Interesting hire. Congrats to both Coe and Staker -- I don't think it will be a bad fit for Coe. Staker has quite the resume for a high school coach.

It's interesting that Coe's release pointed out that "age didn't matter." My thought while I was reading the release was that this guy is already in the twilight of his career at age 64....

Staker is no Gagliardi.

Though there hasn't been a "He's the one we wanted all the time." statement from Coe, why did it take a month and a big interview process to promote from within? With Coe nation being tight-lipped about it, and the rumors of the job being turned down possibly  two or three times, is there someting about the job that isn't being talked about? Wether it's dollars, commitment,or whatever, I get a funny vibe about this. I've also heard a couple of players that are not returning due to their experience there. Maybe I'm reading too much into the hire, but something seems a little off.

but this really looks like a case of "oh crap, everyone is turning us down...let's take Staker"

That's how it smells to me too.  I could be wrong, but I'm going to guess that losing Phantz and bringing in a 64 year old head coach will not have a positive impact on Coe's recruiting efforts.  It probably won't be noticable this year, but I think down the road there could be a downward slide.

There hasn't been any statement from Coe -- who does their PR? D3Football.com usually breaks this kind of news, and their front page isn't carrying the release. They haven't even received a news release from the college, according to the news release page.

Pfantz has not been there for 2 years now (coached at a small hs in western ia)  Staker is a good recruiter as well.
There were different reasons the job was turned down by other candidates (money from one)  the other two candidates that were offered turned down for personal reasons.  i am glad hefty turned it down, from what i heard he ran things more like a high school then a college program.  it's not like staker is a bad choice for Coe.  Maybe it was the other way around, maybe he was the person who turned down an interview at the beginning, we will never know.

This is a great a hire in regards to the Staker family story at Coe which is a wonderful and unique story.  Congratulations to Coe for staying in the Coe family as well.  I think game days will have a great atmosphere, and I hope this will bring many more alums back to the games.  I believe his son in law is the head baseball coach also.

Go Kohawks!!!!!
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I did not mean to imply that he was only that his age does not preclude him from this spot.

I found this very odd as well.  D3 does a great job about covering this type of thing.  I doubt if Coe even gave Pat a story.  I could be wrong but from the press release I would assume that it was typed up over the weekend and it could have been given to Pat and d3 over the weekend as well.

The age thing is really the only thing that worries me for Coe.  I'm not saying people past 40 can't be successful or run programs, but I would think it would be much harder at 64 to take over the helm of a program.  If you are a Gagliardi or a Joe Paterno, you have history and you have won a ton...as long as you can keep winning at that age, no reason to not keep them around.  But if you are finishing 5-3 in the conference the last two years and have powerhouses like Central and Wartburg to go up against, I think it will be tough for someone that is at retirement age to bring that program to the top....and I would assume they wanted to hire someone who could get them there ASAP.

***I can already see the replies now so I will throw my disclaimer in here.  I am not saying a 64 year old man can't make Coe IIAC champs.  I would love to see him prove me wrong, more power to him...it would definitely say alot about him as a coach***

staker will have an inside shot at admissions (probably more then when Raeburn was there) for the simple fact that his daughter works in the department (maybe pull a few more strings for dear old dad)

What is her roll in Admissions? are we talking VP or just Admissions counselor?
(Don't mean to demean admissions counselors, just suggesting they don't have as much pull as a VP)
