As I look outside at ANOTHER snow storm...and a friend just told me he read there is a possibility we could get snow into May this year...I'm starting to think we've had it all backwards trying to talk Purple Heys into moving the family unit to Iowa.  If I have to clear snow from my walks and deck 3 more times this winter I might check into how much Purple would charge to rent out Heys Jr's old bedroom to a family of 5!!!  I have a feeling he would charge $33,250 for a 1 year lease!!!

The bidding starts...

Newly renovated 1 bedroom with direct acces full bathroom; kitchen and laundry privileges, shared utilities, good school district, local parks and beaches provide YEAR-ROUND sports and recreation.  Nice neighborhood close to local shopping.  Backyard Hot Tub.

Oh, did I mention?  63o and Sunny today.

8)

Heys I will bid 100,000 Campbells Soup Lables (for your kids who are still in school), .50 cents, and the ability to change your oil/clean the house.

I'll see those labels and raise you a Wartburg car flag and a Nike Knights hat sold to me by a very pretty softball player.

Word on the street is that WB is trying to not recruit as many freshemn for next season. I beleive that this year's freshmen class has lost over 50% of those who started camp in August.
Low ACT or no PT?

All freshmen get JV PT at Wartburg. I think it's more realizing what it takes to become a starter in the IIAC. Some have trouble going from being at the top to having to put in a great amount of work to get back to that level in college. Also some must realize they're in over their head and quit fotball but stay in school.

I also think it's a logistical nightmare to have 150 players in a facility designed for 100.
You are right all of the players were HS stars. Some are just not college players, and they find this out quickly there 1st year

It would be cool to get everyone's early read on the upcoming Spring and Fall.

I had to go all the way back to page 826...which was only from only 6 days ago for my Spartan preview...

Ok, by 2008 assessment of UD.

Big question marks for me are what kind of offense will UD run with a new OC?  Also, Dubuque loses 4 seniors off of the O-line.  Players with years starting together with no known replacements.

QB loses 4 year starter Jermar Jackson...brings in Colton Hansen who will be a junior...sounds like he is the real deal.

RB loses two headed attack of Brandon Clayton/Edric Prim...no known replacements

WR/TE  UD loses Torrey Smith at WR but returns Ed McIntosh, Jean Metezier, Brennan Relaford, Chris Warder and Adam Burken

Dubuque should have a capable replacement at QB for Jackson with plenty of options to throw to...but, will he have enough time to throw to anybody if he is running for his life if the O-line does not develop???

On defense Dubuque returns 3 of their front 4 and next year should see the return from injury of 3 year starter Tim Collins.  I think the front 4 should be solid.

Dubuque returns Michael Brown and Orlando Walton but loses Floyd Pinkney, Chavis Youngblood, Mark Mashburn, Dondre Jenkins and Darrell Moore from the LB's and secondary.  Supposedly, Dubuque is deep with replacements for their secondary.

Overall I think the UD defense will be similar to last years D.  The key to the UD offense will be the O-line play and what style they try to play next year.  The offense has too many question marks to really give much of an accurate prediction.  With the new OC being a former WR coach I think they might try to get away a bit from the spread option and try to throw deep a little more.  Probably won't have much of an idea though until August when we see just who shows up for camp!!!

I will guess mid-table with around a .500 record should be expected from UD next year.  But who really knows this time of year.

I know as of about 3-4 years ago, the coaches didn't necessarily want huge numbers of guys coming in, but you can't turn anyone down, and when 1 guy is a player and he comes with 3 or 4 guys from a school on a visit (That was pretty typical in my day), they get the same recruiting pitch and you end up with several of those guys that I'm not going to go out and say the coach doesn't want, but he wouldn't have been a prime target in the first place.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Just another day in paradise here too Doolittle. Winter storm warning until midnight, freezing rain should turn to snow with 6 to 12 inches expected. I was begining to worry my snow shovel would rust.

Speaking of recruiting this makes me think about my first visit to BV.  Osty came down and talked to me in the HS and asked me to come up and take a look.  I really had no idea who BV was, all I knew that they were decent and looked like a nice school.  I drove up there without my parrents on a school day because they had to work, and they did not think I was serrious.  They just figured I wanted to get out of school for the day.  I first should tell you that since I was 16 I had made the bold statment about leaving IA for college.  Side note:  They hauled me all around the midwest to see other schools.  Back on track now:  Once I got on campus it was hard not to like it.  A guy just felt at home.  The funny thing is I told two other teammates about it and they visited, one ended up going there as well.  Funny how a school that you did not give a lot of attention to right away turns out to be your alma matta (sp).

The HS wrestling tourney concluded this past weekend, and I am proud to say that we had two place winners from my high school.  We had a kid finish second at 152 and we had a state champ at 160.

Anyone else have their boys fair well?  Anyone out there have a son who faired well?  Looks like Waverly Shell Rock put a serrius monkey stomp on the rest of the 3A field.

Thanks for your assessment of the 2008 season for UD.  I'm thinking Coach wouldn't have scheduled the trip to Redlands if he didn't think the Spartans had a chance.  Who wants to go all that far just to be embarrassed?

Maybe Coach thought scheduling Redlands would enable you to talk your wife into letting you visit your home town AND see a Dubuque game  ;D

Or, maybe Dubuque is recruiting Heys Jr's little brother and playing Redlands would allow him to see the Spartans in person!!!

Or, perhaps they are trying to recruit SoCal a bit heavier now and are telling recruits to come check them out and see for themself what kind of team Dubuque has!!!

Or, this could be a recruiting tool used on last years recruits...come to Dubuque and you get a trip to sunny SoCal

I personally think they scheduled the trip so DBQ1965 could get home and see a game.  Do you think you could talk your wife into moving to Dubuque and you could become the team chaplain???  Get to travel with the team to all games and stuff like that???

What I think will be the best part of the Spartans trip out west is the look on Mrs Heys face as she comes home to find about 50 Dubuque fans crashed in her yard...a row of kegs set up, tossing a football around and grilling a bunch of red meat.  Then they tell her: "Your husband told us we could crash here for the weekend...it's ok, we brought booze!!!"
