Coe:  Marv Levy, Fred Hickman of ESPN, Curt Menefee of Fox Sports, former NBA coach Bill Fitch (he is either an alum or coached there at some point)
Fitch is a 1954 graduate of Coe, but didn't coach there. You can add Fred Jackson to the list after his performance Sunday.

If we're going to say Carlos Martinez is a "famous" alum for BV, you would have to include Fred Jackson for Coe. I realize Carlos has played in Arena Football and tried out for a few NFL teams, but Fred is actually making an impact with the Bills.

I wont aruge with that.  Carlos did catch on with the Dallas Cowboys for a while I have not heard where he is at exactally right now.  BOY or Show, you have any information on where Carlos is right now?

According to arenafan.com, he's with the Georgia Force of the AFL.

Interesting.  What is holding him back from catching on with an NFL team for a season, besides its the NFL.  All I ever heard about him was how huge of a leg he had.  I even heard he was out kicking the starter in Philly.

William Shirer, one of my favorite authors, is a Cornell alum.
Um, no he isn't. Shirer graduated from Coe in 1925.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

When he was back at BV coaching and finishing his degree last year, I'd see him out on the game field practicing all the time, and he has a huge leg for sure.  He left BV before the semester was over because the Cowboys called him up.  It came down to a kicking contest between him and whoever else was there.  Apparently they had each guy kick 3 kicks at a given yard line--one from the center and each hash.  The story I heard is that they both never missed until they got back to 55 yards.  Carlos missed one from there, so the contest was over and he lost the job.

Thats interesting.  Did he finish his degree or is that still left to do.  At one point I heard that he was advised to get his degree and that would help him break into an NFL team.  I have a hard time finding the connection between performing on the football field and having a degree.  I would like to know the % of people in the NFL who have a degree.

Carlos is left-footed, correct? I think that's the main reason he was with the Eagles in training camp because David Akers is left-footed. It's easier for the holder to get work. I highly doubt that Philly was considering cutting Akers, even if Carlos had been kicking really well. I would have to think a place kicker is one of the hardest positions to get a job and hold on to it. And you have "old-timers" that are able to kick well into their 40s. Look at Billy Cundiff, the Drake alum. His shoe is in the NFL Hall of Fame for kicking, I believe, 7 field goals in a game, but he's been trying to catch on with a team all year. It's just tough going for kickers when you've got proven NFL kickers who are looking for jobs.

Not sure on the % of NFL players w/ a degree, but a national guy on a KC sports talk show stated the New England Patriots and Indy Colts had the highest percentage of players w/ college degrees.  So, I guess its worked out for those teams to target athletes w/ degrees.

I'm not sure if he ever finished--I think he left in late October or early November, and I don't remember how long he was gone.

Floyd In Iowa City ...

Thanks for remembering Moco Mercer.  He was coaching at UD when I was a student there.

That reminded me of someone even earlier ... Sol Butler.  Football and track ... All Conference in both ... two time long jump winner at the Penn Relays and went to the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp.  Also played pro football with Jim Thorpe and the Canton Bulldogs.  Butler has a special display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton as one of the first African Americans in professional football.

Hats off to your father!  The men of that time were true heros.  If not for them we might not ever have been able to have this freedom to talk football and such.

Until about 3 months ago I never knew that my grandfather had landed on Omaha beach and served all the way through till the end of the war.  He was part of the DD tanks that went in and also helped Patton's Army break the seige of Bastonge.  He died when I was 10 and I wished I had talked to him.  My uncle said he never talked about it at all.  I think we will be losing much of that history in the next 10 years.  We are losing these heros every day.  God bless them for their service.

My fathers uncle landed on Iwo Jima in the second wave and was critically wounded while getting the remnants of his company moving off the beach, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  He never told anyone but his oldest grandson about the Bronze Star and we all thought he got some shrapnel in his butt for the purple heart.  That is the story he gave his wife and what she told everyone.  He never talked about it.

That is why groups like the American Legion and VFW are important, they are helping to preserve that history so that we never forget the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.
