Rick Willis deserves every opportunity to coach again, but is a huge asset to Wartburg.

How can you look to these players to be leaders on the field, when they can not even lead a sane life off the football field.

KNSI Scoop: Underwood named new SCSU head football coach

Terry Lee Reporting

ST. CLOUD (KNSI) - St. Cloud State University has named their new head football coach and KNSI news has learned that will be defensive coordinator Scott Underwood.

An official announcement is expected this afternoon during a news conference at 4:15.

KNSI Sports Director Don Lyons learned earlier today that Underwood had been chosen.

Underwood has been the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator with the Huskies since 2001.

Former Coach Randy Hedberg was reassigned after the 2007 season and then decided to leave and take a Head Coaching job at Southern Illinois University.

Other finalists were Rick Willis, current director of athletics at Wartburg College in Iowa and Bemidji State football coach Jeff Tesch.

Not that I don't believe Walston Hoover and SK...but it was a "scoop" on a local radio station, however the St. Cloud website officially announced it.

Good to see Willis is still at Wartburg, but it looks like he is wanting to coach again...at least that is how he made it sound in the interview process.  I'm sure all of the IIAC would like to see him go outside the conference since they don't want to compete against him.

I feel sorry for Coach Willis for not getting the job, He does need to coach again, but I'm glad he still at the Evil Empire for at least now.

Their gain is not our loss.  Sounds like a win for Wartburg fans.

The question has to be asked.  Why he didn't get the job?  With a successful record as a head coach why did he not get the nod over some one that has not been a head coach?  It could be a bunch of different reasons.  Money may be one.  Maybe he withdrew after the money was discussed.  What are other peoples thoughts?  I just find it odd that a guy with his resume did not get the job.

My guess is that it was too late in the process to make a coaching change.  St Cloud's spring practice is supposed to start on Friday.  It would be very difficult to bring in a new coach, get a staff hired, and institute a system in that short of a time.  I have no doubt in my mind that if this would have taken place in December or January the job would have been Coach Willis'.

I think it was like when Willis stepped down as head Coach at Wartburg everyone knew that Coach K was going to get the job. K knew the players and what had to be done to stay successful and loyality from Wartburg to one of their Coach's. Look at Coe they stay in house. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying they,  didn't get the jobs because they aren't good coach's. I guess what I'm trying to said is the school knows an in house guy and that guy knows what the school expects. My question is did current players sit in on the interviews. I know my point of view doesn't happen all the time ie Simpson.

From the D2 message board they thought this was the AD's plan all along to bring in the DC.  The former coach wasn't fired, but reassigned to a different job after the season.  He then left for another school.  But in the meantime it's been about 150 days since that happened and they just got around to interviewing coaches 2 weeks ago.  The impression I got from reading those boards is they think it would be better to not get the job because then you would have to deal with their AD and it wouldn't be worth it.

There were legal issues that made this a +100 day ordeal that stemmed from the coach being "reassigned". St. Cloud had to wait until those issues were shored up before they went ahead with hiring another coach.

Coe didn't stay in house on purpose, they are just cheap

And that right there is why it's better to get info from Walston than some stupid D2 message board!!!
