I believe that Coach Mac teaches at Central.  I am not sure what the class is.

Coach Mac teaches a fund. of football class or I assume that he is still teaching that class. Pretty standard at Central for the coaches to teach a class on their respective sports unless they have another position like our baseball coach Stevens being director of intramurals.

One of the best classes I took at Central was actually fund. of baseball/softball with Coach Wares, our softball coach who was recently inducted into the fastpitch hall of fame I believe. Oh, and of course I had already completed my major requirements, and taking a baseball class just added to my academic prowess.

I know at Central the head coaches need to have master's degrees.  Is that conference wide as well?  A couple of added letters at the end of your name definitely helps your personal income.

I think that all of the head coaches also teach at Central.  I think that it's known as "wellness" now, instead of physical education, right?  Gotta love trying to keep up with the Jonses. :)

I don't believe it is a requirement to have a masters. I know of one position where it was not. A lot of times you can tell who the administration wants to get the job by the way the description is written. If there is no requirement for a masters it may well be that a prominent high school coach is on the very short list.

I know Hefty taught classes at Luther.  He taught the coaching principles of football and other physical education, like volleyball, kayaking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.  Most of the coaches on staff at Luther also teach in the physical education department.

The new head coach will teach the football coaching class.

I am curious to see where the Norse go with a new head coach.  A lot really depends on what the Norse do with that position.  As far as improving for next year, I think the one position that Norse really struggled with this year was at QB.  You cannot be successful being a one-dimensional team, no matter how good that one dimension is.  The Norse need to get to a point of balance in the offensive schemes where they can run and pass effectively and keep defenses honest and off-balance.

Luther is interviewing head coach prospects this week.  The college president told the Rotary Club that he wants someone hired by Christmas.  AD said he want someone on staff shortly after the first of the year.  Search committee is moving along.  No hints as to who is the likely candidate.

It sounds like four guys interview this week and one will interview next week.  No Iowa Conference or Luther (current or ex) candidates among the five, but one candidate is from a program within the State of Iowa while the other four are Midwest coaches.  Hopefully they will select well and be done by Christmas.

Are they hiring another Wartburg grad to do misison work?
Maybe Osterberger wants to try another IIAC school.
Ken O'keefe may be looking for work soon.

I don't think Luther would want him....

Obscure College Score of the Week No. 2: Bethel 27, Central 14 (Division III playoffs). Located in Pella, Iowa, Central College attempted 36 passes, for 15 completions and three interceptions, even though the field was thickly covered in ice owing to an ice storm. TMQ regularly notes that nearly all colleges attempt to give the impression they are featured in the influential U.S. News rankings. Central declares, "U.S. News and World Report includes Central in its 2008 edition of 'America's Best Colleges.'" Includes! Check the magazine: Central's ranking is, well, out of respect for Central, I will bleep it out.

Schools in the IIAC wish to have there head coaches have masters degrees so that they have the chance to teach classes.  Thus all the head coaches at the school teach a course in the sport they coach.  They also often teach some type of fitness/health class in the fall.

This makes great sense for budgeting reasons.  Think about all the head coaches picking up 1 course a semester.  That makes it much easier to get away with less faculty in the fitness/sports managment fields.

It just seems unusual when a head coach leaves one conference school for another.  I know it happens in the SEC all of the time now, but I hope Coach Ferentz doesn't confuse the Big Ten with the SEC and head to Michigan.  I know that former Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman switched from Iowa to Michigan, but that is a lot easier to do in academic circles than in athletics.

Like Osterberger switching from a head job at B.V. to Loras, I still remember when Wartburg Baseball coach Joel Holst was running the Loras Baseball program in a solid fashion.  I didn't know until just recently that Holst also graduated from Coe! :)  He has done a great job at Wartburg though as he and Coach Miller are the first two guys I think of when I think of good coaches in Waverly.

Coe came out ahead on the "TeKippe for Suckow" trade  ::) that a few on this board were spinning, but Coe would love to have Coach Holst back in Cedar Rapids coaching baseball.  They have a nice baseball program, but it hasn't been consistent like Wartburg in the last decade.

Hodapp was #5 wasn't he.  He was a horse and I mean he was a man out there on the field.  Then came Hammes and I think he was better than Hodapp if that was possible.  Wartburg has been able to get good backs.  When Hodapp was running they had a big tackle don't know his name but 78 was the number I believe.  He was huge.  Got to be fun running behind a guy that big.
Andy Parker wore #5 when he was one of the Wartburg RBs in 03-04.  Hodapp wore #34.  Both guys could deliver and take a hit pretty well.  That's the thing that's impressed me with Wartburg's backs since my time in school...tough SOBs usually.  Beatty, Dapp, Parker, Hammes, VanRees, Benny Thompson...mean dudes between the lines but decent guys off the field.
#78 was Andy Heitman.  Dude was just a monster.  I think they listed him at 330ish, but he was a lot closer to 375 his senior year.  And at 6'8 he had a wingspan that could keep damn near anybody at an arm's length.  Pretty funny dude to hang around with.  And he loves 7 & 7.

Andy was one of the nicest guy off the field and I have a picture of him and my son at a party. Andy was a monster. Dan Hammes is one of the nicest guy I've met, competely different guy on the field. Linclon taylor, Dan Hammes , Riley Lieiman and Zach Eggleston and my son were roommate all great kids.

Wartburg Fan,

When was your son a roomate of Dan Hammes.  Dan and my son were suite mates I think my sons senior year which was like 3 years ago.  Small world.  You are right Dan was a really nice kid.  He and my son got along great.  I think that with the experience of having two sons go to two different schools in the IIAC and have two great experiences is a real testament to the IIAC.

Dan and my son graudated  in 07 and they were roommate I believe the middle of  their junior year and senior year.  Dan was in my sons wedding. Dan parents are great people also, in fact just talk to them the other day.
