Ok, conference questions...since I don't really feel like doing anymore work today...

What will be the conference standings for next season?

Who will Luther hire for their new coach?

Who is your schools rival and why is your school better than them?

Any schools have a coach on the hot seat?

Which teams improve next year?

Which teams take a step back next year?

Which teams stay right where they were next year?

2008 STANDINGS:

Coe /Central / Wartburg (tie)
Buena Vista
Simpson
Dubuque
Loras
Luther
St. Cecilia's of the Blind
Bye
Cornell (lose a heartbreaker 21-20 to Bye in overtime)

Luther's Coach:  No freaking clue.  If they were clever, they'd hire a young gun like an assistant from Mt. Union or St. Johns - someone with a winning tradition and winning attitude and bring in some fresh blood.

My school - Central.  Our rival - Wartburg.

Why is Central better than Wartburg?  I'll admit it's a pretty darn tough matchup.  Pella doesn't have all the Waverly amenities to offer (more than 1 bar, close proximity to 10,000 hot young teachers-in-training at UNI, and the All Sports trophies).  But Central knows football.  Wartburg is close and the gap is narrower than it was back 10 years ago, but the IIAC championship still runs thru Pella every year and if you're gonna win it, you've got to figure out how to beat Central first.  Plus, we got the drunken Beakes cheering at every home football game.

Coaches on the hot seat?  I think this year cleaned off the hot seat.  I'd say Cornell's coach if he doesn't win a few games pretty soon.

Teams improving:  I'd look for Cornell to improve now that this is the 3rd year in the same system.  They may even sneak up and knock off a Luther or a Loras.  I'd look for Coe to be a one loss team next year as well.

Teams on the decline:  I'd have to agree with The One and say Dubuque.  With the guys they're losing, I don't see how they can improve.

Teams staying the same:  Pretty much everyone else.

Sorry about the snow Doolittle.

Y'all ought to move down here where I'm at now - in Atlanta.  It was 78 here today.  Can you believe that?  I think I'll talk my family into coming down here for Christmas instead of making the trek back to God's Country up in North Central Iowa!

2008 STANDINGS

WARTBURG
COE
SIMPSON
CENTRAL
LORAS
DUBUQUE
LUTHER
BUENA VISTA
CORNELL

LUTHERS NEXT COACH

CHARLIE WEISS :o

OUR BIGGEST RIVALRY

It used to be Upper Iowa when we could have the Porno Bowl:  Cocks vs. Beavers :o
Now I would have to say Luther.  The game is always tight and we have had their number.  Always a good game.  I remember 4 years ago when the sun started shinning on a terrible day in D-town during a 4th quarter drive only to start raining when Luther got the ball back.

HOT SEAT

Cornell.  Dillion has to win more games next year and snap the coference loosing streak.  Whenever they take this splash look for a big load to be released from the players.

TEAMS WHO WILL IMPROVE

Simpson, I think Glogowski will bring a solid attitude to that program.  Loras, Ostey will not stay down long.  Cornell, they have a good coach and Im sure Puples kid is leading the charge with the offseason.

WHO WILL TAKE A STEP BACK

Central.  To many young players to be back at the top.  I look  for 08 to be a year of learning in Pella.  Dubuque.  Loosing Jackson and Mashburn will hurt.  I do not see them where they were this year.  Again a lot of learning I do not look for them to stay down long.

WHO WILL STAY THE SAME.

Wartburg if they get a rushing attack.  I look to see Coe to equal or better next fall.  They have a lot of good kids coming back.

Can anyone tell me why the burg take their Roster off the web so soon and does any of the other schools do that.

WB Fan:

Everyone else still has their rosters for 2007 up on their web sites.  I just checked.

Maybe they have a SID who is Obsessive Compulsive and is just really on the ball???

Sources have told me that some schools do this so that they do not look over recruited.  There is a theory that kids look at the rosters and compare their size to the size of kids in the program.  Then they compare there status with the playing time left for the kids on the roster.  With Wartburg being a large rostered team they might not want to freak kids out and shy them away to other schools based off surfing the net alone.  Again I think this makes some senese but might not be the truth.

I've got an interesting question to pose to everyone:

Which IIAC school would have been your 2nd choice to attend, if you couldn't have went to the one you did?  Why was it your 2nd choice, and what was the factor that made you go where you did?

I was just wondering as they used to leave it up on the site except for last year

I can't speak for myself but will try to speak for my kid. He 2nd choice probably would have been Central sense it came down to Wartburg and Central. He choose Wartburg cause he like the campus and like the Coach's they were honest with  him about playing time, not the Central wasn't but I don't think he hit it off with the Head Coach ( Coach Kac)

Never really thought about it too much. I was either Central or Iowa most of the way. I guess if I had to say another IIAC school I would say BV or Simpson.

I thought BV was too far out in the middle of nowhere (too far from Iowa City) otherwise that always seemed like a good place to go.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think Simpson would have been a good fit for me too. At times I felt Central was a little too conservative for my liking and Simpson seemed like a good time.

I never liked Wartburg, grew up close to Waverly and for some reason it just did not appeal to me whatsoever. I didn't want to go to school in Cedar Rapids or Dubuque so those were out of the question too.

I had a brother go to Central and I liked the winning tradition and it seemed like it was a pretty fun campus at the time I was in high school. I think the administration decided they needed to "babysit" us starting around my sophomore year there...different subject, now I'm just rambling...

Here is a shocker for everyone.  I would have chose to go to Dubuque.  They coaches spent a lot of time calling and I liked what the campus had to offer.  Ended up at BV but I guess I could have been a Spartian.  Doolittle think how diffent things could have been between us.

I took tours of Coe, Cornell and Dubuque.  I ended up applying to Dubuque, Cornell and Iowa.  I was accepted at all three of them.  I chose Dubuque because of their aviation program.  I wasn't getting recruited as an athlete (though I did play tennis 1 season at UD...don't ask me about my sorry record).

When I visited Coe, school wasn't in session and that probably played a role in how I looked at it.  I just never gave it a lot of thought.  I liked my tour of Cornell and believe I would have done well in the one course at a time deal they have.  In the end I chose Dubuque over Cornell because of aviation.  I have been a hawkeye fan since I was a wee little boy so I gave Iowa a lot of thought but decided the big campus probably would not have suited me.  As far as any other schools, I just never took the time to investigate them.  I am sure if I was in high school today with all the tools that are available to you with the internet I would have researched most every school in our state.

Dubuque was a great fit, close enough to home that I could get back when I wanted to but far enough away that I didn't leave school too often.  I had a great time in college and the friends I made there are still good friends of mine to this day.  I probably would be able to say the  same things about any other IIAC school if I had attended there.  I had friends from high school at just about every IIAC school and all of them loved their time at them.

As for my son it was between Wartburg, Central and Coe. He has friends playing at Coe and was impressed with the programs at Wartburg and Central. He went with his gut ans chosw Wartburg. He hasn't regretted his decision, but I think he would have fit in at any of the three.
