Walston,

I met the  left Guard for the 03' squad the other day at the gym.   He's a trainer there and I was touting a knights shirt.
I'm  drawing a blank on his name now, Josh from Pekin.  Big dude.
I'm pretty sure he thought I was a cross country runner though when he asked me if i went to school there.

I was in TX for thanksgiving visiting the grandparents- they live 15 minutes from Mary Hardin Baylor's campus (very, very  good team by the way) so I got to hang out with Wheeler and Ginn for a few hours friday night in their hotel.  They made a comment that MHB looked like PLU on film and the score was evidence of that.

Speaking of high paying football coaches, there are numerous TX high school coaches who make $100k+ and they aren't even required to teach a class.  It's a whole different world down there when it comes to football.

Hodapp was #5 wasn't he.  He was a horse and I mean he was a man out there on the field.  Then came Hammes and I think he was better than Hodapp if that was possible.  Wartburg has been able to get good backs.  When Hodapp was running they had a big tackle don't know his name but 78 was the number I believe.  He was huge.  Got to be fun running behind a guy that big.
Andy Parker wore #5 when he was one of the Wartburg RBs in 03-04.  Hodapp wore #34.  Both guys could deliver and take a hit pretty well.  That's the thing that's impressed me with Wartburg's backs since my time in school...tough SOBs usually.  Beatty, Dapp, Parker, Hammes, VanRees, Benny Thompson...mean dudes between the lines but decent guys off the field.
#78 was Andy Heitman.  Dude was just a monster.  I think they listed him at 330ish, but he was a lot closer to 375 his senior year.  And at 6'8 he had a wingspan that could keep damn near anybody at an arm's length.  Pretty funny dude to hang around with.  And he loves 7 & 7.

WHat HS Beaver of Yore?
South O'Brien, in northwest Iowa.  It's not exactly a hotbed of talent most years, but BV and Northwestern have turned some farm boys into good football players over the years.

I'll second that opinion!  I haven't played in a few years, but I remember BV's roster being full of kids from Kingsley-Pierson, Alta, Denison, Ar-We-Va....all those small Western Iowa schools.   With BV, you could always count on:
      1)  Solid O- and D-Lines that were big and physical.
      2)  Decent sized linebackers that would come up and hit you every play
      3)  A team that never would quit
      4)  A team that played clean.
      5)  Freezing your butt off if you played in Storm Lake in November!  Ha ha ;D

As an O-lineman, I HATED playing BV.  I'd rather play Simpson or Wartburg anyday.  But it seems like they were only a skill player away from being a great football team.  Imagine BV in late late 90's if they'd have had a Trevor Shannon, Guy Leman, or Mark Kac (played just down the road in West Bend!)

One thing I've always wondered - why can't BV get the kids from Emmetsburg or Spencer to come and play there?  There's a ton of talent in those two schools, not to mention West Lyon, West Bend, Harlan, and some of the other high school powerhouses out there.

BV actually gets quite a few good players from Harlan and Emmetsburg.  In recent years: Harlan - Kaufmann, Svendsen, Ohlinger, ; Emmetsburg - Hobart, Bredehoeft, Pierce.  There have been more, but those guys come to mind first.

However, many of the very best players from those schools end up walking on at bigger schools or trying their luck at JUCOs.  I can think of several guys off the top of my head that nearly went to BV but were lured away by the prospect of scholarship money and the "prestige" of D-I and D-II programs.

The big Dutch kids from Sioux and Lyon counties almost always end up at either Sioux Falls or Northwestern due to factors related to religion and location, so BV misses out on a lot of good football bodies from what many outsiders perceive to be BV's home territory.

The last good thing that Spencer produced was Blake Gillis and he wrestles for the evil empire.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have never seen any players from Heelan come to BV.

How many IIAC head coaches are teaching classes?  When I was at BV Osty was teaching a few classes.  I have heard that Anderson is not teaching any classes.

It is my understanding that if they have the coaches teach classes then they can pull money from the academic side of the institution to pay for a portion of their salary.  Thus would lead to less of a burden on the athletic department.

Does anyone have any insight into this or have any comments?

You are correct, sir.  I don't remember ever having anyone from the Sioux City metro area on the team while we were there.

The Show

We had an all-state Sioux City East RB on the team back in 00-01, but he never made the travel team if I recall correctly.  Think he was a junior when I came in.

pretty sweet game by Freddy yesterday.  He exposed  fellow d3 LB  london fletcher on his 54 yd catch and got his 22 yd gain on the first play of the game when Wash  only lined up with 10 guys to honor Taylor.

I do have a question though, when did he put on 30 pounds?
They have him listed @ 215 and when I played against him(his so yr)  he was maybe 180-185
Over the past five years or so since he stopped running track and focused on the NFL.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Has anyone noticed that we are only like 4 pages behind the WIAC board?  I don't remember being this close.  Maybe having Central play 3 playoff games has been a good thing.   ;D

And have two of them against us loudmouths from the north ... ;)

Not sure where I saw it, but I read recently that Larry Kehres, the MUC coach, makes $121K. Seems like a bargain ...

Airborne Dutch

As long as we are on the topic of Patton, he was an armor guy so I have to hold that against. However, he did recognize excellence when he saw. He is credited with giving the 82nd Airborne the distinction of "America's Guard of Honor" once he saw them at the end of WWII. Just a little bit of military history for ya. Since it is the offseason, how about a few hot topics? Who are the big name HS players from Iowa and where are they headed next year? Should Division I-A football go to a DIII style playoff? Will the Patriots go undefeated? The topic possibilites are endless......

I believe that Coach Mac teaches at Central.  I am not sure what the class is.

Willis used to teach a football theory class and I think Koehler does the same. I think a lot of the assistants teach a PE class. Although one is the director of parents & alumni, and another teaches at Waverly.
Heitman was a monster, and always had something to add to the conversation, whether it made sense or not.
Dave, I assume you are talking about Jason Ingle. He and Tom Power were 2 guys that got a lot of PT as freshmen when I was a senior. Ingle eventually ended up being the LT that replaced all-everything, Jeff Vores. Power started for 3 years at Center and played a lot as a freshmen when my brother sprained my ankle.
The one guy that doesn't get mentioned as a Knights RB is Jake "Barry" Flanders. Instant Offense as it seemed like it was a TD every time he touched the ball. Of course he was playing behind Hodapp and Beatty so he never got any recognition.
I was trying to remember who the Central RB was in '01 and '02. They had a huge FB.
Coe at that time of course had Jackson. I think Loras had a pretty good back then too.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

I know Hefty taught classes at Luther.  He taught the coaching principles of football and other physical education, like volleyball, kayaking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.  Most of the coaches on staff at Luther also teach in the physical education department.

I took a class that Williams taught. Here's another story about Williams being old school. We couldn't wear hats in football meetings with him, so all of the football players taking his course knew we weren't suppose to wear hats in his class. I'll never forget the kid, I think he was a baseball player, who came into the first class with a hat on. None of us said anything because we wanted to see Williams reaction. He walked in, saw the guy wearing the hat and just stared him down...he didn't say a word. The kid had no idea why Williams was giving him the death stare until someone said softly...take your hat off. He quickly did and Williams started class like nothing had happened.  :)

Thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of the coaches taught at least one class at Simpson.
