It's a great day for Coe and, frankly, the Iowa Conference. I've run into a few players and there seems to be unanimous optimism about this turn of events.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

At this point in the search I think Staker is ther perfect fit.  They can really push the family aspect in the recruiting business.  Telling a recruit he sent all 5 of his kids to Coe before he even worked for the school plus having a son on staff and a daughter in admissions.  Add to that the coaching contacts he has in the state if he can get a good OC I think Coe will be just fine.

What is her roll in Admissions? are we talking VP or just Admissions counselor?
(Don't mean to demean admissions counselors, just suggesting they don't have as much pull as a VP)

she is just a counselor, but every bit helps

staker will have an inside shot at admissions (probably more then when Raeburn was there) for the simple fact that his daughter works in the department (maybe pull a few more strings for dear old dad)

I find it hard to believe she'll be working that much harder now than she was when he was an assistant.  If having two family members on the football staff in any regard isn't enough to make her pull some of those strings, then I don't know how much difference having Staker as the head man will make.

How many potential athletes are unable get into an iowa conference school?  Maybe I'm crazy, but:
1) It's not very difficult to get accepted/qualify
2) If you had a GPA too low and ACT/SAT score too low, are you really looking at an Iowa Conference school?

I'm curious, are there throngs of athletes being denied admission to IIAC?

Probably not so much acceptance as financial aid.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Though there hasn't been a "He's the one we wanted all the time." statement from Coe...

There hasn't been any statement from Coe -- who does their PR? D3Football.com usually breaks this kind of news, and their front page isn't carrying the release. They haven't even received a news release from the college, according to the news release page.

That was my feeling. If Staker was who they wanted, when they wanted him,and with his great credentials, I would think that Coe would make a bigger noise about his hiring.

OK....who makes the decision on the amount/form of aid?

Coe is getting increasingly harder to get in to.  not all iiac schools hold the same standard of entrance.  there are many people who got into coe in the last 5-6 years that probably wouldnt get in if they were applying, with the same credentials, this year

If this is true and I have no reason to believe it is not, then maybe that is why some other's turned Coe down.

Well four years ago when the process started my son went to the scholarship days at Wartburg and Central.  He had interviews with current students and profs.  From there I think the results went before a committee if I am not wrong and they decided how much FA he was awarded.  I am sure the coaching staff had some imput on it as well but I believe his grades and ACT scores had an effect as well as the interview.

From what I remember, it takes at least a 20 ACT with a class rank in the top 50% for about all IIAC schools. I believe UD may be a little easier to get in to.

Also, admissions is only one component of financial aid. Academic standing and scholarship days count for most. A coulselor would have to really work to get around standards and probably only one or twice a year.

a 20 act would be on the far low end for coe in the last 2 years of average act for incomming freshmen (27 or 28)

This is all kind of unfair to Coe and Coach Staker...they deserve their due for a good hire.

If I may, I would like to shed some light on the process and how it "actually" turned out.

First, I blame myself for the stop/start/stop as to who Coe would name as Head Coach.

Chandler and I had framework of a deal in place..to the point that they even had begun stenciling "Steve" on "my" office door...but then we had a disagreement on the guaranteed amount of Crunchberries and the Count Chocula-based incentives and the deal was off.

Now that Chandler is a shrewd dude; and he recognized an opportunity when Steve "Gramps" Staker shuffled by...I saw the look in Chandler's eye and I knew the deal was off, I was out, Gramps was in, and Coe didn't need to get the scraper to restencil the coachs' name on the office door.

:D :D :D

Staker's daughter is married to the Head baseball Coach.  He has been their ten years.  I am sure that nothing is going to change now that her dad is the Head Football Coach.

The big question is when is the first grandchild going to start playing Kohawk football?  I hope Steve is still their for that.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!
