It's hard not to be a Bret Farve fan. Love or hate the Packers, you had to repect and admire him. I loved him because even after 17 seasons, you could tell he was still 8 years old playing in his back yard. I'll miss watching him.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect the passion with which he played the game. Any day a legend and unanimous first ballot HOFer leaves the game is a sad day in the game of football.

Good for him for going out on his own terms.

Exactly, well said.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Farve's retirement also means the elimination of the cushiest job in football, which was whoever his back up was. The #2 and #3 QB's never had to bring their helmets to the game because Farve wasn't coming out. :D

that would be Aaron Rogers from Cal (he got drafted the same draft as Alex Smith of the 9ners)  He actually played good against the Cowboys when Farve got hurt during the regular season

Technically they have an QB coach, but he isn't good enough to call the offense.  i could see tyler (his son) taking over the offense in another year or so maybe.

They need to get a guy in there for the X's and O's part of coaching.  That was Raeburn's defense that he put in that Staker was calling.  I'm on the fence still, I'm excited about it, but we will see if it works out.  I hope it does cause Staker is a hell of a guy and coach.

I hope Staker does well also because anything that makes the IIAC stronger will help us when the playoffs come around. I still can't help but believe that going a month without an "official" head coach has hamperd recruiting. It's hard enough going against Central's record,Wartburg's facilities, Dubuque's building boom, and the like with a head coach. They must have done some fantastic recruiting to get commitments without one.

I don't know for sure or not yet, but I've heard from a couple of people today that Yordi at Wartburg was found innocent of any charges that had been brought against him this morning.  I'm glad for his sake that it's over, and maybe we all shouldn't have been as hard on the Wartburg staff for "taking their time" to hand out a punishment last fall.

Well said. I've been a Packer fan since birth....it is going to be such a different fan experience now without him in Green Bay. I respect that he is leaving on his own terms. Good for him.

This would be very welcome news, if true.  I haven't seen anything on the Courier or KWWL's websites yet, so I'm holding off until I hear anything for sure.  Not that I don't trust you, Former Ram.

As far as Favre goes, I can't blame the guy for calling it quits.  I'm not sure there's that much more he could accomplish in the NFL, short of winning another Super Bowl.  The Packers haven't done much to help him out lately, and I probably would have gotten fed up too.  Seems to me that the Pack front office is acting a bit like the Cubs did about 10 years ago - operating under the "Well, as long as we have Brett and Lambeau Field, people will keep showing up and we'll keep making money."  Well now they lost one of those things because they didn't open up the wallet to try to put together a winner.
I respect the things Favre was able to do as a player (more TD passes than anyone else, the consecutive starts streak, etc), but to say that he enjoyed playing the game or was that much more passionate about football than anyone else is laughable at best.  The "gunslinger" persona that he got saddled with is a joke.  He had a great arm and made a lot of great throws in his career, but he made a lot of really dumb ones too, especially in the last 3-4 years.  I forget who it was on ESPN a couple years back, but somebody did a comparison between the throws/decisions Favre was making vs. the ones that Mike Vick was making.  Things were basically identical, but while Favre was hailed as the gunslinger that had a great passion for the game, Vick was called a bust that would never be able to be a traditional NFL quarterback.

Hmmm.... maybe character, rather than raw talent, has more to do with why someone is admired.  The grit Farve showed.  The 'playing like an 8-year-old in the backyard' attitude.

And it looks like somebody from ESPN was right about Vick being a bust, they just didn't realize, like you, that character is what makes the man - not talent.  Of all the comparisons you could draw, you pick this?  And for all the other comparisons you could draw you neglect to mention the large number of diamonds on Farve's hand.  Results matter.

(I'm waiting for posters to return now and slam Favre's character.  Smooth.)
