Mercer's upset of the Del Valley wrestler is big as well as I believe they were expected to contend for second with UW-LaCrosses and Auggie.

For those of you out there coaching football but making your living doing something else.  How did you get into coaching???  I'm assuming for most of you it is high school ball.  Did you contact schools???  Did coaching staffs come to you???  Did coaches at your college have contacts in the high school ranks and hook you up???  Just curious.

Sounds to me like someone is looking to fill out his resume...!! Doolittle, are you looking for a job, or what?  ;D

By the way, Go Bulldogs! I'd like to see them do well this March, even though I'm not a huge Drake fan overall..........

Never been more than a fan of the game...basically know nothing more than cheering.

I want to see Drake do well also.  Though it drives me crazy because suddenly my brother-in-law that lives in Des Moines is a huge Drake fan...he just follows teams that are winning and isn't a fan of anybody...drives me crazy.

Odds are wtih the snow ladden winter, there are a lot of Drake fans.  The last report I heard, is that the bookstore was selling out of Drake gear fast.

Lets hope they make a good showing and that Keno Davis is awarded national coach of the year.

I am not a Drake fan, but I am a state of Iowa fan, and press that we can get to prove that we are not corn fed hicks is good enough in my book.

I really had no intention of coaching when I graduated, but after 2 years out of the game, I was contacted by a coach from a rival school in HS who is now coaching down here in the DM area. I had helped out at some OL camps over the summer with my old HS coach so I wasn't totally away from the game.
Anyway, the Dowling coach contacted me to come down and talk to him. At my interview, he told me he had already talked to my old HS coach, some of the Wartburg coaches, and the coach at Union (now at Waverly) who I had played HS ball with. He said after talking to them the job was mine. It is a huge time commitment for next-to-no money, but it is very addicting. Fortunately, being self-employed I can make it work, other guys have had to give it up because of the hours and making it work with their bosses.
Oh, and to get licensed by the state, you need 75 hours of coursework that costs a couple hundred bucks.
15 hours physiology
15 hours ethics
15 hours sports psychology
and 30 hours athletic training.
If you are interested in getting involved, I've managed to pick up some connections nearly everywhere. The best way to get started is to get involved with the youth program in your town. You can never have enough volunteers there.

I'm proud to report I've been riding the Bulldog Bandwagon since last season.  A good friend of mine from my time at Wartburg is a Graduate Manager for the Bulldogs these days, which has led me to root for them of late.

I have to say, I've watched more Drake games this season than Hawkeye games. Mediacom is still withholding the Big Ten Network from what used to be loyal fans, but they will still show almost every Drake game on the Connections channel -- it makes the choice of who to follow pretty easy.

I got an internship at a D3 school right out of college b/c my position coach in college took a job at that school and contacted me.  When I got back to Iowa I had a friend who I played with that was the D coordinator at the school and he heard I was back in the area and called me.  So I guess I got pretty good breaks both times.

I am finding out that coaching is very much who you know and what contacts you have.

That is true as a HC is only s good as his assistants. Bad assistants will get you fired quickly
