There was some joking discussion last fall on the board that it was surprising MORE kids from the CIML didn't play D-III sports.  IIAC rosters are stocked with small city kids while there is a perception that if a kid from Des Moines doesn't get a scholarship to play that kid will just go to ISU or Iowa and give up on playing sports when they could have continued playing their sport while attending a D-III school.  We know there are kids that do go D-III but it does seem there are a lot more that could but just don't.

Walston Hoover

You beat me too it. There are a lot of big school kids on rosters, but more that easily could be that aren't.
Oh, and SEP wasn't state champs, they were runners up to Xavier. Also lost to Dowling earlier in the year (Had to throw that part in there)

Hey Walston, is recruiting done mainly with a high schools head coach or do position coaches like yourself ever get contacted by college coaches?  Just how much networking goes on out there???

Walston Hoover

Its pretty much all the head coaches. I pass along names to the Wartburg coaches throughout the season of our guys and guys we play against that I think would be a good fit, but that's about as far as it goes. I don't know what its like at other High Schools, but only a handful of our assistants are teachers in the building so when college coaches come in, we are not around.

That perception is also why DIII doesn't get the coverage it deserves in the Des Moines media. If the media would stop and think about how many local kids are playing in all the IIAC sports.they would give a lot more coverage. I'm sure many high school fans would like to keep track of players only if they knew where they were playing.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know what the CIML is.  My best guess is the Central Iowa Metro League.  Please educate me.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

footballdaddy

You are correct. It includes the Des Moines schools along with all the 4A central Iowa schools.

Aren't the Sioux City schools in it as well?

Walston Hoover

The Sioux City and Council Bluffs schools are MRC-
Missouri River Conference.
They all play CIML school in the nonconferenc.
CIML is technically made up of 3 conferences-

First off I know we had this discussion before but I will weigh in once again.

1.)  If the Des Moines Register, which is only good for one thing and that involves the outhouse, would showcase the IIAC more and dedicate a section promoting this it would be a differnt story.

2.)  If the IIAC would demand from the media that they get the attention they deserve then things might be differnt.

3.)  The IIAC might want to think about holding regional showcases to bring in all the IIAC teams, and have kids work out and have a little face time with coaches.

4.)  It takes a special kid to come from an area of 750,000 people and all the things to do in that area, and move to Storm Lake, Dechorha, and Dubuque.  It takes a person to come there and really like it as I did.  The kids have to have something outside of football, as I had acres and acres of hunting land at my disposal when I was in SL.  So even if I hated football and the school, which are both false statements, I would have stayed just to duck hunt in the fall and pheasent hunt in the winter.

Put it this way.  My uncle played football and graduated from Wartburg.  If I had not seen old pictures of him, or had him take me to Knight games as a kid, I would not have known who Wartburg was until I was well into high school.

If you get those transfers and especially if you get Snead...You have a fine team next season.

I have seen Snead play...The kid is a legit.

Favorite sports announcers.  Um I am going to show my allegiance rather quickly.

Bob Ucher in the movie Major Leauge

Juuust a bit outside, tried the corner and missed...

How can these guys lay off pitches this close?

I may have to go dust off the old VHS of that one now!

capn crunch

when was it announced that ginn was going to Grand Valley?  Wednesday?   that's great for him.
I'm calling wheels friday to find out what's going on.  it's turning into WB east now @ Grand Valley.
Willis knows their current head coach pretty well i think and that was mitchell's ticket there initially.

As far as NC Weselyan, this was their 4th year of football  and they won on the road as a #8 seed  the first week.

even though they were hammered by Trinity(worse  than the WB-PLU 99')  making the 2nd round of the playoffs with your first Sr class(ever)  is very impressive.

speaking of playoffs, when is the last time Loras, UD, BV, or Luther made the playoffs?

If you think the Register needs to publish more stores about the IIAC, do something about it -- write a letter to the editor, email the sports staff, call in to one of the forums -- make your voice heard. Create a "demand" for the product and they will probably answer. Right now it's pretty easy for the Register to ignore the small schools because few people seem to care.

But please, use spell check first....."Dechorha"..... Are you serious?  ;)
