Speaking of off-season.  I think it will help all of us on here that the the IIAC now has spring practice.  It will let us talk about real football info.

Hopefully each school will put some stories and pictures up on their websites regarding the practices.

I know in the past we only had spring practice when we had a trip planned to play over seas.  I am sure many of the other IIAC schools did the same.  Does anyone know of any trips being taken around the Iowa Conference?  Or maybe a better question, which schools have planned trips that they take every 3-4 years?  Wartburg travels to Germany every few years I know...anyone else?

Central goes to Europe every four years I believe.  They went to Italy last year and I believe that it was Germany before that.

As for the non conference schedules go I know that Central was having difficulty finding teams to play.

Are all schools back in session right now?

Does having a J-term have a positive or negative affect on recruiting?
Or none?
WOndering if not having kids on campus during prime recruiting time has an impact.

Central starts this Monday.  I don't know if J term is a positive or a negative.

Victim of your own success.  Nobody wants to schedule a non-con game that is a sure loss!!!  ;D

Has your son found a coaching gig for next year yet???

I was thinking a good career path for him would be to go to Iowa City...2 years as a GA, 2 years as special teams coach, 3 years as QB coach, 3 years as OC, followed by an announcement that he is succeeding the retiring Kirk Ferentz!!!

I would LOVE to see Central schedule Linfield in the preseason. They don't have a full conference schedule and are always looking for opponents.

i've read stories of NWC, SCIAC, WIAC, Minnesota teams and Texas teams all saying it is nearly impossible to make out a schedule.  That was one reason Northwestern, MN played that double header a few years ago.  I read a story of Texas teams this past season playing each other twice...once as a conference game and once as a non-conference game.  They figured playing each other twice was better than having an open date.  I suppose it's a combination of competitiveness vs. cost.  It's not like Iowa paying Florida Atlantic 500,000 to come play in Iowa City.  It will cost Dubuque quite a bit of money to play at Redlands next season.  And from the competiveness side of things.  I would guess a lot of coaches in neighboring states wouldn't want to hurt their record by playing...and probably losing to a team like Central.  Tricky business finishing out the schedule it seems.

Thunderbolt

It seems a little odd that Central would have trouble finding games early in September. The Wiac teams are always looking for September games. UW Platteville is the only one with a tentative schedule up. They list at B.V. on September 6th.

That's a long way to go for a scrimmage. Perhaps it would be better to play a non-conference game. Those games, you see, are actually part of the season, therefore they are not preseason games.

walston.  i think it help recruiting in some ways and hurts in others.  j term is always a pretty relaxed time and it was made for fun nights.  so overnight visits for the kids always turned out to be a good time.  the reason i feel that the it hurts is because you do not see the campus at its full hustle and bustle and you can not pick up on the energy the campus offers.  no one wants to do to a lame duck.  it makes for a rush after the season and before signing day to try and lock down anyone thinking about playing a division higher.

Charlie Kohawk ...

What was it about Walner that has him still on your radar screen?
Charlie has a lot of pent-up anger for anyone who isn't affiliated with Coe.

Charlie was the guy that got picked on all of the time as a child and now he tries to get everyone back every chance he gets. Obviously he is still upset over the loss to UD this year and is certainly still sour grapes over suchow transferring to wartburg. He'll try to slip a jab at someone whenever he can.

To be honest, before I started reading this board 6 or so years ago, I really didn't have a strong opinion of coe college one way or another but after reading Charlie Kohawk for that length of time, makes me think the school is as trashy as their SID and neighborhood.

As for Joe Austin leaving for a Head Coaching job, congrats! That is what most every assistant aspires to be and will just help the Spartan cause when top assistants move on to bigger opportunities. He certainly did an excellent job running the offense but he was never in charge of recruitment. In fact, Jermar Jackson and others were there before Coach Austin was. Coach B has a solid core of assistants that have been with him for a long time so although anytime you lose a great "team" mate, it hurts, but someone will eventually step in and do fine I am sure.

Walner.......did not graduate from UD. It seems Walner did what he needed to be eligible to play one more year of football with hopes of playing after college. It also seems he didn't plan on finding a job that required a college degree. His decision was unfortunate....but don't kid yourself, Charlie's jealously strikes again here. COE AND every other IIAC college would have LOVED to have Walner Belleus. It takes the same academic requirements to get into to coe as a transfer as it does UD and the same requirements to be eligible to play football.

Good thing is, even without Walner, UD did better.........and going off Charlie's logic last year.....better then Coe.

Happy New Year!
Willie U

Willie I would agree that everyone would have wanted walner on their team for a year.  there was no doubt the skills that young man possesed.  I think CK did a bad job of stating that it is a sad situation when you see a young man playing d3 football and his only concern is the next level.  that isnt what this is about.  i feel the best thing the young men coming through these programs can give there coach is a picture with their degree in may of their senior year.

I speak somewhat from the heart on this one.  Having a college degree can change lives and change the course of family names forever.  I came from a family that only had 1 true college graduate and when I got my degree it changed my life and lead it to a place i never dreamed of going.  i would assume that even if walner would have won the gag trophy for his accomplishment the best he would have done is the AFL2.  Now Freddy is a perfect example of having a dream and playing it out.  But I think that these are two differnt types of people.

Were you a student @ WC when the LC- Wart b-ball games were scheduled on the weekends of LC's  j-term breaks? Talk about dead rivalry crowds.

Not that I recall, but I could be wrong.  The Wartburg-Luther games during my tenure were always very well-attended, but there was a marked difference between a game played on a Friday or Saturday night as opposed to one played on a Tuesday or Wednesday.  I didn't go up to Decorah my last year in school in '06, but one of my roommates who is from the Decorah area did, and said that the Regents Center was just slightly above dead.

Amen to affirming the distinction between non-conference games rather than pre-season games.

There are too many sports guys doing news, scores, etc., that seem more concerned with catchy phrases than with accuracy.  So we get over used, overdone lines such as "taking it to the house" and with one jerk here in Grand Rapids who describes getting into the end zone as "getting into the paint."

Now ... I've got that off my chest ... I can get ready for Grey's Anatomy and ER back-to-back.

He just got 85 letters and resumes sent out over break.  I hope one of those programs needs a good GA.  Do you suppose he could use all of you posters for references?
