berra of Iowa!  "If the Johnnies didn't win enough games to get in the playoffs, they wouldn't be there."

How close does the score have to be for Central to squeek a win at the last minute while being out gained?  21 pts close enough?

So tell me then where your students were at Bethel?  I didn't see one.  No doubt SJU travels well but their student don't bother to travel, only alums and parents.  This makes for a huge crowd that is very weak.  That is my point.

So next week are going to have a 3rd round joke lined up?  Get them in while you can because they are getting weaker and weaker.

There was a host of lovely Bennies sitting right behind me.  And to have sat behind me you had to get there at 10:30.  Lot's of students there.  They were just not congregated in one place.

Since I'm stuck at work today and quite a bit of a following from Minnesota is on here.  How are the Vikes doing?  Not that you're a Vikings fan if you live in Minnesota but I'm a follower.  I'm sure Daunte has 5 int's at the moment.
