On the who is the favorite in the IIAC for this fall.  I think clearly the favorite on paper should be the Knights.  They still had a young team last year and they should be senior heavy if my thoughts and math add up.  They were contenders with mostly sophs two years ago.  Contenders with a junior heavy class this year, so that makes them senior heavy this year unless some underclassmen come up and beat some other out.  With UD and Central losing much of their skill people to graduation and Coe getting a new coach I think that it puts Wartburg at the top.  Simpson has some players returning but they are in the boat with Coe and have not been productive yet in the win column.  BV and Loras will need to get the ship righted before they contend and they did have some seniors on the rosters as well.  Just because the Dutch and UD have some holes to fill dont count them short either, but the front runner should be the Knights IMHO.

Now here is the next question with the help of Doolittle +K for the schedule posting Dog.

Who has the toughest nonconference schedule?  I think that goes to the Knights as well.  Coe is a close second with UD, BV, and Central in the 3-5 spots.  Lakeland for Central being a contest, Redlands for UD, UW Pville for BV being the reason for them in those spots.  UW always a tough contest for any school playing the WIAC, Redlands for their near playoff appearance and Lakeland for having been there recently and competing for a spot in the playoffs.  The Knights having a MIAC team on the road and losing last year to them and playing St Norberts a playoff team every year is a great non conference matchup and Coe being a close second as Auggie is down this last year and has not been in the playoffs for a couple of years is always a tough opponent and GAC out of the MIAC could prove to give them fits as well.  This may change if the unknowns produce better teams like MUC ;D and or UWW ;D but that's my story and I am sticking with it.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am assuming that Unk means "unknown"???  If that is the case, the proper abbreviation would be UKN.  Just FYI.

ha another post closer to holding all of your Karma fates in the palm of my hand.

Remember my UD education  ;D ;D ;D

Flag the post!!!!!!!!  Doolittle acknowledges this finally  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Of course, was it my UD education or all the classes I missed hanging out at the Doghouse???  Judging by the success my roomates went on to vs. what I have ended up doing.  Hmm, you might have a pretty good argument it was my hanging out too much drinking beer than the education I COULD have received at UD...but who knows.

Ok, by 2008 assessment of UD.

Big question marks for me are what kind of offense will UD run with a new OC?  Also, Dubuque loses 4 seniors off of the O-line.  Players with years starting together with no known replacements.

QB loses 4 year starter Jermar Jackson...brings in Colton Hansen who will be a junior...sounds like he is the real deal.

RB loses two headed attack of Brandon Clayton/Edric Prim...no known replacements

WR/TE  UD loses Torrey Smith at WR but returns Ed McIntosh, Jean Metezier, Brennan Relaford, Chris Warder and Adam Burken

Dubuque should have a capable replacement at QB for Jackson with plenty of options to throw to...but, will he have enough time to throw to anybody if he is running for his life if the O-line does not develop???

On defense Dubuque returns 3 of their front 4 and next year should see the return from injury of 3 year starter Tim Collins.  I think the front 4 should be solid.

Dubuque returns Michael Brown and Orlando Walton but loses Floyd Pinkney, Chavis Youngblood, Mark Mashburn, Dondre Jenkins and Darrell Moore from the LB's and secondary.  Supposedly, Dubuque is deep with replacements for their secondary.

Overall I think the UD defense will be similar to last years D.  The key to the UD offense will be the O-line play and what style they try to play next year.  The offense has too many question marks to really give much of an accurate prediction.  With the new OC being a former WR coach I think they might try to get away a bit from the spread option and try to throw deep a little more.  Probably won't have much of an idea though until August when we see just who shows up for camp!!!

I will guess mid-table with around a .500 record should be expected from UD next year.  But who really knows this time of year.   ;D ;D ;D

I will give you a chance to give your shot at getting one step closer to karma.

BV Outlook for 2008.

We were a senior heavy team and will have some big shoes to fil.

OL/TE:  We loose Hobart, Schulz, McKee, and others
QB:  We lost Hawkins
WR:  We lost Kauffman, Stewart, and others
RB:  We have a nice sophmore who should be ready to step in an shoulder the load
DL:  Amick, Bredehoeft, and others gone
LB/DB:  Nystrom, Pierece, Sly, and others are all gone.

Case in point.  We have a lot of holes to fill and I think their might be some qaulity kids to step into these roles.  I am of the impression that there are a couple solid QB's waiting in the wings and some good young OL/DL prospects.

We have to get better upfront and run the ball on a more consistant basis.  On the other side of the ball its pretty easy.  Limit the big plays, get into 3rd and long situations, pressure the QB.  If we can do these things then we will be competitive.  I am not saying conference champs, but we will win some ball games.

I have not heard any reports on how recruiting is going for the boys up NW IA.  I did see that some talent was gobbled up by the NISC schools and Missouri D2 conference.  Lets hope that we limited the amount that went to Morningside, Briar Cliff, Dort, Waldorff, and Northwestern.

By the way, did anyone else take a look at who UIU brought in?  I believe that they only singed 9 guys.  What is up with this!

Sly will be back.  He had a med red from one of his previous seasons.  As far as recruiting goes, I haven't heard much.  I do know that one of the South O'Brien guys that Jay really wanted ended up signing with NW.  That's about all I've heard as far as official decisions.

I know this isn't football-related, but I thought of this today and thought it might be interesting to ask. Did anyone else on this board see the results from the Grammys and puke?  Amy Winehouse and Herbie Hancock were the big winners.  In (dis)honor of the Grammys, what are the best musical performances everyone on here has seen live?  With the geographic and generational diversity on this board, I bet we have some interesting answers.

My top five:

Rolling Stones/Blind Melon, Ames 1994 - I was 9 and my parents took me.  Probably the coolest thing ever.

Rolling Stones/Jonny Lang, Phoenix 2003 - With my parents again.  This time I knew what that funny smell was.

Lynyrd Skynyrd/Hank Williams Jr., Sioux City 2007 - Hank rocked, Skynyrd was pretty good.  Lots of white trash.

Toby Keith/Ted Nugent, Omaha 2005 - Ted shot an effigy of Saddam in the head with his bow.  'Nuff said.

Brad Paisley, Spencer Iowa 2004 - Just him with a guitar, no backing band.

Good to hear that Sly will be back.  The lord knows that kid went the heck and handbasket with injuries early in his career.

What is the deal with the SOB kid?  Did not like BV or did NW throw some money that to hard to walk away from?  What did he play?

I was at that Stones/Blind Melon concert at Ames!!!  We tailgated for what seemed like 12 hours or so.  A friend of mine that would later be the best man at my wedding drank too much and we pulled into someones driveway on the way home and he threw up!!!  I also saw the Stones with Lenny Kravitz in Madison earlier that summer.

Pink Floyd in Madison in 1994 would also rank up there for me.  It was raining and everybody had ponchos on which kept whatever it was they were smoking all to themselves!!!

U2 in Madison in 1992 was pretty good as well as U2 in Iowa City in 1987.

Aerosmith/Guns n Roses 1988??? in Ames

And I have to mention seeing the Wiggles at the Mark in 2004, in St. Paul in 2005 and in Ames in 2006 rank right up there.  They put on a good show and watching the look on our daughters faces when they come on stage is priceless.

Now hopefully the look on my sons face this coming fall when my dad and I take him to some IIAC games will be just as priceless!!!

Grateful Dead '92 Chicago: the Bulls are enroute to a championship and the game was being broadcast on the giant steal your face teletron behind Jerry.  3rd row and Chicago was hopping.

Aerosmith - Pump Tour '90:  Joan Jet and the BlackHearts opened, shame the hangers on of Motley Crue etc weren't understanding of what they were witness to as she was booed off the stage.  They're probably all now retro punk and claiming they were there when...  :-\

Public Enemy Tour '88:  the 22 most influential hip hop bands, primarily from the East coast put on a something like 6 hour show inside Market Square Arena, the location of Elvis last concert.  Big Daddy Kane in attendance with entourage decides to set up camp in the cheap seats around Macleod in attendance with a couple University of Michigan football recruits.

Metallica and Aerosmith '91: not exactly hair bands, but the ladies in the crowd had the hair band mentality.  Excellent camcorder material for a burgeoning LL Cool J wannabe.

The Show

Yep, Sly is back, that should help out the "D" quite a bit.

Two of our top prospects are deciding between BV and Central I believe.  They both fit the position needs for BV and in my opinion, would probably be 4 year starters.  Another one of our guys is going to try out Northwest Missouri State I think.  Another one may go the wrestling route instead of football.

Hopefully I'm going to make it up to campus next weekend and check in with Larry and see how it's going.

I saw The Boss with the E street band on the River and the Born in the USA tours. No warm up act and they played for over 3 hours.

I'm really dating myself when I say I saw the BeeGee's in 1978 at the peak of disco. a surprisingly good show.

Foriegner on the 4 tour was great too but I couldn't hear for two days after.
