the wing t-
that offense reminds me a little bit of shriners riding their bikes in circles and doing figure 8's...

if my memory serves correctly from football theory, didn't the U of Delaware start it?

I only played against it once in high school(MFL-Marmac) tried running it.  They were one of the worst teams we ever played  but they did manage to hit us for a few big plays.

does Sigourney still run it?  They are the only team in IA who I can think of that is actually good and runs it.  I know 3-4 guys my age that went to Sigourney and they were all good athletes and played on their championship team from the mid 90's.

I tend to think teams run it because they have less talent and maybe small lineman?

That or they run it because their QB had nothing to throw to on the outside or he has a glass arm.

Doesnt Augustana out of IL run this type of offense?

Klop Auggie runs the wing t like Cornell.

I don't think we ever had the football banquet before the break.
From the day the season was over, the coaches were on the road recruiting so they had time to plan it over break. Also needed time to get the highlight tape done as Wartburg has a fine tradition of killer highlight tapes.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Who doesn't.  I have been a part of 2-9 teams that can put together a stellar highlight video and wate 30 mintues of one's time.

Glad to see The Dutch schedule up, gives us a little FB in a boring month.

As far as the single wing goes, I've seen Sigourney-Keota run it in the playoffs a couple times.  Wasn't Hammes a spinback for them?  Some other teams may run it due to lack of talent or a coach just trying to be different, but I think S-K teams generally can go toe to toe with most anybody.

Their coach (Bob Howard) has moved on to Webster city I think, but I've heard SK is still running it, I'd think Webster City would  be running it too.

Yes Hammes was the spinback for Sigourney-Keota  and Yes Bob Howard is the coach at Webster City and I do believe they are running it too.

I think they have revived a dead program at WC too.  They just missed the playoffs this year I believe.

I'm baaaaack!

Hope you all had a good Holiday.

For the record it took Heys Jr 2 days to get back into Iowa due to fog, sleet, snow...Imagine that; weather.

Thunderbolt ...

Except that when UD played in Germany a few years ago ... that win didn't count in their record.  But in 2008 ... even though they are likely not to be in the hunt for the IIAC title or a playoff spot ... the outcome of their game with Redlands will count on their record.

For everyone
... on another matter.  On the North Region post, there was reference to single-wing football.  Since I played single-wing (wing back) in the late 50's, I wondered if any of the rest of you played with or against any single-wing in your football careers?  Any stories?

Though I am not quite fiddy...yet.

When I played youth football in FLA we played against two teams that ran the Single Wing; the Tigers and the Hurlburt Commandoes.

The Tigers were in our league and were the only team to run that offense.  They did the whole single wing thing indirect snaps, spin backs, reverses, unbalanced line.  Since we finished in the top 3 in our league we got sent to a "bowl" game against a team from another district.  The aforementioned Commandoes ran the single wing and dominated their league...having already been prepared, we were able to "stun" them.

I always thought that having a play or two from the single-wing, as a change of pace maybe on 2nd and short, would be a thing to confuse the defense.

Yes, the Rams run the Wing-T...I will say this though, there were several stretches where we utilized the spread...and not just when we were behind.

I have done quite a bit of back and forth on the merits of each with an undermanned team such as Cornell in the IIAC.

I look at Navy and Air Force and say to myself, yeah, the Wing-T is right.  But then you look at the Spread and see how the one on one matchups on the outside and short quick routes can negate size advantages up front giving a smaller squad at least a chance.  Of course you better have a triggerman and good receivers.

All I know is this...I feel that Bush is a quality athlete and has the skill set to be successful.  I am glad that we have him back at QB...and I feel better about that position than each of the two previous years.  The Rams lose 2 good receivers and most of the O-line to graduation.  We don't have a JV squad so Dillon's recruiting abilities will be put to the test and Cornell is a tough place to recruit to.

And yet...I am excited.

How many days is it again?

How many QBs are back next year ?

Not a lot of experience returning at QB. Pretty much just Simpson and Wartburg along with Bush. Thats assuming nobody violates the don't ask-don't tell policy.

Welcome back Heys. Hope the holidays were good to you. Two days sounds about right for me to travel that far, with good weather. How long does it usually take him?

Congrats to the Knights wrestling team as they took home another National Duals Championship this past weekend with a big win over UW-La Crosse.  Must have been pretty interesting with Miller and Malacek going head-to-head as coaches.

As for football talk, I ran the Wing-T in high school.  Definitely was beneficially since we did have smaller linemen.  Lot's of pulling for the guards and even the tackles a bit.  For the most part all of the assignments were pretty basic...as a center it was pretty much always block the man on you or block backside to the next D-lineman.  It was a lot different then anything we ran at Wartburg, which made for a confusing first few weeks at freshman camp (all those pre-season meetings helped fix that).

Busch Light

I think someone already mentioned it but SK still does run the single wing.  We ran it a couple of years ago when we were on our 5th QB who couldn't throw a ball to save his life.  From an offensive standpoint, it was not that confusing....just a lot of pulling and direct snap stuff.  This biggest problem that we had was finding a center who could snap it back to more than one person.   To me, the single wing is beneficial against a team that does not have very disciplined LB's/DB's who are not reading their keys very well.

Some of the good SK teams of the past could have run any "run first" offense and been successful.

235 days, 23 hours, 37 minutes to kickoff
Does that include the spring forward thing?
