If UD is going to be considered a list, then the 2004 BV squad deserves that same look.  Very similar equation.  Made the rest of the IIAC take them seriously, had the conference title in their sights, pissed away to many good chances to take the next step.
Neither of those teams makes the list. 6-4 is not even close to a top team in the conference over the past 10 years. Had BV's losses come earlier in the year to the same teams, we never hear about them at all.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

I was new to the IIAC starting in 2003 so will have to start there.

    1) 2003 Evil Empire. The fastest  "d" I ever saw.

    2) 2007 Central.  I don't believe they had the most talent but they sure could find away to win

    3) 2004 BV.     Have to agree with Klop they made everyone take notice. but did piss away the  conference title

    4) 2007 UD.   Scare everyone in the Conference. But went back to their old ways when they got behind.

    5) 2004 Evil Empire.  Don't believe to many people thought they would be very good after 2003 but made it to the playoffs

UD was down to Simpson 20-7 at the half...came back to win 35-20
UD was losing 21-14 to Coe with 1 minute left...blocked a punt, tied the game with a 4th down TD pass, won in OT.
UD was down 17-7 to Luther in the 1st quarter...came back to win 34-31!!!

I'd agree with this statement.  The other difference between those two teams was that Dubuque was never the conference's front-runner, while BV basically had the conference title locked up with a month left to play and folded like a cheap card table.

I would have to agree with you on this SK.  I was shocked at the BV game on how they played.  Being the first year of cheering for Central and watching the conference race shape up.  I was surprised at how they played the last game against us.

BV was mentioned because DF1 mentioned UD in the top teams.

Not to pile on that 04 BV team, but they were definitely catching the IIAC during a low year, where the 07 Dubuque team kind of picked the wrong time to have a great year.  Last fall, Central, Wartburg, Coe and UD were all legit championship contenders and teams that could have won at least a game in the postseason.
Back in 04 it was a completely different story.  Central was in the first year of the McMartin era.  Wartburg (while still very good) was dealing with all the losses from the 03 team, and Coe was in a bit of a lull between the Fred Jackson teams and the TeKippe/Suckow squads.  I'd argue that any of last season's top four teams would have dominated the league in 04.

DF1 got me thinking.  How about this for a category.  The top ten surprise teams from the past ten years.  You define the position and why they are a suprise.

DF04:

Actually the #1 surprise team is no longer in the IIAC.  That is Upper Iowa and you can pick any season you want.

"Oh, you're out of bounds, surprise! I'm going to take a cheap shot!"  >:(

The #2 surprise team is also no longer in the IIAC.  That is William Penn and again you can pick the year as long as we're talking Penn home games.

"Surprise! There is a football field under that rock pile."  ???

My choice for #3 surprise team is Luther.  The choices in Decorah in the fall are football or co-ed naked soccer.

Congratulations to any Drake Bulldogs fans, as they are the number 5 seed in the west region.

If you're going back ten years, the '97 Simpson team has to be mentioned. That team broke many school and conference records, had too many All-Americans to list, and played in the national semi-final game.

I guess it has been 11 seasons, so maybe they don't qualify.
