Just returned from some time in Mexico ... and the # of messages to catch up on is amazing!  Maybe I should just "bag it" as we used to say ... and start fresh.

At any rate ... after two weeks of sun and 90 degree temps ... and then coming home to lots of snow and  much colder temps ... I say bring on Spring drills and get me ready for September ... Go IIAC and of course ...

Go Spartans!
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I'd love to have been a Wiggles family, but unfortunately I had the pleasure of Barney for two years.

On a side note, I saw Rodney Dangerfield in Des Moines around the time of Caddyshack. All he did was his album literally word for word, start to finish. To add to the spectacle, sitting next to me was none other than Jim Zabel.

Heys Jr. was a Barney fan...could this be the first purple influence that ultimately led to his wearing the purple for the Cornell Rams?   ???

Favorite Announcers.  All sports...include sportscasters on local radio.

In L.A. we had Chick Hearn for the Lakers and still have Vin Scully for the Dodgers.  Dick Enberg (Oh my!) started out doing UCLA basketball and California Angels games.

My favorite radio guy was Jim Healy on KMPC...any of you guys ever hear or heard of him?

Had the funniest schtick were he played sound bites collected over the years from all sports to play off his sport commentary.  Rapid fire, classic stuff.  One half hour of the funniest stuff in sports.

When I'd pick up Heys Jr. from school we'd listen...he even picked up the Howard Cosell classic, "Who goofed, I've got to know!" and would imitate it in his little 5 year old voice.

Nothing beat Jack Buck and Mike Shannon calling a Cardinals game.  And I am not even a Cards fan.  Growing up in the country outside I didnt have cable.........there was a Cardinals affiliate close so I got to listen to a lot of games that way.  Nothing make you a baseball fan more than if you grew up listening to the game on the radio.

I loved Bob Costas doing NBA games during Jordan's heyday as well.

Right on.  I used to have Howard's quote as part of my signature.

OxyBob and Fear The Poet on the SCIAC board are also big Healy fans.

I suppose it is February and there is not much football news so I guess to talk about music groups has its place.  But...at what do you think about the Roger Clemens, BB hearings?  At least it has to do with athletics if not our favorite sport.

footballdaddy

I'm still a big Pete Taylor fan. You could always tell hoe the Cyclones were doing by the tone of his voice. He was never afraid to say that they stunk when they did. A class act and very much still missed

As far as the baseball hearings, send the cheaters home and let their piles of money keep them warm. I think when Lyle Alzado died it scared the NFL straight.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

hopefully St. Olaf and Coe won't be competing for the same coach.  I fear that the Owls will be hard to compete with.

Charlie do you know if Staker wasn't interested or Coe wasn't interested?
He applied and (I think) would have been an excellent choice. However, he wasn't selected for an interview. Given John Chandler's track record, I'm not concerned.

Staker basically got stiffed by Coe.   Charlie, if John Chandler is such a genius then why has Coe never won the All-Sports trophy?  Why don't they have any better facilities as a result of his great relationship with all the wealthy alumni?

Staker could have got the job done in recruiting.

I would agree that Coach Staker got stiffed but I do think Chandler is a great AD.  He cares about the athlete which is what you want if you're a player.   His hands are just tied!   Coe really missed and opportunity here by not at least letting him interview.   What do you think will happen now if he stays on staff?

and Charlie, there is at least one of the candidates that is an O-Coordinator and has never been a head coach, can you guess which one?

You are probably right in the fact that Chandler has his hands tied.  I know he has worked hard to get the improvements to the facilities that they have upgraded recently.   Alumni like myself just get frustrated when Coe has such a great potential to be a contender in every single sport.

Favorite sports announcers.  Um I am going to show my allegiance rather quickly.

Harey Carey
Ron Santo
Steve Stone
Bob Ucher in the movie Major Leauge
Keith Jackson:  Just because I like hearing him say welcome to the grand daddy of them all.

One a side note, Heys you might know this guy, there is a local morning radio guy in Chicago that is outstanding.  Johnny B.  His morning show is sydicated in other cities around the nation, and I know he spent time in LA.  This guy can talk for 4 hours in the morning, not play a lick of music, and keep you laughing  your rear off in your car.

I think its a little odd that Staker didn't at least get an interview. I respect the guy greatly and I would have had to take a little different approach to what I thought about Coe.
Not a huge change, but a little.

So Purple...any word yet on next years football schedule???

It's down to just the Cornell and Loras schedules we don't know about.

Home to Grinnell and away to LaVerne I would think would make you happy  ;)

Oh yeah, got an interview set up with Coe yet???  :D

On the surface Grinnell and @ LaVerne (for the opportunity for the whole Heys clan to see Jr. play) would be OK...but...

In relative terms, I would say a bit of a step down competively from Alma and Northwestern.  Now I'm all for getting some wins, and stepping UP our non-league schedule might be a tad inadvisable considering our lack of success in league play.

I have a bit of confidence that this year the Rams can register an IIAC win or, dare to dream, 2 or 3.

So I would not be altogether unhappy to play our placement counterpart from the MIAC and maybe Grinnell just for old times sake (and the improved chance of not going winless)...rather than the last place WIAC team

This is not a dig at the Pioneers, but I think it's fair to say they are struggling near the bottom of an overall weaker league, so in relative terms, my opinion is that the Rams would be favored in a contest.
