In other news. I talked to my contact at IPTV a couple days ago. They are looking for something to fill the void of Wrestling since the Big 11 network took most of it. Money isn't nearly as big of issue as I expected it to be. Sounds like getting the presidents to approve it would be the biggest hurdle.
He seemed to think that IIAC volleyball would be the next step, but I'm going to get some more details and see what needs to be done to get the ball rolling.

Walston,
Well done. Being somewhat involved with preparations for the IPTV coverage of IIAC conf. wrestling @ Wartburg the biggest need was a fiberoptic line from the gym to the college ICN equipment room for a direct feed from production area to IPTV in Johnston.

Congrats to Tim, DF2004. What exciting news! :)

Now how is it going to work if Central and Redlands match up in the playoffs? It could easily happen....  ;D

Well I would hate to think that I would have to cheer against him.  I hope that I will not have to make that choice in the next two years.  You are correct though that it could happen.

You sound pretty convinced that he will return to the land of cornfields and icy roads after spending a couple of years in SoCal....

Well there are other ties besides his parents to the midwest.  He thinks a lot of his nephews as well.

That would work for the Wartburg home games but what about away games or other IIAC schools?  If it is going to be an IIAC thing there would have to be some arrangements made for other schools.

If they were to be done live, yes that would need to be done. However for a tape-delayed broadcast, don't need that.

Only if we're talking about doing the games live, like they did for the wrestling tourney.  If these games are destined for tape delay, then I don't think that would be as much of an issue.

What would it cost for an enterprise like this?  Do you have a guess SK?  Could you rent the equipment?  Getting students to do the work for credit would cut down on costs.  Labor is always the largest expense.

Labor would definitely be the biggest cost.  I don't think equipment would be that big a deal, especially if IPTV or Krogman & Associates (the group behind the Iowa High School Sports Network) is involved.  They would both have equipment and a broadcast crew that could be called upon.  Even the crew wouldn't have to be as large if they were willing to do some quick training with students that wanted to help out.

When we did games at Wartburg, we'd usually have a crew of 15-20 people involved (not counting announcers).  You'd probably want them around to set up around 10 AM for a 1 PM kickoff.  Figure on a quick lunch break around noon (probably have pizza brought in or something).  Get everyone in place for a quick (5 minutes maybe) pregame show, and then its gametime.  Game will last about 3 hours, and you'd probably figure on 1-2 hours for tear down.  All together, that's pretty close to an 8 hour day.  Even at minimum wage (maybe not for the students), that's 60 bucks per person, or anywhere from $1500-$2000 just to pay the crew.  That's not counting the gas to transport the equipment.  Nothing impossible, but the cost might scare some people away.

I think if this would be a reality, the conference would have to incur some of the cost.  There's nothing saying there would have to be a game broadcast each week, but if you figure 12 broadcasts, you're looking at $24k in labor costs, which is only about $2600 per school.  You could even drop that and let IPTV sell "sponsorships" to cover the rest of it.

Same difference.  Just as long as it isn't an advertisement.  They can still classify things as "sponsorships" though.  As in "This Iowa Conference Game of the Week is sponsored by Kum & Go" or whatever.

Well the IIAC schools could recoup some of those costs if they shifted some of the advertising budget because of the commercial spots on the broadcasts.  So in a way if the IIAC would commit to some commercial advertising they would be underwriting it in a way.  Then there are other's that might advertise on the game if the rates were not prohibitive.

All it takes is one rich hot tub salesman to pony up the $$$$ and the deal is done.

Plus all the IIAC schools that have their own TV commercials (probably most of them...I know Simpson, Wartburg, and Loras do for sure) could air those too.  And we could even produce some sportsmanship ads like the ones they run during Big Ten games.  All the coaches coming on and talking about how important sportsmanship is.  Guess its a good thing Raeburn won't be in the league any more. :o ;D
