Isn't Briar Cliff's football program relatively new (and small in comparison?) I know that Northwestern has a thriving football program in Orange City. According to their website, they make a playoff run every few years or so.

Are any of these colleges (Northwestern, Dort, Briar Cliff, etc.) really recruiting threats to BV (or anyone else)? In looking at the colleges themselves, they seem to recruit a different sort of student athlete.... That feels like saying that Graceland competes with Central for recruits because of their geographic proximity. I could be wrong, but I just don't see it happening a lot.

Just checked out the rosters at Northwestern, Dordt, Briar Cliff, and Morningside.  There are a lot of kids from Carroll, Denison, West Lyon, Central Lyon, Lemars, MOC-FV, IKM, Galva-Holstein, etc., etc., etc.  Most of these places are within a 1-2 hour drive of BV, and they all have had some level of success in recent years.  BV has had quality players from many of these schools in the 5 years I've been intimately familiar with the program.  BV typically appeals to and attempts to recruit farm kids from small high schools who want to play ball and still be close enough to go home and help on the farm when they want.  When three schools within a short distance add scholarship-offering programs and start recruiting the kids right out their back door, you better believe it impacts the recruiting of BV and every other school in the area.

Like Klop, I know many people who have played at the NAIA schools in the area.  The idea that they're full of pious church addicts who would never fit in at BV/Wartburg/Coe/etc. is largely unfounded.  I've attended keggers at Northwestern where half the campus was present, and most of the people there were no different than my friends at BV.  Mostly they were kids who wanted to play ball and liked the idea of being able to head home for the weekend without trekking halfway across the state--the same reasons a LOT of kids choose BV.  Part of the allure of D3 football is that you're playing in front of a "hometown" crowd who choose to support their local school instead of heading to Iowa City for a game.  If a kid can play at a quality school where his family & friends can attend games with ease, it's hard to not want to play there.

Keep in mind that those schools play in the same conference as U of Sioux Falls (this year's NAIA national runner-up), and Morningside and NW routinely give them a run for their money and even beat them on occasion.  The NAIA schools in the GPAC are of a much different breed than the likes of Billy Penn and Graceland, and a few of them would be pretty competitive in the IIAC.

My sources say they interviewed 5 guys and all of them were very good candidates. I have a source very close to Hefty, that basically said if he did interview, it wasn't done CR.
Who do your sources say the others are?

When is Coe going to announce or just keep it a big secret

Alfredeneumann

I think they will wait until "Chrunchberry day" Usually Wednesday.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

My sources (imaginary friends) tell me the delay in announcing the new Coe football coach is they are still actively going after Purple Heys.  The story goes they have upped the amount of free Crunchberries the family would recieve to Heys liking.  The younger kids are now ok with living in a cold weather environment.  Mrs. Heys would love to live closer to her eldest son and knows how much Purple loves coaching.  The last hold up is Mrs. Heys isn't too keen on the 300% pay cut the family would take for Purple to get back into the coaching ranks!!!  And, you know, San Diego isn't too bad a place to live and all!!!

If Heys gets the job, look for him to implement a defensive scheme that allows the Tight End to run free down the middle of the field. Similar to the one Luther used against Wartburg.

The Council for Aid to Education released their yearly fundraising totals for Iowa schools.  Fun to look at to see how IIAC schools stack up against NAIA schools and others in the state.  I found it interesting that UNI is in line with many of the IIAC schools!!!

I am SURE he would use that scheme when Cornell would play Coe  ;D

Since its a snow ladden morning, and I have no desire to start my day, I am going to start taking bets.  The legal tender will be crunchberries.

How many more days will it be before Coe announces their new head coach
Over/Under: 3 days.

Coe's new head coach will have IIAC coaching experience
Line:  3-1

Coe will win 7 games in 2008 under the leadership of the new head coach.
Line:  5-1

The betting counter is now open.  Remember:  Incase you loose your bet, Mickey the loan shark will be around to collect bets :o

Does it matter if the coach was an assistant in the IIAC or not in the bet?
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Two hour snow delay means I'm not working yet or motivated to in another hour anyway.  The Coe leaders did say they wanted to name a coach by the end of the week...they just didn't say which week!!!

over/under 3 days...I will say a push...friday will be the day they announce.

I will say the new coach will NOT have IIAC coaching experiance

I think Coe will win 7 games next year.  Coe will become the Rockford of the IIAC...Rockford has gone 7-3 five straight seasons.

In case I lose all my bets let it be known to Mickey the loan shark that my house is guarded my Millie the wonder beagle who has a vicious streak a mile wide.  Step on my property uninvited and she is likely to lick your face and roll over to have her tummy rubbed!!!

Klopenhiemer

Millie and Mickey should have fun then.  Mickey is a 50lb English bulldog who sprints to your feet and them demands constant attention ;D

The Show

The nice thing about the school system...2 hour late starts!

I'll go with the Under on the 3 days, no head experience, and a 5-5 season.

Anyone have any creative snowmobile deterrents? Back and shoulders didn't appreciate chiseling the packed snow off of the sidewalk this morning as some moron(s) decided to ride their snowmobile down the sidewalks on my street.  (Pretty sure there's a city ordinance against this too.)  First thought was a zip line, but that's a law suit waiting to happen!  ;D

The county used to groom a snowmobile track through our ditch.  When we called the county to tell them we really didn't want them doing this they told us the county had the right of way to use ditches for public access.  When we asked if a snowmobiler broke his neck while riding in our ditch would the county be liable for his injuries they told us no the wouldn't because the snowmobiler would be on our property!!!  They stopped grooming trails in the ditch a couple of years later.

Good thought on not using the zip line...unless going to prison appeals to you!!!
