Word on the street is that WB is trying to not recruit as many freshemn for next season. I beleive that this year's freshmen class has lost over 50% of those who started camp in August.

My opinon is that a "walk on" wouldn't be chased off, but would not receive the attention that a recruited player woud receive.

'Daddy,

I think a recruited player,  in general, will always receive the attention and the reps over a walk-on.  At the D-1 level this is more true since the typical walk-on doesn't measure up, though there are exceptions.

At the D-3 level, I think coaches are happy to invite anyone to walk-on.  A walk-on is likely to get a longer look, if only because the gap between them an a recruit could be far less.

As a former coach, it is awful hard to deny talent even when, in the form of a walk-on, it is far superior to the recruited.

I want to win games, players want to win.  At the D-3 level, wherever you can get players who qualify scholastically, I would expect you welcome them in.

Look at UW-W...

Danny Jones wasn't recruited, he was for all intents, a walk-on.  Albeit a walk-on with some heavy duty credentials, but a walk-on nonetheless.

He was given a chance to compete.

This was at one of the top D-3 programs...I think our schools, somewhat further down the chain, would have a similar open door policy.

You never know who might walk through....

I dont know about the rest of the conference but the new coaching staff over at Simpson is going to do big things this season. Simpson has the majority of their offensive starters returning and most of their defensive starters are coming back as well. The storm are going to be a powerful force in the IIAC the coing fall.

Okay then.

How about your Storm preseason capsule...Top returning players, new impact players, season outlook and what2watch4.

It would be cool to get everyone's early read on the upcoming Spring and Fall.

hopefully St. Olaf and Coe won't be competing for the same coach.  I fear that the Owls (Oles) will be hard to compete with.

I have heard some rumblings around Olaf.  The position was officially opened on Thursday.  I have heard a rumor that it will be someone new to the program.  It does not sound like any of the assistants will be considered.  I think some of the assistants will be retained for a variety of reasons.  I have also heard that the coach will likely come from outside the MIAC, and likely DI or II assistant.

Any update from Coe?

I am sure that they are getting some heat from the administration.  I have had this talk with some of the mucky mucks in Storm Lake and that was a main concern in regards to large freshman classes.

You spend a lot of money to get these kids into the school, get the rooms set up, get them registered for classes, bring them in for preview days.  They do not want to loose these kids after the first 16 weeks of their college career.

Plus it does not look good to have a low freshman attenuation rate.  I do not think that WB is having any image issues in academia, I see this as something more internal.

Storm I think you got a good one down there.  Coach Glogowski interviewed and was a finalist for the BV job a couple years ago.  The players raved about him after they had a chance to meet/interview.

I had the chance to talk with him for a minute and his energy was outstanding.  I look forward to seeing how it works out.  Just as long as you come up on the wrong end against the Beavers ;D

As I look outside at ANOTHER snow storm...and a friend just told me he read there is a possibility we could get snow into May this year...I'm starting to think we've had it all backwards trying to talk Purple Heys into moving the family unit to Iowa.  If I have to clear snow from my walks and deck 3 more times this winter I might check into how much Purple would charge to rent out Heys Jr's old bedroom to a family of 5!!!  I have a feeling he would charge $33,250 for a 1 year lease!!!

The bidding starts...

Newly renovated 1 bedroom with direct acces full bathroom; kitchen and laundry privileges, shared utilities, good school district, local parks and beaches provide YEAR-ROUND sports and recreation.  Nice neighborhood close to local shopping.  Backyard Hot Tub.

Oh, did I mention?  63o and Sunny today.

8)

Heys I will bid 100,000 Campbells Soup Lables (for your kids who are still in school), .50 cents, and the ability to change your oil/clean the house.

I would think at the DIII level that the in state talent at least has been evaluated more extensively that would a DI because they typically get the 2nd best player if DI gets the best. In my experience, when a school contacts a high school, they ask who the coach thinks who can play at the next level. Then the school evaluates that player. All IIAC schools have a place on their websites that allow a player to send in information to each coaching staff. I don't think that there are many cases of a completely unknown player showing up for camp unanounced. I'm sure if one did, they would be looked at, but I think they would have to be something very special right away to get the same attention that a player would who has been analyzed by the coaching staff all off season.

Heys, I agree that a coach will use whatever tools he has, but I think an unrecruited player has a big hill to climb.

Now onto D-III recruiting.  You always hear coaches saying they will know more about their recruiting class when August camp starts and they find out just which players actually show up.  Now, coaches recruit kids and hope that they actually show up on campus for the start of football practice.  My question is, can a kid show up that wasn't recruited by the coaching staff and ask to practice with the team???  Will they take all comers or will they tell the kid they don't know anything about him so too bad???

Dog bad news on the snow.  Looks like we are going to avoid the snow over here in the windy city.  But I have heard that if that rain/snow line drops we could be in for quite some time.

Heys its 50 in Chicago this morning so 63 sounds a bit cool for SD.

All freshmen get JV PT at Wartburg. I think it's more realizing what it takes to become a starter in the IIAC. Some have trouble going from being at the top to having to put in a great amount of work to get back to that level in college. Also some must realize they're in over their head and quit fotball but stay in school.

I also think it's a logistical nightmare to have 150 players in a facility designed for 100.
