Central is highlighted on the CBS morning show by alum Harry Smith. Wearing his letter jacket, he does a sweeping tour of campus and he goes on to talk politics in the student union (Maytag) it's absolutely worth watching if you have a little time to do so:  http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=3565591n

Andy Parker wore #5 when he was one of the Wartburg RBs in 03-04.  Hodapp wore #34.  Both guys could deliver and take a hit pretty well.  That's the thing that's impressed me with Wartburg's backs since my time in school...tough SOBs usually.  Beatty, Dapp, Parker, Hammes, VanRees, Benny Thompson...mean dudes between the lines but decent guys off the field.
#78 was Andy Heitman.  Dude was just a monster.  I think they listed him at 330ish, but he was a lot closer to 375 his senior year.  And at 6'8 he had a wingspan that could keep damn near anybody at an arm's length.  Pretty funny dude to hang around with.  And he loves 7 & 7.
Andy was one of the nicest guy off the field and I have a picture of him and my son at a party. Andy was a monster. Dan Hammes is one of the nicest guy I've met, competely different guy on the field. Linclon taylor, Dan Hammes , Riley Lieiman and Zach Eggleston and my son were roommate all great kids.
Wartburg Fan,
When was your son a roomate of Dan Hammes.  Dan and my son were suite mates I think my sons senior year which was like 3 years ago.  Small world.  You are right Dan was a really nice kid.  He and my son got along great.  I think that with the experience of having two sons go to two different schools in the IIAC and have two great experiences is a real testament to the IIAC.
Dan and my son graudated  in 07 and they were roommate I believe the middle of  their junior year and senior year.  Dan was in my sons wedding. Dan parents are great people also, in fact just talk to them the other day.

While we're tossing around niceties, Wartburg Fan your lad is a hell of a good kid too.  Got to know him fairly well when I was at Wartburg and had at least one class with him.  His wife is good stuff too.

Thank you that always good to hear. Yes, his wife is very good persons. Mrs, WB Fan and I think alot of her.

Sportknight: did you work for the college radio station at Burg and if so did you do the interview with my son in 06 during the football season ?

Does anyone have any information pertaining to the rumor that Capt. Kirk is packing his bag for Ann Harbor?

I heard a blurb on some sports radio station that he was the number 1 candidate and set to interview for the postion.

I would have expected him to interview for the Penn State job, but Michigan?

How did a guy with a name like Harry Smith end up at Central?  Or was his name Harry VanderSmith?

What positions do the Jefferson guys play?

The SOB kids would likely be penciled in as follows:
1 OL
2 DL
2 DB
1 WR/P
1 FB/LB
1 ?

One thing I forgot to mention earlier--apparently BV has a new $3k grant available to kids from around 20 or 30 counties in western Iowa.  Since that's the amount the average kid at Northwestern or Morningside gets for athletics, it may help BV attract a few more athletes from the area.

1 two-time 1st Team All-State DB, but could also play WR and Punts
1 two-time All-State OL and can long snap
1 Michael Irvin type LB, also FB
1 RB (All-State)/DE, but could see him as a college SS

Is Greene county in that list of western Iowa counties?

Nope, that wouldn't have been me.  I graduated in the spring of 06, so the 05 season was the last one I was around for.  I did work for the student TV and radio stations, but can't remember if I ever did an interview with your lad.  He could be pretty soft-spoken at times.

Hey, Dutchie!

Great clip. Thanks for the link. We watched it and said, "We were there!" when we saw that pond and the little bridge. You do have a nice campus, and it's cool that you got the publicity.

Are you getting sick of the politicians yet?

I just looked at Simpson's website, and they list Lounsberry as associate head coach. Could it be that they will interview candidates that will not take the job and then just give it to Lounsberry? Just idle speculation on my part.
Lounsberry was the associate head coach for the entire year, so it wasn't a post-Niemann resignation move. I've heard that he really wants the job, but there are no indications that he will even get an interview.
Over Thanksgiving, my cousin that's a former Simpson player told me that Lounsberry is really lobbying the alumni players to try to get an interview for the job, but nobody seems to be backing him up on it.

I think the Simpson job is the more intriguing of the two openings in the conference right now.  Does Sirriani try to get somebody that will make the alums happy, or hire a coach that has no ties to the school, but a good shot to take them back to the level of success they saw in 2003 or even back in 1997/8.  Obviously those are the extremes, and there might be a candidate out there that could fit both bills.  I think that Simpson has to get somebody with college coaching experience, at the D3 level if possible, and has been successful.  As great a high school coach as Swenson is, there are just some guys whose styles don't translate well to the college game, even at this level.

I don't know exactly which counties are included.  If I had to guess, I'd say it includes the western 1/4 to 1/3 of the state, all the way north to south--but that's purely speculation.  All I've heard about it is secondhand information that my brother has gotten from Jay.  Apparently it's one of his main selling points over the phone.

I am sure that they could/will be some exceptions made to that rule.  I am sure if you get a kid wanting to come over from Dubuque, you they will make sure he is taken care of.

Show...Looks like Jefferson had some good kids.  I hope they lean the Storm Lake way.  Just tell them about M-town and that should seal the deal  ;D

Same as a lot of other kids, he wanted to play football for Coach Schipper.  They remained close friends all Skip's life.  He still plugs Central and the football team every chance he gets.
