Anyone ever remember a football game in a winter storm?

Depends how far back you want to go.  Luther vs Parsons for the championship of the IIAC IN 1957 played on an ice field with snow falling.  Norse won.  Parsons coach said they made two mistakes: Getting on the bus in Fairfield and getting off the bus in Decorah.

Still hope the Dutch win this week.  They didn't in the 50's.

Homecoming 1991.  Brutal.  I think that it was in October, too.  The worst thing was that my parents hadn't sent my warm clothes to school yet.

A Canadian buddy on my floor and I went to the bookstore before the game, bought Central "tukes" and wore several pairs of socks over our hands because we didn't have gloves.  Central won, but as a fan...it was hard to sit there.  I don't remember if they did the usual homecoming stuff at half time (I can only imagine that had to suck) because we ran back to our dorm to warm up.

Posted this over in the MIAC board also.  Would love to be there on Saturday, but Uncle Sam is a rather demanding boss.  Enjoy the afternoon, everybody!  Here's to another playoff classic!

NWS Forecast for Pella:

Saturday: Snow and sleet likely before noon, then periods of rain, freezing rain and sleet. High near 32. Wind chill values as low as 5. Windy, with a southeast wind between 17 and 24 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Saturday Night: Periods of rain. Low around 29. Windy, with a southeast wind 17 to 21 mph becoming west. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Yikes!  Wishing all safe travels this weekend, and it sounds like BU folks would be smart to make hotel reservations in Pella just in case it gets REALLY ugly.

Monmouth was a conf champ the year before playing Wartburg.

The MWC...I suppose thats comparable to the MIAA but I was saying more to our scheduling Augustana and  Bethel the years before that.
That Monmouth AQ, however, lost 62-3 in round one.  One of the worst West playoff teams in years ...

Who beat them that year...was it SJU?
Yeah, you know it's a lousy day at work when you this is your first look at the boards today ... but yes, it was SJU over Monmouth. Thirteen sacks by the other red that day.

Best of luck to all sides Saturday and safe travels. On a dry field, I'd figured it would be a good  day for Central if Bethel's d-front needs help and the Royals had to blitz more than they'd like. I figure your QB would have some opps for big breaks that way. If it's nasty and wet, it just might get crazy and we'll see which team protects the ball better.

A wet field always benefits the offensive player. They know where they are going, therefore they know when they are going to cut. It is much harder to cut when you are reacting on a wet surface. Hopefully having FieldTurf newly installed helps if its just raining, I dunno about the snow though!

Anybody else remember the game against Augustana at Central in the bog, you would be out at the hash marks up to your ankle in mud!

I remember watching it.  I've never seen a field with more mud than grass before.  If I remember right, after that game, they would not let Auggie host any more playoffs, not that there were many more to go that year.

I'm going to have to disagree.  I was on the wet field during the Miami at Pittsburgh Monday Night game which ended with a 3-0 score.

IMO, nasty weather heavily helps the Royals due to our running O and D. It could turn out to be an equalizer in a game the Dutch have an edge in.

Freebird-
Big differences between the Pittsburg field and Central's field.
1) Grass vs. Field turf
2) Listening to ESPN radio during the game and the next morning, ESPN guys said the Pittsburg field had had a college game and multiple HS games played on it the week before MNF.

I would agree bad weather would favor BU's style, but the offenses probably won't struggle as much as the MNF game in my opinion.  The Pittsburg analogy is a little apples/oranges to this game.

That is fair, I can buy that.  Especially because the Central field is Field turf.  I do think it will be a lower scoring game.

How low? The winning team scoring over/under 14.5 pts?

Having not seen Central in a few years it is tough to say.  I think for Bethel to win we need to hold you guys under 14.

Old Dutch

Holy Cow! I agree witih a Bethel fan.  Yes holding the Dutch to under 14 could be trouble in Tulip Town.  However our Defense is more likely to score 14 themselves in bad weather.   Don't option teams have trouble putting the ball on the ground in bad conditions?  therfore my pick for Central to score 28, 14 by the D and 14 by the O.
