Mrs. Heys was getting tired of the monotony of 70 degree, Sunny days...like today.  Heys III doesn't want the pressure of being able to play baseball outdoors in January.  Plus, Daughter Heys will dominate the IIAC Women's High Jump...having already jumped 5'7" as a Junior in High School.

;D

Just checked the IIAC site for the T&F Indoor Championships.  Women's High Jump winning height: 5'1".  In the CA State Championships the opening height is 5'3".  Senorita Heys' HS coach is telling her that she should pass until the bar hits 5'4" in duals this year.  Any IIAC schools with a Hot Tub full of financial aid money...she's half Cuban and qualifies as a Latina...perfect for your diversity initiatives.  She can play some hoop too...@ 5'11" she can dunk a golf ball...not that that means anything other than it was a fun challenge in practice.

Not convinced of the hire.. A great guy, and probably a great coach, but not the right hire in my opinion. Time will tell I guess.

Congratulations to new Head Kohawk Steve Staker!

Walston was right all along!!!

I think this is a good addition and I could really see them setting this up for the younger Staker to take over in 5 years or so...but this really looks like a case of "oh crap, everyone is turning us down...let's take Staker"

the current monmouth head coach was also considered, turned down because of money (favorite of first rounders, from what i heard)
hefty was considered, turned down because of personal reasons
seth wallace was offered, turned down because of personal reasons (would have had to give up his GA at Iowa, only has one year left) --would have been a good choice as well
among some others (old assistants under Raeburn at Coe)  one from St. Ambrose and one from Truman State

we will probably never know what the circumstances on why he was not initially considered

staker is a good hire

Congrats to Coach Staker on the new job

Sorry Heys you over played your hand.  Must not have been a strong enough one in the end.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

It makes sense as to why the recruits they had on the line considered staying put, with Staker being the recruiting coordinator.

It seems to be a good "Within the Family" hire...but it certainly doesn't make for great headline copy.

Congrats to Coach Staker...there is a lot to be said for continuity.

Staker and I have the same first name...I thought for sure they were going my way...when they said, "Steve is our new head coach."

GREAT HIRE!!!
I'd like to say "I told you so" all along but they threw me for a loop by not having him in their list of finalists ???
Coe saves themselves some money by promoting from within.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Interesting hire. Congrats to both Coe and Staker -- I don't think it will be a bad fit for Coe. Staker has quite the resume for a high school coach.

It's interesting that Coe's release pointed out that "age didn't matter." My thought while I was reading the release was that this guy is already in the twilight of his career at age 64....

that was the one reason why i thought both he and coe would go different directions (all though jopa and bowden are in their 80s).  coe will probably be on the look out for a new offensive coordinator because that was raeburn's side of the ball, staker coached the defense.  coe shouldn't be hurt at all on the recruiting side.  it will be interesting as to what they do about  o-coordinator.

It's good to see Coe finally has a head coach.  I don't know much about Staker other than what I read in the press release.  I would have thought they may go for someone a bit younger...but he claims it won't matter, could see him around for another 10 years.  I agree it might be a good way to move his son up into the head coaching position in a few years.  I think it will benefit the Kohawks to have a guy who knows what it takes to have a winning program at Coe.
